I got in trouble at the Belvedere museum in Vienna for putting my hands on a glass cage. Looking back at it, it was a bit inconsiderate of me... but I didn't even think about it when I was doing it.
Have seen a couple of Nancy Langham-Hooper's videos, enjoyed them greatly and learned from them. She is knowledgeable, low-key, and well worth viewing. Over many many years of visiting museums - art and otherwise - have come to some of the conclusions she points out - and I learned a few things as well in this vid, such as about art museum etiquette - like getting too close. Oops - sorry! Also appreciated her observation about visiting briefly and often, and that "I have basically a two hour limit - if I get like some good cake in between those hours" (4:02-4:09). Since I live about an hour's drive to the Phoenix Art Museum, by the time I get there what I really want to do is have some tea or coffee in the Temporary Cafe and read for awhile. After that's out of my system, I just wander, usually to my favorite sections, and may visit for an hour - or less. At my age, I'm happy just being in the presence of my favorites for several minutes for each, and then walk around and see other things. Thanks Nancy for bringing the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation to our attention!

My signal to spend time with a piece is that I don't want to walk away. I try to tune in to that feeling. When I want to stay, I do.
Great tips. I was a “start at the front and go down the wall” museum visitor, and even after hearing you give this advice before, I often catch myself falling back into that habit. That’s when I remind myself to scan the room. Also love the tip to become a member. It is freeing to be able to just pop in.
Lovely tips, thank you! Membership is great, except when you're coming from abroad and only have limited time to see it. In such case, the last tip is priceless.

Fab tips. I definitely need more museum/art gallery visits in my life and will aim to fight my FOMO urges when I’m there. Little and often :-)
When I’ve been to popular/ busy places I’ve tried to stand in the crowd, plant my feet for a moment take a deep breath, and then see the crowd as part of the art. Why are they drawn here? What do they see? How do they see? I thought I would hate the crowd at the Mona Lisa and that I would be so disappointed by seeing it in real life but I loved it. The painting and its positioning just drew me in from the minute I stepped in the room. I went with the flow, looked from afar, watched the crowds reactions, and eventually got to stand right in front of it. Stunning.
That's a lovely way to see the crowd, as experiencing the art right along with you! I'm glad you still enjoyed the Mona Lisa- maybe I'm just grumpy because "back in my day" it wasn't nearly as crowded!
Very useful! I agree totally, it's better to see only one part and enjoy it rather than try and see everything (and remember nothing). I'd love to go to a museum with you.
