Great stuff! Good summary of the core basics behind the half guard underhook vs whizzer battle. Details and perfection of the underhook is key, otherwise you're getting choked
This is why I do not go for an underhook right away, when I come up on the elbow. I instead frame the opponent's hip with my forearm and turn my upper body towards the map while scooting my hip away from them. It's virtually impossible for my opponent to get me back on the mat from there. The usual reaction is pressure from them then, which I will use to shoot the underhook and the far leg scoop grip at the same time while throwing myself under my opponent while also loading them onto my hip. I can essentially go to coyote or whatever from here. The other scenario is them not pressuring me back, in which case I usually have an easy time wrestling up.
Nice, if I'm late on those options I like to give up my underhook and try to punch across to half octopus guard, but it's definitely not as good as prevention.
@@Reubenman it works a little better for the guilliotine because it's easier to free the top side arm but for the darce you would limp arm out , so thumb is going to rotate down then towards your hip to clear then punching it across and over hooking the far side leg while going belly down. You don't go traditional half octopus where your high in the arm pit.
probably not because the top player can just roll to their back to relieve the pressure. there is some potential for injuring their knee if you do it super aggressively and they don't respond to it well, but that is unlikely to occur as well.
One of the best instructors in the game, thanks for sharing all the great info.
You're an amazing teacher, Lachlan!
I just ran into this recently, so it's a timely video. : )
So glad you touched on correct head position, I feel like that’s often overlooked, thanks!
Excellent stuff. Thank you. Wish I had this about 4 years ago
Exactly what I need! I keep getting my head grabbed and me subbed by this new black belt to our gym
Great video. Thank you kind sir
Been struggling with this for so long
Awesome. Fighting his hands with your hands or with your bottom shoulder and jaw are vital too imo.
Great content! It’s really what i was looking for

Sure it's hard to put into writing. But I'm having trouble imagining how I would go from being darced to getting to octopus?
You mean it's not locked up yet?

Great content
What about going for the single leg/low underhook instead of getting the high underhook? Isn‘t this effective as well?
Thank you
Great video
Nice! Any way you could show how to defend when he guillotines you from your own butterfly guard?
To the point!
He is amazing 👏

Can the knee crank at 4:10 be used as a sub?
