Self-Referential Filters with Notion Databases

- On Cinqo de Mayo, Notion dropped an unexpected surprise for power users of Notion Tables. If you create multiple linked databases, you used to run into the issue of having to manually re-filter these tables.
Now, by adding a new filter (via the template button) these linked databases DYNAMICALLY UPDATE.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the clear and to-the-point explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
Wonderful. This is what I was looking for. Thanks a lot.
My pleasure
Dude! Thank you so much! I even asked Notion how to do this and they said it wasn't possible to auto-set parent filters. This will save me so much time. Thank you so much.
Glad I could help! Makes me so happy!
Thank you for this video: I have been struggling with connecting a main view with a sub view. Thanks for providing the solution!
You're very welcome!
Thanks! This was really helpful
Glad to hear!
just saw this video today! such a game changer! exactly what i needed to take my client database to the next level!
YESS, Benny!
You save our 40 college times! so amazing!
Thank you! If you don't see the label "self-referential filter" in the list when you're setting it up, it will still work - you just have to select the template as the page to filter by, which doesn't seem to display the self-referential label anymore.
I believe they changed this screen since I last published the video
You are my idol jajajaja
Thank you! I thought this wasn't possible and did the manual filter all the time just to realize that you can select template name as well!
this is such an under-appreciated feature!
Wow! Howcome I didn't see that, I actually did this manually a couple of days ago but now that I have discovered this, which btw thank to your channel, I can just follow this! Thank you so much!!
P. S. I'm a beginner to notion so don't judge me by not knowing this already.
Glad I could help! And no judgment - this is some ninja stuff!
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi! Thanks for this! I would like to use this with fillout, do you know if its possible to use fillout to fill those fields but with this template so it still linked to the client? Also, I would like to make http link in the template but with parameter and those parameter to be the client name, client email...etc Is it possible to selfreferal properties? Thanks again!
Thanks Patrick, I appreciate you watching. I’ve actually stopped using Notion and making Notion videos. I’d recommend (as I’m sure u know): William Nutt, August Bradley, Marie Poulin
Great video indeed. JUST what I have been looking for the past days. Its amazing sometimes how answers come look YOU up. But..hehe..when I first saw the name of your channel I was expecting a tutorial in vietnamese ;-)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Have the self-referential filters disappeared from Notion now (as at Oct 2023?)
I think they've changed the set-up on them. Unfort I no longer make notion vids. Have u checked out Marie Poulin's channel?
I came from your collaboration video with Ali Abdaal
Info Tech that was a fun one!
Awesome 💯
Thanks 🔥
Hi Khe,
Thanks for the easy directions for this shortcut! I‘m stuck on a small issue and hope you can clarify: if I finish the task “Release the new Yeezys” and check it as DONE in my Tasks Table, how can I get it to disappear from “Kanye West”? The task disappears from the linked database table in Kanye’s own page, but it remains in the “Related to Tasks DB” linked column in the overall Clients DB table. This confuses me because a DONE tasks stays visible when I visit Kanye’s task list to see what I need to accomplish for him as a client, and mixes in with the tasks I have yet to finish. Hope you can take a minute to help me out, and thanks so much for your time!
I just commented on this video with essentially this same request and then 2 minutes later I saw your comment. Have you had any progress in this area?
If you could please post some tips on how to set up a habit tracker that is NOT daily (meditate 3x a week), would really appreciate it
That's an interesting use case. I'd use a formula, which you keep adding 3 days to, which creates a flag = TRUE/FALSE... then filter your views accordingly
Thank you so much for this amazing video that Notion should've themselves released instead of a complex Tweet explaining this feature :(
Does this still work? I can't seem to get it working.
Nevermind, for anyone reading this, just click the name of your template. (the little details for each entry are hidden in 2022 I think)
Thanks for pointing me to this video. Is this feature for paid subscriptions only or do you refer to power users as, well, "power users"? I'm asking as I don't see this filter appearing in my template...
This is a free feature for everyone, Friso!
Do you know of any way to have the related tasks showing up on the Client's page to only show the incomplete tasks? Let's say you have a Done checkbox or a Status select column (To Do, Doing, Done, etc). We would only want to see the tasks where either the done checkbox is unchecked or the Status is not DONE. Is this possible?
From your demonstration adding a new client isnt quite streamlined.
From watching the video, you first add a new client and then go back to task db and assign a task to the new client.
Couldn't I assign a task in the client on the fly ?
not sure i'm following - can u share a loom?
Nasty!
yeeeeeh - get it!
