Loved this! Wild Seed is one of my favorite books. Anyanwu's passivity was absolutely so frustrating, but the thing is that Doro is untouchable. She could attack his body but that would just result in his spirit unwillingly taking over her own. She'd just be dead and he'd carry on. I also find Anyanwu's "abomination" really interesting! Even though she can take the form of any animal and admits that her people's religion is not really true to how the world works, admitting that she 'helps herself' and may not believe in God, she still sticks steadfast to her traditions and customs. She strongly maintains an anthropocentric mindset. This contrasts Doro who has completely disregarded all cultural norms and shames, even though he can only manifest as a human.
28:00 I think the key to understanding Doro is to remember that he has no choice in his immortality. His spirit will take over someone else's body if his current host dies, he can't stop doing that. So after about 500 years or so of suffering through that, you can imagine the apathy that would take over. Also he does mention to Anyanwu that more powerful bodies were more pleasurable to take over, so he started to breed them for that reason and also in the hope that he could breed someone who would be able to keep him company longer than one human lifetime
The way he put Anyanwu in his struggle was heartbreaking. I understood his lack of empathy. I was foolish too many times to think that he cared for someone without reciprocations
Anywanwu’s passiveness came off as patience and maturity to me, given her 300 years of age. Could be forgetting a bit since I finished Wild Seed a few months ago, but I thought it was a sign of amazing self-control since if she did act, most of the time it would have ended in her or someone else getting killed. (spoiler) I think Mary’s…. part at the end of the second book was the perfect ending and that she was the perfect character for the task. Love this review!
Thanks for making this! One of the most interesting parts of this book for me was the parallels and contrasts between Anyanwu and Doro. Though Anyanwu is nurturing and Doro is manipulative, in the end they are doing a lot of the same things. And, yes, it was super frustrating when the only time that Anyanwu truly "stood up" to Doro was in the end when she was threatening suicide. I wish that she would not just give the win to Doro, even if it feels like he's unstoppable.
one note with the captions, if anything is like inaudible (like bc y’all were speaking at the same time) you can just put [inaudible] in your captions. I appreciate you adding the “E” for when Emmarae was speaking
I also found Doro's absolute power so frustrating - dude is effing scary. Fortunately Anyanwu's niece Mary is much less passive than Anyanwu in the next book...
@@LocDBooktician lucky you! I would say the first, second, and fourth are sci fi gold, some of the best ever. The third is more of a horror story lol which is less my thing.
Just finished this book last night and came right to my watch later to watch this! This was great to watch and dialogue through the screen with y’all 👏🏾😁
@@LocDBooktician It was a great read but the ending left me feeling somewhat unfulfilled for Anyanwu. Much like you I saw Doro as an abuser and a stalker and found it suffocating to read the book sometimes. It was beautifully and masterfully written though! I am encouraged and excited to continue reading THE Octavia Butler👏🏾👏🏾.
I'm so excited to get into Octavia E. Butler's work. I FINALLY found a copy of "Kindred" last week but I haven't started it yet. It'll be the first book I've read of Butler's and I'm really hoping I like it since I've heard such great things about her writing. I haven't read "Wild Seed" but I'm here watching this just out of curiosity to see if I wanna add it to my tbr or not. It definitely sounds pretty deep (as in complicated) so I'm not sure... but the longer I listen to the both of you, I'm becoming more and more intrigued by the story. Just not sure if I wanna commit to an entire series though... we'll see.
Chile...i just finished this, sheesh its a lot! Omg, thanks for the video, because I needed to reflect on this 1 for sure. So I had to rush thru because I was just so curious....in the end did they just decide to play nice...are they a couple? I will definitely be reading the next book. Also what order are u reading this series?
I haven’t read this book and didn’t have any plans to so I decided to go ahead and watch the video. I must say, WTF was a common thought through this Lol. I know I’m missing a lot of context but still....
@@LocDBooktician The spoilers didn't bother me; I was expecting them and you made it clear at the beginning that it was a spoiler discussion. I just couldn't decide after if I should read it to find out more or run far far away. It seems like the kind of book that would make me very frustrated and a bit angry throughout the whole thing. But you know...curiosity. LOL

That’s a great point. I understand doro’s ability was out of his control but I was so frustrated with him

I agree! Mary really did shine in book two. I didn’t expect that at all
D'oro embodies the man Anyenwu embodies the woman. I can go in depth

I couldn’t agree with you more. The more I got into the series I kept seeing more similarities than differences.
Anyanwu is definitely a frustrating character LOL!! & im soo ready for the Doro rants
lol SAMMEE there were so many times when I was like okayyyy cool cool we can use this against Doro, but then she just tells him anyway?!?

Just finished listening to it. So many wow moments in this book. Where does Octavia get this inspiration?
I wish I knew!
Hi! Looking forward to the review. Please consider adjusting and testing audio levels sounding rather low. Thanks!
