- Talkeetna Parks Hwy.
We left Denali National Park, drove out 8 miles on the Old Denali Highway, and camped on a beautiful lake for free. We have to tell you just how blessed we feel. We watched many videos from people who traveled to Alaska before we made this trip. A surprising number never got to see Denali. We saw that gorgeous mountain at almost every turn.
On the lake where we camped, it was so cool to see Sharon in her kayak with Denali in the background. That's a picture we can't get in Texas.
We were on our way to Anchorage, but we took a couple of nights at the lake to rest. We were pretty much on the go at Denali National Park, so we needed some down time. On the way to Anchorage we wanted to visit Talkeetna, Alaska. We will explain why.
The first place we stopped was at Kahitna Birchworks in Talkeetna, Alaska. It is the world's largest birch syrup facility. The harvest of the birch trees starts when the ground thaws. They do ship their syrups, but they don't ship their ice cream. Sharon said that the birch brittle is a good choice of ice cream. There is a hint of birch flavor, but it isn't overpowering. If you want to try some of these products, you can visit their website at Kahitna Birchworks.
Before Talkeetna became such a popular tourist population, the town was very small. They didn't have a mayor, so someone suggested a cat be the mayor. Ordinarily, you see the mayor around town; however, while we were there, the mayor needed to be seen by a vet, so she wasn't making public appearances.
If you are going to visit Talkeetna, put on your walking shoes. Once you park, you probably won't want to move your car until you leave. The town is filled with food, souvenirs, carvings from antlers, and other gift things.
Also, just north of Anchorage in Wasilla, Alaska, we stopped at an Iditarod Training Facility. Riley, the musher, offers "sled" rides with his team pulling the sled. The cost is $10, and we felt it was a bargain. The ride is very fast, but the dogs love to run. Closer to Iditarod time, Riley will choose his team. Currently, I think he said he has 30 dogs who are training and 8 pets who are retired. Eighteen dogs a day come with Riley to give rides and get exercise.
A side note is that Wasilla is probably most famous for Sarah Palin, John McCain's running mate in a presidential election some years back. Mrs. Palin was the former governor of Alaska.
What a fun time y’all had!
Thanks Ladies, we look forward to Thursday's when we get to see another episode of your Alaska journey.
Thank you so much for watching our Alaska series.
What a wonderful area, great things to do. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much!
Bless you ladies, thanks for sharing. And it looked like the weather was on your side for your travels.
It was sometimes quite cold, but other than that, it was great.
Thanks for Sharoning your adventures because I would never see w/o you!
Bert, we are so pleased to be able to share this with you.
i’ve been to Alaska. You are making want to go back, very badly!
@@lostthepart Spending 2 full months in Alaska gave us time to see and do a lot.
@@lostthepart Believe it or not it's making us think about going back,
I will go with ya!
Wasilla is now on my bucket list
We thoroughly enjoyed it.
Awesome video! I'm a former teacher, too, and we started a RUclips channel for the same reason you two did. What is your favorite part of the Great White North so far? I did a similar trip back in 2001. Now we mostly visit National Parks in the lower 48 and also Japan. We really like your channel, so we subscribed. Happy travels!
The Parks Highway is named for George Parks who was the territorial governor of Alaska from 1925 to 1933.
