About ten years ago I helped digitize the 19th century inquest records for the state of Victoria, Australia. A shocking number of Chinese former gold miners died in Ararat (Aradale) Lunatic Asylum, which made me wonder how much racism and language barriers played a part in their institutionalization and deaths. Also, the most common cause of death there among all patients was syphilis.
As much as I love this content, the ghost story of King Henry III seeing Thomas Becket in the Tower seems a bit lost, Becket was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral, a significant distance from London. The Tower of London doesn't have a cathedral, it never has! @@jamescarter3196 there really is no ghost in Poveglia. Just a lot of rundown buildings. A lot of people visit the island when they shouldn't. You can moor your boat at the dock where supplies for the psychiatric hospital used to arrive. The dock leads to the tunnel from which stuff was brought in and out of the asylum. Going there today, you'll find lots of shell casings, as many Venetians who own guns find it more convenient to use that tunnel as an impromptu shooting range than to drive to some place inland: it's close, it's deserted, and nobody from the city will hear a thing. This was very good. Do another some time. Maybe each Halloween season? I headed security for the live Ghost Adventures episode on Halloween night at the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. Won't get into paranormal details...but I WILL say I wish the owner had informed us that they release a FREAKING GREAT DANE every night to keep animals out. We found out 2 days before the show when the thing started running down the halls barking at about 2am. You can imagine being about 15-20 feet from the building and hearing that echoing down the halls getting closer! Freaked me and my guards out!

I would love to be able to visit more places like this. They're fascinating to me; if I were more inclined to fantasy, I'd call it a unique "energy" that captures your attention. There's absolutely no ghosts there, but you don't have to have something supernatural to make a place unique. I train and handle search and rescue K9s that specialize in human remains detection and recovery, and it reminds me of that way my dog's body language changes when we're in an area of death that shouldn't traditionally still be detectable by smell (so, all decomposition finished decades ago). But we both can sense that it feels different. I know he can somehow smell the difference in the soil and the plants from how the broken down nutrients from decomp has changed their growth at some level, but humans have no such excuse yet.
"There's absolutely no ghosts there"-- oh, so what are ghosts, and how are you certain that there aren't any anywhere? There's nothing smart about making up sweeping, grandiose nonsense to counter things you don't know anything about. There's a lot of evidence collected by actual scientists, but it's easier for the 'it's fake' crowd to just blurt out their unscientific mindless slogan over and over, just like everybody else who never does any research.
Even if you're not aware of a stimuli, it can still effect your physiology Such an effect is seen in things like infrasound causing paranoia in some people, or to an extent carbon monoxide causing confusion/cognitive impairment. Even though you can't hear the sound or smell the chemical consciously, your body has a reaction that tells you something is wrong. Simarly, even if there isn't a high enough concentration of the chemicals we know to be the products of putrefaction to be consciously detectable, they can still be activating some of the cells of your sensory nervous system, and causing a reaction you can't directly correlate
@@left4twenty Yes, that's what I was suggesting. But unlike other known causes of discomfort that can imitate a haunted feeling or cause hallucinations, we haven't found a way to calculate levels of elements in the air that can be measured, assessed and reliably associated with an area that was historically steeped with human remains or the pungent, highly nutrient-rich purge fluid that comes with death. I'm sure we'll find a way to measure it at some point, but we're not there yet, so it still feels a little like magic.
I dont want to debunk you or anything but might it be possible that you reacted to the dogs change in behavior and interpreted it as feeling different? Your comment is really intriguing.

Stately homes in Britain dating from the 18th century often have a ha-ha. Also called a "sunk fence", Its design means it's almost invisible from the house. It separates the formal gardens and lawns from the surrounding farmland, and its function is to stop livestock getting into the garden, not to stop people leaving the house.
The alleged skeletons of the lost princes were found under a staircase. It’s accepted that they met an untimely death, but it has a lot of unknowns. How did they die? Who killed them? Was King Richard III involved in their deaths?

