  • On May 31st, Joachim Denzler and Markus Reichstein, directors of the ELLIS Unit Jena, organized the workshop titled "Forecasting the Future: AI in Early Warning Systems." This event featured distinguished speakers such as Giulia Martini from the United Nations World Food Program, Shruti Nath from the University of Oxford, Kai Kornhuber from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, and Vitus Benson from the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry and ETH Zurich.
The workshop delved into various topics including geospatial vegetation forecasting, optimization of humanitarian aid supply chains, and the analysis of extreme heatwave risks. It aimed to build upon the success of last year's AI for Global Summit ML workshop, continuing the dialogue on AI's pivotal role in addressing climate change and its impacts.
On the same day, Markus Reichstein took Center Stage, discussing the transformative potential of AI in environmental protection. He was joined by Sage Lenier, Claire Monteleoni from the University of Colorado Boulder, and Bjorn Stevens from the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. Their discussions highlighted AI's ability to analyze Earth data for biosphere conservation and its role in educating future generations about climate issues.
The session underscored the importance of collaboration in driving effective climate action. Additionally, the ELLIS Unit Jena hosted an engaging booth in collaboration with the ELLIS Society, showcasing its research through visually compelling infographics, roll-ups, and posters. These materials provided insights into the groundbreaking research conducted within the ELLIS network and highlighted the unit's contributions to advancing AI-driven solutions for global challenges.
