My personal theory is that Jean Jacket isn't a space faring alien. One it is too instinctual and animalistic to have the intelligence to operate a space craft, and 2 its body mass seems too fragile for the vacuum of space. It's either a creature from another dimension that accidentally clipped into our reality, or it's earthborn and the only reason it's never been spotted till now is because it hunts those that look at it and camoflages amonst the clouds.
Most of the stuff it does in the film ties in with real world lore. People have been seeing objects in the sky, and there are legends of people being sucked up by whirlwinds. Heck, even the unfolded version looks like a biblically accurate angel. So you can make the assumption that it's meant to be a very rare and undocumented animal.
@robertgronewold3326 There's actually a really creepy, true story, of a man who went missing in the 70's (I think) who was talking to flight control whilst he was out flying, and the black box records him reporting a ship flying above him and his last words are "oh God, it's not a ship" and then radio silence. They found pieces of the plane but he was never found. Sounds really, creepily similar to Jean Jacket.
Jean Jacket isn't the pilot, Jean Jacket is the entire thing. Like, technically a human is "piloted" by a brain, but that's not quite accurate. We don't have to push a stick to move forward, or hit a button to open our mouths. Jean Jacket is instinctually capable of flight and everything else it does throughout the movie. I'll have to rewatch the movie, but I think Jean Jacket had been around for a decent amount of time before the movie starts, but I don't think there's anything explicitly saying that Jean Jacket isn't from space. It's left ambiguous, so both interpretations are equally valid. It's not like we have a legitimate database on real aliens to pull from. We have no idea what they could be like, or what they could be capable of. Science is just how we currently understand things, but that has always been subject to change. We used to believe we were the center of the universe.

Oooh okay I finally get to be that person: EXPLANATION (SPOILERS ITS A GOOD MOVIE GO WATCH IT) So the movie is about two siblings OJ (the guy in the black cap) and Em (the girl). The movie begins with their father dying from raining debris (from the alien but we figure that out later). The two take over his horse ranch after he dies and begin to realize that there are aliens abducting their horses from the sky. They install cameras because they want to capture the aliens and be rich and famous. Angel (blonde guy) helps them set it up, he doesn’t believe their story until he figures out that a cloud hasn’t moved in months (hence the clip) after this they come to the conclusion based on its movements that it’s not an alien ship, it’s a giant living organism. some other stuff happens that’s not really important to the A plot (but if you interested i’d watch the movie). and it ends them hiring a guy to film the alien while they get it to chase OJ. the guy filming it dies and OJ and Em work together to blow up the alien. I left so much out but it’s such a good movie. EDIT: I should probably clarify. The alien is a living creature. the whole movie it eats horses and spits out their blood, clothes, and different bits of medals like keys and coins. It eats the filmmaker and a whole crowd of people at one point. That is why OJ and Em kill it.
Once upon a time, when I worked on a road crew, there was a family of dogs living just beyond a fence near us. They never knew we were there. Who is looking over the fence at us?
Because scp 312 is based upon actual legends of Sky Jellyfish, which Jordan Peel incorporated into the design of the creature along with many others like the biblical angel
OJ was autistic and that’s why he was the first to realize jean jacket was an animal, not a ship, and it’s also why he was the one who was able to interact with jean jacket without dying, and i’ll die on this hill. it’s indicated throughout the whole film that OJ is very invested in his horses and loves them a lot, and he cares deeply for them, which in return has gained him the trust of his horses. horses are his special interest. (and if you’ve ever known a “horse girl” in school, that was autism, and that’s kind of what i mean here) his interactions with *humans,* on the other hand, are always awkward and stilted and people don’t ever really seem to listen to him or take him seriously because he doesn’t really communicate well with other humans. (aside from his sister) OJ almost immediately recognizes the behavior of a stressed, fear-aggressive animal in jean jacket because he’s always been more in tune with nature than he has with people. and he winds up being right!
Interesting, it crossed my mind as well. I thought it was simply because I've been watching stuff about autism lately so my mind just naturally went back there. But the way you point it makes perfect sense, the lack of eye contact saving him, recognizing the patterns and being able to understand the creature... great movie, glad that clip peaked my curiosity enough to watch it.
It's actually a better camouflage than you think. Natural clouds, called "roll clouds," will frequently form when air near 100% humidity is forced upward back a hill or a mountain. They hover above the geological feature that caused them for much of the day until the temperature/ humidity combination that had them form shifts away from the sweet spot. Meanwhile, higher layers of cloud move along with the winds aloft in the usual way. Your idea makes for a nice yarn 😅 !
Having lived near mountains (Table Mountain, Cape Town in particular) I was thinking the same thing. It often has a cloud covering the top that appears to not move. It doesn't stay exactly the same for days, but it can look essentially the same day to day and even be there when there are no other clouds in the sky.
I haven't watched this movie but from this clip alone we understand that this frozen cloud wasn't tethered to anything like a mountain peak or a skyscraper. It was just there and its shape didn't even change. That's what made it distinguishable from natural phenomenon you just described.
Spoilers: OJ was dead on that it's not a spaceship. It's an alien in itself - a big predator that is hunting them. The local theme park(?) owner has been feeding it horses hoping to use it as a new attraction, so it associates this area with food.

Did they ever classified that entity as an “Alien” in the movie? For all we know that could be a creature born on earth went through evolution just like us and managed to hide from us till now
I’ve seen this movie countless times and this is still probably my favorite scene. The actual music used in it and the way the dialogue is conveyed gives this scene a lot of tension and suspense, but not in a bad way. It’s more of a mysterious, wondrous suspense. Yet another spectacle and masterpiece. Bravo, Jordan.
Love that Jean jackets origin was left up to interpretation, it could be alien sure, but it also could have been a terrestrial organism, I meant we saw that when the ballon popped inside of it, the pressure change killed it, and pressure is a big thing in space, plus like how is it able to perfectly camouflage itself with clouds on a random planet, seems like it might be native to Earth, but was and extremely rare species
This was a plot in the way old Spider Man cartoon... I forget which villain, but there was an episode where the bad guy was hiding in a blimp disguised as a cloud and Spider Man saw one cloud travelling against the wind and figured it out.

It's like a floating blob. Gobbling up people very fast but remains motionless on the air.
Plot twist. That’s the only normal cloud.
This movie was very great to watch
I fell asleep in the theater twice to this movie…
One of my most favorite films of all time!
One of my all time favourite movies. I just love this film.
Love the jean jacket alien, design goes crazy and the photo from the well was NUTS
Did they ever classified that entity as an “Alien” in the movie? For all we know that could be a creature born on earth went through evolution just like us and managed to hide from us till now
That cloud was wise on choosing that place to live had it been Mexico we would've taken it down in 15 minutes.
I thought that was a GREAT movie. One of the best of the genre I've seen.
It was a good movie. I chuckled a couple of times.
I feel there were side stories in this film that were maybe unnecessary. With that said some of those were fantastic.
Scary for sure.
What's is this called..
Still clouds are neat to watch
That dude never changes in all the movies just that same dead stare and lazy talking even in black panther
That was literally one of the best movies have ever seen🎉🎉
This was a plot in the way old Spider Man cartoon... I forget which villain, but there was an episode where the bad guy was hiding in a blimp disguised as a cloud and Spider Man saw one cloud travelling against the wind and figured it out.
Bruh JeanJacket was perfect in this
Nice premise!
