I’ve been crocheting for at least 30 years. When I need to keep track of a stitch or a stitch count, I put in a stitch marker or a piece of yarn to remind me that something is going to happen in that stitch. This makes crocheting so much more relaxing because I don’t have to constantly be worried about the stitch counting while I am crocheting. I can enjoy the process and know that I have a flag telling me something different is happening with the stitch marker. I recommend using stitch markers to anyone I teach to crochet. They can be your friend.
I found stitch markers very useful for this pattern. I placed a marker every 10th stitch and left them in place until I finished the full row, then moved them up to start the next set of short rows. Worked marvellously and also highlighted the "awkward" stitch.

Very good explanation for this pattern. I love Tunisian Crochet and I look forward to making this. I think it would be a great pattern for someone in a wheelchair. I have a sister I might make this for. Thank you!
Thank you Elizabeth! I tried to make it accessible to even a beginner to learn this pattern. And anyone who already knows Tunisian can always fast forward as they need to. I think your idea makes a LOT of sense. I hope you get to make one for your sister. How lovely that would be. Let me know if you do! xo Kris
Wow good idea. My question after such a long time : did you make one? How many stitches did you use in the starting row for a convenient length for such a person?
Just finished my short rows shawl and I must say it was a joy to see this piece develop! I love the uniqueness of the short rows technique and I especially love the way the technique developed the pretty and defined collar. I don't have a FB account, however I will post on Instagram soon. Very excited that I completed this awesome design! 😊
I had this same yarn in my stash, didn't know what to make with it. I just started this pattern, you made a wonderful video and very clear and thorough. However, I still have managed to aee where my short rows end as there are little spaces.

🥰 Your pattern sharing technique is perfect. I am so very appreciative of this shawl. Ideas are just swimming in my head. First I'll do a capelet then the experimentation will begin. I want to try other stitches and eventually do a full cape and I'd like to try a wrap around for the cold Montana winters.

@@LightandJoyDesigns I’m making the shawl now in a lovely mottled soft pink with grey flecks and decided to use charcoal grey for the full rows. It’s lovely. I’m not on FB so can’t share there. This pattern will be a regular go-to I can just tell.
Totally agre with you about the Denice interchangeable hooks they are very strong and won't break easy like some of the wooden varnished ones out their and their lockingsystemworks it never comes apart- this is a gorgeous shawl and I want to do this - thank you for sharing and teaching us
Thank you Wanda. Glad to see your testimonial for the Denise hooks. I hope anyone who is interested won't hesitate to buy at least the half -set. Hope to see your version of this shawl. What yarn do you think you would use?

Can you please add a link to the sewing needle that you used in this video? I like the fact that the eye part of the needle can be opened up to insert yarn. Thank you!
I love this tutorial and your channel! Tunisian was the first kind of crochet I learned, then regular crochet. You are a wonderful teacher, please continue as you have time. There are so many Tunisian youtubers out there but you are already one of my favorites. I am starting my shawl today and I’m excited! Thank you so much!

Just found your channel via Internet search. Looking forward to exploring your channel further in between making this shawl.

@@LightandJoyDesigns You are so welcome! I also went ahead and made a purchase of your pattern in case I don't have internet access. Yes, I do have all 3 accounts. It will take me several MONTHS to finish this beautiful cape since I have many health issues, one being carpel tunnel, neuropathy and arthritis in both my hands/arms and it takes me a very long time to complete my projects. I also have a lot of commitments July and August, this is why I am starting this now so I hope to have it completed by Nov. As soon as I finish the cape(s) I will take pictures and share on FB and Ravelry. I will be using Ferris Wheel which I have several colors of. Thank you again!
Take your time. I’ll be thrilled to see it when you finish. All in good time. It’s a fun one to watch develop. Ferris wheel is perfect for this project. Stay in touch!
Love the pattern just found it and can't wait to knit it. WIth regards to counting your rows there actually is no row 7 the way you made it because that full row is row one of the pattern repeat SO you have only 6 rows in each wedge. Thanks so much for sharing .....

