You are working that magic John! Looks great! Yes the video where Mr. Pete goes to the hammer factory is a great one! Tubal Cain is a RUclips legend! One of the greats.
Great that you saved and refined the nice little Vaughn ball peen hammer. Reshaping the facets and saving the handle gave it a new and respectable life. Must have been a Monday hammer. Excellent work!
Thanks for the tip. I've watched alot of Mr Pete's videos, and they are very educational, not to mention fun. Missed the Vaughan factory tour, so I went back and watched it. Very interesting. I have Vaughan, Estwing and Stanley hammers. Thanks
It is fun to remember how you find youtube channels. I started at Engel's coach shop. In one of his thank you videos, he showed a beautiful polished auto wrench with red accents sent to him by Scoutcrafter. Dave Engels recommended Scoutcrafter's channel so I checked it out. Then in one of Scoutcrafter's videos he recommended Mr. Pete, 357Magdad, and Tool Addict. I do watch youtube recommended stuff sometimes, but most of my subs are from recommendation of the people i am already watching. Its a community thing.
I found Engel's Coach Shop when I clicked on a video about making wooden buckets but the man kept rattling on about pretty much nothing. I noticed a recommendation to the side for a video about making a 1,000 pound wagon wheel. Clicked on that and was hooked and drawn into watching the Borax wagon project. Like you I have found several channels from Dave's recommendations which have branched out to several others such as This Old Tony, Abom79 etc. Always like to learn something new, or ways to improve on methods I thought I had perfected. There's always room for improvement.
The head was a right mess but you soon sorted it out, very nice 👍 My late father used to use the other style of metal wedges I have seen you using in the past, it would be nice to think I had some of them amongst all the screws and nails I got from him.
When I see rough tools like that, I wonder if it was WWII production where it had to be rushed. When I was a Tenderfoot my old man gave me a WWII hand axe. It was very rough and painted OD. It was ugly compared to the Plumbs. Somebody stole it and I wasn't even upset. I still have the entrenching tool that Dad gave me 58 years ago. The "Dake", the difference between men and boys is the size and cost of our toys. Good Luck, Rick
What a turnaround on that hammer!! I like the very slight angle on it too as you mentioned in another video. I'm really liking that gun stock stain. Your flap wheel skills are awesome. I hope with more practice, I can be that good! I need a Dake, a metal lathe and.... and..... Beautiful hammer!!
You made that look great John. I’m kind of a hammer guy myself, I guess it’s because they are fun to do. I agree that handle did seem pretty long. Thanks for sharing.
Now about the hammer... You did a great job as usual. You took a junky worthless hammer and made it into something of value. I think there are about 20,000 people who want it, now that its been touched by the master's hand! Idea! If you are still feeling like doing a hammer project, find one with a handle you can put in the lathe and turn it to be like one of those "palm swell" handled hammers that the tool addict likes so much!
Beautiful job done. Would enjoy seeing some wizard tool restorations. You don’t find many wizard tools anymore. My grandfather used to get his at old western auto store and yes USA made and still around today functioning well. How about a wizard socket set at ratchet restoration. John it would just be nice to see your collection of wizard tools. Also would love your intellect on who manufactured them, when they went out of business. You’re the man that can definitely draw my undivided attention in the basement of yours. Great stuff my friend. Rob from the Ozarks in Missouri.
Spot on, and I agree fully, if you’re whaling away, you’re hammer isn’t big enough! There’s no issue than can’t be solved with a good hammer, it’s purely down to correct selection!
You definitely did it justice. I love the gunstock finish. I have learned that if the head does not have the script "wear safety goggles" then it is pretty old. Nice video!
John, what do you do with all of these restorations? I find that as I progress, friends and family ask for the tools I’ve restored. I gladly share them with them. My guess is that you’ve got a massive stockpile of old tools turned into art that you’re hanging on to. Nobody has that many friends and family. Maybe you could do a video of your completed tool restorations and how you store them?
John- The funny thing is as you know I am planning (🥴) a move and every so often I put 10 or 15 restorations in a box and store them- I have no idea where anything is!!! 😂😂😂
John ,I have a Vaughn hammer that I used for over48 yrs., but the look of mine was a lot sharper! Great hammers ,maybe that one was made on Monday?Haha! Great job on that hammer, made it look better than factory! GOD Bless!
I've been hanging axes for my company for awhile now. I use a large Stanley clamp to put the wood wedges in. I dont have a dake so I can have that much fun lol
“I don’t usually save junk!” Chuckle! Come on, John , even you know you would save chewing gum wrappers if you thought you might need one some day! LOL! LOL! Keep em coming, buddy. We love it!
I save all my chewing gum wrappers they always come in handy when it's time to dispose of the chewing gum can't blame me next time you step in chewing gum.
Thanks John , that was just in time ,and very helpful . As I started to do a hammer today . Mine is a recent Garage sale pick up, and it is even even worse shape than yours. Mine has been beat up ,rusted out , and I even noticed weld splatters on it.I normally don't restore tools I use , but this one is a great canidate , and just the right weight for my shop.
John: I use Linseed on all my tool handles inside or outdoor usage, Linseed Oil gives the wood a little bit more flexibility, plus you can always finish over the Linseed oil w/paint or Varnish or Tung Oil.
When I was in my 20's I linseed oiled everything! I went thru gallons! However it's a dirt magnet and I like my restored tools to look good for a while! LOL
I have an ugly hammer just like that. I like the longer handle because I use mine as a tire thumper on my big rig. Thanks for the tutorial. I need to replace the cheap handle it came with because it is splitting and now I know how.
You're a real master of the angle grinder getting those facets so nice. And who doesn't like an opportunity to use/see the Dake in action. Great job all around!! I'm sure Vaughan would thank you for removing their name.👍😀
C"mon, Scout, don't be so coy. that hammer turned out far better than just "respectable". In fact, it's so respectable, I'm shamed into reviving the Vaughan which I keep at my bench.
@@ScoutCrafter The most used hammer I have is the ugliest. It's a shopmade 2# copper hammer. When my buddy, Tommy was still alive, he worked in a heavy machine shop at a steel mill. Same here, I wanted a wood handle one and almost got Estwing before I realized it wasn’t made in the USA. Ended up finding a Craftsman (new but must be pre-Taiwan)
