World Sport meets Hang Glider and Red Bull Athlete Jonny Durand for his pro guide to hang-gliding. Relying solely on thermal currents to keep the hang glider airborne, Jonny's flights can either last for hours, or minutes but there's no one better at flying once he's up.

They were gliding but they had complete directional control. Meaning they could pick any reasonably safe place to land that was within glide.

Today's gliders look so advanced compared to the 1991 Wills Wing Sport AT I flew. No keel pocket or king post with ground wires! Obviously stiffer sail cloth throughout and short, tight trailing edges! Carbon fiber frames rather than the 'advanced' 7075 T6 aluminum I was so proud of. I'm happy for everyone able to avidly pilot such equipment today. I've been told these designs are even easier to land! I now own and fly a 2-seat Light Sport airplane but nothing I've done in 57 years has been as exciting and fulfilling as hang-gliding.

Wow, that's just so cool that he's hang-gliding like that!! I want to hang glide someday but it's a little scary for me. However, I will take it over skydiving because with skydiving you start at the height of an airplane, and you fall down to the ground and hope to heaven you survive. Whereas with hang gliding, you start at the ground and then you can soar up into the sky. You also don't have to go that high but you can go an altitude that you feel comfortable with where it's the same height as say a house, church, school, or other building that isn't as high as say a huge mountain but they're still high enough to where you can reach ground level and you can still land if you want to (which is where I prefer to be at when I hang glide). I have also seen hang gliders where your legs are sticking out and you can go higher (and like I said I won't go too high because I may fall to my death), and I'm surprised this guy had a net on his legs where he couldn't freely move his legs around. I want to hang glide not just for fun but also to get to and from work, school, the grocery store, and church every day just so I don't have to deal with traffic but my parents have told me that's not realistic so maybe whenever I hang glide, I'll do it like only once or twice just to say that I have done it already as a once (or twice) in a lifetime thing and then never again because it can be dangerous but that's why I just want to experience it once just because I just want to see the beautiful blue sky in the air!!

@@SuperDavidBrothersI don’t know what question you are talking about. But I can tell you going at as low altitudes as buildings with a hang glider is in it self unrealistic, unless u are about to land that is. Going to work and back is also unrealistic. You rely on weather to create the hot air bringing you up into the sky. To start a hang gliding I suppose you most if not all of the time need some altitude to get into those hot air pockets(thermals). Going low altitude is not possible for far flights, you need the height to bring you between the thermals. Low altitude won’t bring you far enough to get from one to another.
Higher altitude is actually safer. Lets say you are at a relatively low altitude and don’t have any thermals, lets say you also have nowhere close to land because of trees or such. You will need to land in a dangerous way.
If you got alot of altitude and no thermals you have way more likelihood of finding a good place to land.
This is a sport for fun, not for traveling to any planned location. You rely on weather to be able to fly.

    • @ericoschmitt
      @ericoschmitt 2 года назад +1

Gliders, as the name suggest, are always gliding down in relation to the air around it. But if the air is rising faster than the glider is going down, it climbs (thermals and ridge lift). Think about leafs going up in the wind, gliders are the same except we can control where we are going... And we go where the air is rising and where our vario beeps the fastest!
A glider like his will sink just under 1 meter per second. If the air is rising 2m/s then you go up 1m/s (2 - 1 = 1). Some thermals go up in excess of 10m/s on strong days. 3m/s are normal.

The other way is having a rescue driver, usually a friend that we pay the burger and beer afterwards :)
Theres also uber these days. Leave the glider at the field, get the car, drive down, get the glider, go home.
My local club usually has a lift truck operating, goes up and down in the morning taking pilots to the launch. As long as you don't go cross country your car will be parked at the landing zone.
Finally, I've left a bicycle at the landing zone before flying, and cycled up the hill later (same as uber). I've also walked. My home site is a 30min walk, no big deal and good exercise.

@@birdmusic1206 Dude if you take every single person on the planet (around about 7 billion) on the same place with the same population density of Manhattam (70,000 people per square mile) you would need only a state the size of Oregon to fit them all. So overpopulation is overrated!
The problem is the lifestyle (all the garbage, plastic and planned obsolescence from Capitalism's Greedy tooth)

@@VelhaGuardaTricolor I think the issue with overpopulation is the fact that there isn't enough resources to support the 7 billion (nearly 8 billion) people on Earth, which will only get worse if the population increases, not the fact that everyone takes up so much space. Bad lifestyle is also a contributing factor.

@@horntail-wyvern2803 There would be plenty resources for even 200 billion people living outside this Capitalist/NeoLiberal/Consumeristic/Greedy/Vanity driven society. Like Gandhi once said: "The world has enough for everyone's needs, but not everyone's greed,"
The problem was never overpopulation (mind you I don't think there ought to be more than 1 billion people walking around at any given time)

You don't jump off a cliff on your first lesson. Foot launch beginner lessons are a blast and very safe. You can fly a little off the ground on your first lesson and that IS flying.

@@mrbriggi I was surprised to be taken to a mountain top after only a few very short flights on the training hill. We may have learnt how to control the glider but the fear factor is something that instructors can't really take into account in my opinion!