I made the shawl and it was so easy, I enjoyed learning a new technique. I posted on Ravelry. I would like to make a rectangle shawl using same technique is that possible?
Awesome! Did you link it to my pattern on Ravelry? If so I want to check it out! The rectangle idea is cool. I bet you could do it. I would say plan it out on paper and then go for it! Please let me know how it goes. I’d love to see how yours turns out. You can share it in my FB group if you like facebook.com/groups/LETSHAVEFUNCROCHET
I have wide shoulders and am of substantial build and am new to Tunisian crochet so for me it would have been helpful for me to have you also explain how to adjust number of stitches needed for length and size differences. Otherwise great instructions regarding choice of yarn and I might give this a try - looks like fun technique to learn. Thxs
Hi Miryana, Thank you for that feedback. I would recommend measuring how far down your arm you would like the shawl to rest. So measure from the back of your neck to the desired place on your arm. This will be the length of your starting chain. Regarding the circumference, simply keep following the pattern until it goes around you the desired amount of coverage. Does this help? Hope to see your version on Insta or my FB group soon. You can use hashtag #RadiusShawl and @agentsully to tag me so I will see it. Here's my FB group to join where you can share photos: facebook.com/groups/LETSHAVEFUNCROCHET
Light and Joy Designs excellent feed back - thank you so much. When I finish my first time Mosaic project I have just been learning to do, I am going to try to learn this Tunisian crochet project for sure . I am on a crochet learning roll here - LOL !
I’ve just started my shawl, and am working along with you. I must say your very thorough explanation of the edge stitch and how to work it is the best I’ve seen! It makes sense now and explains why my edges look messy. Thank you for taking the time to go into such detail. Being a beginner to Tunisian Crochet, I found this video exceptionally helpful, and can’t wait to have a finished shawl. 😊
+Trish B. I’m so glad to hear that Trish!! That’s awesome!! Please definitely let me know where we can see a picture of yours when it’s finished!! Leave a link here or any of the other places I have listed in the written pattern (which is free) yay!!💗 Kris
@@LightandJoyDesigns I wish! I got a decent amount done. But now it's sitting on my WIP table, waiting for me to pick it up again. You'd think having to stay home I'd have more time to craft, but it's actually the opposite! I will get back to it and hopefully finish it by next Winter. Haha I must say though, it's a very easy pattern to follow and works up quickly when you can just sit and simple stitch. :D
Would this work the same if u wanted 2 make a skirt/shirt that can flair? Not really looking for a pleated thing but have a gradual flare that hangs nicely at the base.....
Yes it would work. You’ll just have to experiment to get the right amount of flair that you desire as well as having your waist line. Be the size that you want to do that you will need to have a rows that are not short rows.
Hi Kris, one of the best tutorials for edge stitch I’ve seen on RUclips. Is there a way to make the inside edge of this shawl bigger? I don’t like anything too high on the neck so would prefer a wider inside edge. Would doing an extra full row on each repeat do that do you think? Or would it be better to put more stitches on the short rows eg: in your sample of 60 stitches make the increments 15 instead of 10 so I would have more full rows in relation to the outer row. I can’t come up with a formula to work this out. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. 👏👏❤️❤️🇬🇧
Yes, I believe adding an extra full row will make the inside edge longer. Making the increments longer as you mention 15 versus 10 will make the outer edge shorter relative to the inside edge. So yes that will work too. You'll just end up doing more rows overall I believe. A great way to play with this is to actually draw it out like I show in the video. Draw a few different ideas and use as similar dimensions in your drawing as you can. This will help you see what you like best, before committing with yarn! Please please please let me know how this turns out for you!! Hi Jill I’m looking at making this for my aunt and like you she may not like the neck. Have you made with the adjustments you mentioned? If so, can you provide more details on how you did finally accomplish? TIA
@Vmason I haven’t worked it yet, I’m still trying to decide on the yarn I’m going to use. I am going to try both doing 2 full rows on each repeat & have more stitches on the short rows, as I already said I’m just looking for the perfect yarn for the project.
Wondering how this worked out for you?? You can share photos on my FB group if you like and also ask questions there: facebook.com/groups/LETSHAVEFUNCROCHET
Bonsoir je ne parle absolument pas votre langue et ne la comprend pas du tout non plus mais grâce à vos gros plans j'ai pu parfaitement comprendre ce châle et j'espère pouvoir le faire bientôt je vous en remercie beaucoup
I finished my shawl I love the way it turned out. Started a second one for a gift. Not to sure where I can post a picture of it. I need to wash and block it next. Thank you so much for such a great video!❤
Review this portion of the video 33:30 until 37:01 You will see that there is a space/hole where the short row ends that is a little larger than the other spaces. Depending on your tension/tightness of stitches and the size hook you are using this hole may seem larger or smaller. As long as you are striving for even tension and stitches that are "goldilocks" - that is- stitches that are "just right" (not too tight, not too loose) - then overall when you complete this item you will not notice these spaces/holes. It's like this for any crocheted item, there's always going to be some spaces/holes. These can be minimized by smaller hooks and tighter stitches, but crochet is naturally going to have some amount of spaces between stitches. But once the overall garment is completed, people will not be fixated on the holes/spaces, they become perfectly integrated with the overall look of the item.
You’ll need to test it out with some swatching to get the look you want. Just make a mini version and then when you have the look you want then use that as your gauge.
Since the top edge only has a few stitches, if you fold it in two you might get a short collar. You could double the amount of stitches at the neck (where you have the long rows) and make a turtleneck by folding that piece down.
I've watched the video a few times and read the pattern. I'm still confused with figuring how many chains you need. The pattern said to determine length and divide by two, chain that length and in a multiple that can be divided by your Short Row interval. TIA
Start: How wide do you want your overall shawl to be? This is the DIAMETER of the circle that this shawl will be. Divide this in half to get the RADIUS you desire. This will be in inches or cm. (Make a 6" x 6" swatch to get the gauge for your yarn and hook choice) Find out how many stitches you will need to get the RADIUS you want. Let's call this number N. Then determine the INTERVAL you want to use (5, 10, 15 stitches - any number you want) Then adjust number N so that your Interval number will divide into that evenly. So let's say you want your circle or half circle shawl to be 40" in DIAMETER. That means the RADIUS will be 20 inches. This will also be the HEIGHT of your shawl. This is your starting measurement. Next let's say that when I make my SWATCH I determine that it takes 63 stitches to make 20 inches. 63 is my number N. Let's say that I am choosing 10 stitches as my INTERVAL. So now I need to adjust my number N (63) to be able to be evenly divisable by 10. That means I need to either round up to 70 or round down to 60. Let's say I decide that I'd rather round down so that the shawl is not bigger than the 20" radius. So I choose to round down to 60. So you'll begin by chaining 60. Let me know if that helps. Kris
@@LightandJoyDesigns Thank you for the detailed explanation. I went with 120 chains and it turned out good. It was for my aunt’s 85th birthday and she loved it. Thanks again

