I was not offended in the least and truly welcomed the light hearted, a bit surprising, reminder for people to not be jerks when out in public. I have kids that work in the service industry and the general public's manners have plummeted. I would like to THANK you both for going out on a limb to make a memorable statement.

You hit the nail on the head of exactly why I did it Suzanne. I would’ve done better to rephrase the whole thing.

I went to the same Greg Judy beginners grazing school this year. I was able to answer specific questions to fill in the blanks. Greg was humble and mentioned others that were doing regenerative agriculture successfully. Ian Mitchell in south africa was a frequent reference. Teddy Gentry with the south poll cattle association also was mentioned.
As my wife and I were driving away from the lush knee high grass of Greg Judy's farms, we drove past many fields that were not rotationally grazed where black angus huge cows were standing in feed lots or in overgrazed fields that were barely ankle high. It was such a stark difference compared to Greg's fields.
The second thing that I noticed and appreciated was that greg had no heavy tractors. His main farm implement was a honda rubicon 4wd 4 wheeler. This is $10K to 12K new. I know he has a john deere utility tractor (which can run between 20 and 50 k based on age and condition), but that is not necessary for someone starting out. He buys in all of the hay he feeds in the winter. He hires out all of the heavy dozer work of clearing stumps and building ponds. He hires out the spreading of lime as necessary. The animals do most of the work. He doesn't need to spread fertilizer because the animals stay in the fields and get rotated even in winter. He doesn't need barns or winter sheds for ewes having lambs or cows having calves. He controls the breeding schedule so these are all born in the spring when the grass is thick. His time is spent building and moving temporary fences. As he gets more land, he can allow the herds to grow larger, but the labor to move the animals is essentially the same.
The weakness to his process is training and controlling sheep protection dogs. It seemed to be difficult to breed and train dogs for others. A combined flock and herd is another option that can avoid the need for dogs that Ian Mitchell seems to have perfected, but Greg seemed to think that lambs could get stepped on by the cows. (Lambs are extremely fragile and its important to give the ewes space to let the lambs bond and suck when they are first born.)
Another thing I noticed about Greg's farms...The land is extremely poor crop ground. It is hilly and wooded and is best suited to be pasture ground. I can see why the rent he pays is so cheep...because the alternative is that it is brambles or needs to be mowed at great expense every year. This is a good thing to look for when trying to rent out ground from others. If you are competing with grain farmers, then it will cost you.
Finally, I will mention that his cows and sheep are bred to maintain high quality genetics. The animals that are culled out of the herds are a source of cash flow for the farm and food. The cows are super calm and gentle because the mean ones get sold or butchered. If the cows don't breed back, they are sold or butchered. If the sheep need to be wormed, they get sold at the sale barn or butchered. Nature is enhanced with selective breeding and electric fence.
    It was quite an operation.

We haven't been commenting on many of your videos, but we have been watching! Yesterday I (Dana) binged on your videos while working in the kitchen. I told Michael that William had gotten married, which I only learned yesterday in my binge!! Congratulations!!! That's exciting!! In our house, when we say "Billy" or "William" in discussion, (i.e. Billy said.... or William said... or William got married!) everyone knows who we're talking about. With Michelle, it's a bit more tricky, because we know another Michelle. We really enjoy the content you put out. I appreciate your apology a lot. I appreciate your channel a lot, and all that your family does! May God continue to bless and direct you all!

Was not offended. But I understand about setting a higher bar for oneself.
Ben and Denise though. Great information. Spring has just dumped a whole bunch of new chores on the farm and yes, great advice on letting some things go. We can't do everything in one day, so we are learning not to beat ourselves up trying to do everything. It's really hard because all of the chores are important. But we know that we just can't do them all daily.

I’m not convinced that lampooning fools is something to apologize for. I often cite St. Paul and Elijah from the Bible as an example of righteous men mocking the foolish. And Creepy Joe is prolific in inviting scorn. I thought your joke was hilarious. Your channel is always high quality content.

ALRIGHTY! I'm all caught up! 🥳 Billy, your jokes have need in stitches, every time you crack one. It's sad to hear that some don't understand a true sense of humor.
Y'all, I'm so excited to be able to get out that way! Just like everyone else sees, Billy (and everyone he's had on as guests) is 100% on point with what the food shortages are doing around the country! I'm in Utah for the moment, but before the end of the year, we will be finding our forever homestead in the Appalachians, somewhere.
You all have given me so much information, and I'm so excited to be able to expand from just chickens, currently!
We rent, and our landlord doesn't allow us to have a garden, but we can have chickens... 🤦🏻‍♂️ It's been hard finding time between, working to be debt free and fixing our old vehicles up, to be able to make the cross country trip possible on a budget, to use any other lands to farm on in the city we're in. So, I'm living vicariously through all of everyone's channels, until we get out of here.
Keep on keeping on y'all! Hopefully we'll meet someday so I can soak up more of your knowledge one on one!

Do you have a place you can put large containers, either the “bag” ones or landscapers’ tree tubs? A patio or paved sidewalk where they won’t kill the grass?

    • @isleofviewhomestead
      @isleofviewhomestead 2 года назад +1

@@OkTxSheepLady we do have some potted plants around the yard, potatoes, aloe vera, spearmint and such things that we've been able to get to grow in "local" compost from the green fill. But other than that, we haven't tried anything large scale yet, especially on the walk ways. That's not a bad idea.

Hi from Ga. I was looking at the spoons and wondering if you could make some kind of dipper . Reason being I have a lot of rain buckets with comfrey or kale for plant tea and it would be so cool to have a dipper that I could hang on the totes (container gardening in totes) . I could use dipper to water the plants because it don't take but a. Up of tea.. Just an idea maybe?

You were having spontaneous fun with your spouse. It wasn’t disrespectful. What’s there to apologize about? If you feel it wasn’t appropriate than you don’t need to apologize to us. You need to apologize to your wife. But something tells me she wasn’t offended one bit. After all, you ARE her better then best friend, aren’t you? And why can’t you be a demonstration to the rest of us that fun with your spouse is also important? And I can hear Persimmon Phil trained his “cousins” proper: Jam the heck out of your videos with that sweet, sweet crowing 😂

I’m guessing your talking about the spelling be joke I found it rather amusing myself that’s the problem with the world we live in today is instead of laughing at a joke or even being able to determine what a joke is people choose to get offended over it. I live Jerry clower god rest his soul and he said numerous times that laughter is the greatest medicine on earth and I believe that because it can’t be healthy going around with a negative outlook on everything and looking for the next offensive word. My rant is over you are a bigger man for apologizing for saying a joke that was meant as that and nothing else.