Related to the Catacombs of Paris, in the early 20th century the City of San Francisco moved all of the remains interned in it's cemeteries to a very small town just south of the city. Since San Francisco lies at the end of a peninsula there is no way for it to expand in area. The former cemeteries were then built on: houses, businesses, and even the University of San Francisco.
i love the disconnect between "haunted" places. the logic behind WHY places get haunted. THEN all the places that SHOULD be haunted by those rules, that arent.. people who can live in a world where that makes sense, need mental help..
Does "more haunted" mean more individual ghosts, more spooky things, or more witnesses to the spooky things? Where do you haunt? The place you died? The place you were laid to rest? The place where you did something terrible? The place where something terrible happened to you? Somewhere you lived? Somewhere related to another person?
Had this conversation with my husband the other day. What makes a place "more" haunted than elsewhere? More number of ghosts? Frequency of ghostly activity? I need to understand this.
I've been inside the catacombs, and strangely, didn't really feel anything, except some sadness for the short, miserable lives many of these people. That was back in the 80s, when I was young and felt relatively immortal. But, Ive only ever known one person who actually believes in ghosts, which I don't, so I never bring up the subject.
I love science, but I also believe that ghosts or spirits can be real. I love topics like these although I could do a little without some of the snark...nevertheless, thank you for the video.
so you love science you just dont understand or respect it... gotcha.. you cant believe science AND believe bullshit at the same time.. ONE of those statements is a lie
This is going to sound kind of dumb... How do the bones in the catacombs know what time it is? It's underground like 3 p.m. looks the same as 12:00 midnight down there.
some people can tell by the atmospheric pressure or waves going through the earth? a feeling .so supernatural? Thats what i said. then thought of that.
Been to 2/3 and felt absolutely no ghostly vibes at either of them. And I fully believe in that shit. Most haunted place I’ve been is a private house I worked at for over ten years. Constant ghost issues there.
in 2016 i found myself homeless in paris and after a month of sleeping in the streets and metro i found a few gypsies who kinda took me under their wings and showed me around to some good spots around town to seek shelter, water etc etc. they took me down the catacombs and i must say, some of you facts are completely wrong. the catacombs in some places might be around 20 meters below the surface but most of them is waaay deeper. yes, many of the tunnels were built to house the bones of around six million people but before that there were already many tunnels older than that, and deeper. on my walks around/below town i stumbled across carvings dated from the middle to the end of the 1600s, real medieval stuff. even found a white flag with a red cross on it pushed deep into a wall in an oval room, cool thing is this room is located under the river seine in the same area as the famous notre dame cathedral. the flag became a souvenir and is now vacuum packed in an addic, still thinking of taking it to some historian or someone that might be able to give me a date to how old it might be but if its the real deal from the templar knights id have to return it to france, it looks old as hell and seems legit to me but on the other hand i also looked old as hell after just a few weeks down there. i lived in the catacombs of paris for about 6 moths, it was the toughest, scariest, gnarliest but most exciting and fun times of my life so far for sure.
"found myself homeless in paris" after that failure as a human im expected to give creedance to your observations of the catacombs? with "gypsies"? might as well tell me you lived with space aliens and met jesus

The alleged skeletons of the lost princes were found under a staircase. It’s accepted that they met an untimely death, but it has a lot of unknowns. How did they die? Who killed them? Was King Richard III involved in their deaths?
that last one looks like the setting for shutter island, even the way the secret stuff happens in the tower, i wonder if it was inspired by it or something?