I want to try other stitches and eventually do a full cape and I'd like to try a wrap around for the cold Montana winters.
So Awesome Denise! Have you finished the first one yet? I'd love to see pictures! Kris

@@LightandJoyDesigns I’m making the shawl now in a lovely mottled soft pink with grey flecks and decided to use charcoal grey for the full rows. It’s lovely. I’m not on FB so can’t share there. This pattern will be a regular go-to I can just tell.
@@StitchingWithLove That is so awesome to hear that it will be a go-to pattern for you! Are you on Ravelry?
grazie grazie hai spiegato meravigliosamente bene
Thank you!!
This maybe a old shawl video but I just found you the year is 2022 I have bought pattern and subscribed
I think this shawl is stunning
Thank you so much, Colleen! I am so honored to have you as a subscriber and a customer! Please share with me pictures of your version. I would love to see it.
Can you please add a link to the sewing needle that you used in this video? I like the fact that the eye part of the needle can be opened up to insert yarn. Thank you!

Excellent tutorial, thx for the extra info I was missing in doing Tunisian crochet!
My pleasure JoAnne. Let me know how yours turns out!
+Quilterbee Tarpley Wow! Such kind words!! Thank you so much. I hope to bring you and everyone many more videos! More Tunisian cool stuff coming up soon! Xo 💗
Just found your channel via Internet search. Have liked and subscribed and looking forward to attempting to make this beautiful shawl to give as a gift for one of my daughter's co-workers since she is ALWAYS cold in the office they work in. Thank you so much for all the details and clear directions I've seen so far, as well as, making the pattern and tutorial!! Looking forward to exploring your channel further in between making this shawl.
Dear Rio, You just made my day!! Thank you so much!! So glad that you are getting good value out of my tutorial and patterns. Hope to see how yours turns out. Are you on FB or Insta or Ravelry? Would love to see a picture when you’re done. All my “places” to find me are in the youtube description. Thx again for reaching out!!
@@LightandJoyDesigns Will do!! Have a great week-end..
Love the pattern just found it and can't wait to knit it. WIth regards to counting your rows there actually is no row 7 the way you made it because that full row is row one of the pattern repeat SO you have only 6 rows in each wedge. Thanks so much for sharing .....

Great tutorial. So if you wanted more "flare", Don you suggest the intervals be fewer number of stitches (shorter)??
Yes, exactly! Are you planning to make one? Once you do, you'll want to make a second one with a different variation!
You can share it in my FB group if you like

Light and Joy Designs excellent feed back - thank you so much. When I finish my first time Mosaic project I have just been learning to do, I am going to try to learn this Tunisian crochet project for sure . I am on a crochet learning roll here - LOL !

Thank you so much for the wonderful video!!
Thank YOU Jakendra for the thanks. Let me know if you post your pictures somewhere online. Would love to see your version. 👍😊
+Trish B. How’s it coming along? Any pics to share?
@@LightandJoyDesigns I wish! I got a decent amount done. But now it's sitting on my WIP table, waiting for me to pick it up again. You'd think having to stay home I'd have more time to craft, but it's actually the opposite! I will get back to it and hopefully finish it by next Winter. Haha
I must say though, it's a very easy pattern to follow and works up quickly when you can just sit and simple stitch. :D
All in good time. :-) I allow myself to set WIP's aside and then before I know it I find myself wanting to get back to it.
How did it turn out!?😀
This is so beautiful!!
Thank you Miranda! Do you think you might try it?
Would this work the same if u wanted 2 make a skirt/shirt that can flair?
Not really looking for a pleated thing but have a gradual flare that hangs nicely at the base.....
Yes it would work. You’ll just have to experiment to get the right amount of flair that you desire as well as having your waist line. Be the size that you want to do that you will need to have a rows that are not short rows.
Thank you for sharing
My pleasure. Thanks for the thanks! 😊💗👍🙏

Hi Jill
I’m looking at making this for my aunt and like you she may not like the neck.
@@ABJILL033 ok, I’m going to try and start. I need to do a full row after each short row and look at stitches in my short row as well, is that right?
Wondering how this worked out for you?? You can share photos on my FB group if you like and also ask questions there: facebook.com/groups/LETSHAVEFUNCROCHET
Bonsoir je ne parle absolument pas votre langue et ne la comprend pas du tout non plus mais grâce à vos gros plans j'ai pu parfaitement comprendre ce châle et j'espère pouvoir le faire bientôt je vous en remercie beaucoup
Yay! So glad to hear that! 😊😊😊
I finished my shawl I love the way it turned out. Started a second one for a gift. Not to sure where I can post a picture of it. I need to wash and block it next. Thank you so much for such a great video!❤
Great job Pattie! Here's where you can post your pictures
facebook.com/groups/LETSHAVEFUNCROCHET
I'm not sure what I am doing wrong, but I have space where I end each short row. I don't think my stitches are too tight, but maybe?
Review this portion of the video 33:30
until 37:01
You will see that there is a space/hole where the short row ends that is a little larger than the other spaces.
Can I make this shawl using the lace stitch with size 1 or 2 thread? If yes, what Guage would you recommend for the needle?
You’ll need to test it out with some swatching to get the look you want. Just make a mini version and then when you have the look you want then use that as your gauge.
Hola, que pena que no tengan subtítulos en español , sus modelos son muy bonitos ! Gracias
Gracias sorry about that. You can probably get the idea from watching even without knowing English.
I have a question does the top of the shawl turn into a collar or a turtleneck
Since the top edge only has a few stitches, if you fold it in two you might get a short collar. You could double the amount of stitches at the neck (where you have the long rows) and make a turtleneck by folding that piece down.
What YarnAndy has said here is correct. Thank you yarn Andy.
(Make a 6" x 6" swatch to get the gauge for your yarn and hook choice)
Find out how many stitches you will need to get the RADIUS you want. Let's call this number N.
Then determine the INTERVAL you want to use (5, 10, 15 stitches - any number you want)
Then adjust number N so that your Interval number will divide into that evenly.