01:50 A horrific tragedy a few years ago occurred here where a foolish tourist got lost down there when he trespassed beyond the safety quotas
He was never found until weeks later, and he was dead! - most likely dehydration
Thomas Becket was the Archbishop of Canterbury Cathedral and was killed there, not in the towers cathedral. 6:30
I'm a skeptic, still would not be keen to go to any of these places 😱
id go in a heartbeat
ive been to places where masses of my fellow humans ACTIVLY try to kill me
a bunch of stuff just trying to "haunt" me wouldnt even make me look up from the phone game im playing
Clearly we need to send Danny to investigate and repot on these places
The princes’ bodies were found inside the construction of the Tower Steps.
2:34 love how they usually operates at night after midnight seems like they have their own 9-5 jobs just like us
The catacombs is an amazing place to visit.
A found tape! Sounds absolut legit!
Sweet, a new list of future airBNB's to visit. 😂
I don't believe in ghosts, the afterlife or any of that tosh, but this video was genuinely interesting and an insight in the human psyche.
i love the disconnect between "haunted" places. the logic behind WHY places get haunted. THEN all the places that SHOULD be haunted by those rules, that arent..
people who can live in a world where that makes sense, need mental help..
@@ripvanwinkle2002 Indeed. Certain stretches of main roads would be knee-deep in ghosts. But no one gives such places any thought.
I've been to the Tower and didn't see any ghosts. The other locations are definitely not going on my bucket list.
Dang 5 hrs posted and already 29k views. Nice!
Just wondering, Simon do you Coomb or a comb your beard?
😂
This must have been the hardest script that Simon has ever read.
Does "more haunted" mean more individual ghosts, more spooky things, or more witnesses to the spooky things?
Where do you haunt? The place you died? The place you were laid to rest? The place where you did something terrible? The place where something terrible happened to you? Somewhere you lived? Somewhere related to another person?
you have discovered why the entire concept of "supernatural" is BS.
as none of your questions have quantifiable answers..
So, when are you starting your ghost hunting channel?
Ur sound editor sounds haunted. Levels man levels!
Ur is a Mesopotamian city, not a pronoun..
get educated
While I do not believe in Hauntings I do find the History of the Locations very interesting.
Spooky season baby
Really bummed Simon couldn't get a carbon monoxide Detector sponsorship for this one
I have a unexplained desire to visit all of these places
Me: Sideprojects did a video about ghosts?
Simon: Ghosts aren't real! Anyhow here's your video.
Me: Yeah that's about right.
Had this conversation with my husband the other day. What makes a place "more" haunted than elsewhere? More number of ghosts? Frequency of ghostly activity? I need to understand this.
My guess would be number of accounts🤷♀️
I dont know what is wrong with me but I laughted at Simon scared face.
I found it hard to believe that ghosts aren’t real. All it takes is one story to be true.
One day, there will be a haunted website where all of Simons videos roam.
Thanks for the silly topic, Simon! xD
This is going to sound kind of dumb... How do the bones in the catacombs know what time it is? It's underground like 3 p.m. looks the same as 12:00 midnight down there.
Yeah, that might work as a standup joke but not as a meaningful comment on what 'ghosts' might be or do or whatever.
some people can tell by the atmospheric pressure or waves going through the earth? a feeling .so supernatural? Thats what i said. then thought of that.
Whenever they make the RUclips Museum, Simons gonna need his own wing for all his stellar channels
This dude says “British Empire” like he’s yearning for it’s return.
Now I'm forever sad that ghosts aren't real, because that means I'll never see the ghost of a polar bear.
they are hard to spot all you se is a ghostly black nose and eyes
I thought for sure my bedroom would be in this video
Been to 2/3 and felt absolutely no ghostly vibes at either of them. And I fully believe in that shit. Most haunted place I’ve been is a private house I worked at for over ten years. Constant ghost issues there.
If ghost hunters were legit, they'd visit old factories.
I wouldn’t be afraid to be around a bunch of bones in the catacombs. I mean, Cindy, this is bones! Would you run from Calista Flockhart?!😂
I think my house is haunted because no woman seems to like coming here................
He’s just so sure. It cracks me up! 😂
in 2016 i found myself homeless in paris and after a month of sleeping in the streets and metro i found a few gypsies who kinda took me under their wings and showed me around to some good spots around town to seek shelter, water etc etc. they took me down the catacombs and i must say, some of you facts are completely wrong. the catacombs in some places might be around 20 meters below the surface but most of them is waaay deeper. yes, many of the tunnels were built to house the bones of around six million people but before that there were already many tunnels older than that, and deeper. on my walks around/below town i stumbled across carvings dated from the middle to the end of the 1600s, real medieval stuff. even found a white flag with a red cross on it pushed deep into a wall in an oval room, cool thing is this room is located under the river seine in the same area as the famous notre dame cathedral. the flag became a souvenir and is now vacuum packed in an addic, still thinking of taking it to some historian or someone that might be able to give me a date to how old it might be but if its the real deal from the templar knights id have to return it to france, it looks old as hell and seems legit to me but on the other hand i also looked old as hell after just a few weeks down there. i lived in the catacombs of paris for about 6 moths, it was the toughest, scariest, gnarliest but most exciting and fun times of my life so far for sure.
"found myself homeless in paris"
after that failure as a human im expected to give creedance to your observations of the catacombs? with "gypsies"?
might as well tell me you lived with space aliens and met jesus
DRINKING GAME!!
Take a shot evey time simon says "catacombs"
These places need the most thorough investigation. We need a case of hard liquor and a badass spearfishing amazon on the job now!
im down
i have a pellet gun that can shoot holy pellets and a super-soaker filled with holy water i stole from the local church!
I have an odd one for you, "Stigmata" cases. What is the actual causes for the symptoms?
bullshittery..
We used to visit the old abandoned mental ward 21 at morriset mental hospital all the time when I was a young fella that was bloody creepy at night
I would like to see the air quality of these areas
We don't have that info handy so go ahead and get back to us after you've researched it
