This guy really expressed his dislike for push on fittings for years and now a company pays him to promote their push on fittings. The entire test is dumb since your home water pressure is somewhere between 40-80 psig. A hydro test by industry standard would just go to 1.5x design pressure.
I agree, he himself has said years ago that his company fixes leaky push on fittings all the time. To be fair, some houses have higher water pressure (my house has 110-120 PSI) and that pressure can spike by several times from water hammer, which could be a problem. My concern with these fittings is mostly the potential for the O ring to deteriorate over time like anything rubber inevitably will. I have no problem using these fittings for temporary fixes in exposed areas, but we know people use them behind walls, in attics, etc and cause major damage when they start leaking and no one knows until it's too late and the damage is done.
@@averyalexander2303 Agreed. I don't even like pro press for the same reason: The black rubber o-ring! I've used pro press when it's specced for the job,or on a repair or two,but I am not a believer in it.
@@daddy1571 pro press is the next best thing to soldering if installed properly. I’ve used it on homes with a 120psi measurement. Although that being extremely rare in itself. For long term and “professional” appearing work soldering or pro press are your best options.
@@malik-ll9yz I really like pro press for service. I just think in new commercial it looks like dog$hit because with pressure,it tends to sag a little. Plus the o-ring seems not to great
@@daddy1571 I understand that, with an inch-half main supply it can sag if it properly supported every 3 feet. Although for residential use it beats soldering for quick repairs and not having to worry about water being in the pipes to get a right seal

@@patrickmorris4335yeah he’s being paid but I think he originally did not like shark bites but once he learned about quick fittings being far superior he changed his mind. He still says you shouldn’t plumb you’re entire house with push to connect fittings no matter what the brand

Keep telling ya self that. We will be winning bids and working with pex. Copper isn’t the problem. K copper being used in residential plumbing is the issue. And the minerals and acidity of water. So keep filling out estimates for copper. We gonna run get 3 houses plumbed this week.
@@pjplumber2146 I don’t use type K copper for residential installs. I use type L. And don’t fool yourself youngster! I guarantee your not doing any work, your laborers are doing it for you. LOL! And anyone can do Pex takes no skill. I bet your pex jobs look sloppy. Go ahead and keep running through your jobs! LOL
While I agree, I don't think you will see copper much at all, at least in residential new construction. Unlike the previous building recession where we saw copper prices plummet in 2008-9, I don't expect to see the same given the huge drive to electric everything this time around. I think it's going to be a real struggle to meet copper demand these next few years until maybe other alloys come to the market, If that's even feasible. Already see far more AL wire in homes now on large feeds and subpanels then just a few years ago.

Yeah it really does and only costs the customer 10x to do the exact thing and takes 10x as long to install. A homeowner can literally fix pex or cpvc and push ons with zero effort. Can't have that though. Good luck winning bids because younger people have no loyalty to a type of pipe they just want an affordable water supply in their home.

@@RogerWakefield No, I am second owner of a 1980 house. I added wall board, whole house filter (Particulate / Activated Carbon) water softener then into water heater to house. Lawn irrigation it 3/4” line prior to filtration after I installed ball valve after meter for whole house years ago. They are soldered using a plate steel hanging behind next to wall. This was way before these were invented! Thanks!
More testing would be more convincing. Especially considering manufacturing tolerances and user errors potentially involved. Maybe a durability over time test with different pressures. This video was short and sweet but I wanted to see more.
Or you can just do the math using this test and you’ll have a result.

@@JS-hl1oc every person knows that a house cannot produce thousands of pounds of pressure. So you use the pressure they applied here and covert it into how long would it take to equal the amount of pressure wear vs time wear and then you can have and a approximate result.
Idk i’m just saying what i understand will work.
I like those pressure tests. But to me a failure is when it starts leaking. It would be interesting to see tests around that (will look for those on this channel; I'm new to this channel so may have missed it).
Now do pro press vs push on. I’ve had a lot of naysayers tell me I’m crazy for thinking push on fittings probably hold better
Lmfao there has been a test, Virgo held up to like 1900, sharkbite was 500ish, solder was 1100ish. Push fittings are for people who can’t solder when they have to

I agree but I’m not a fan of pro press fittings either. I’ve seen them wiggle around and move a lot more than I’m comfortable with. Especially if you have a system with a lot of thermal cycling. Worst of all they don’t seem to last even a year in hot water loops that are continuously circulating. I don’t trust pro press enough for my house. And I fell it goes without saying I wouldn’t leave a push on fitting in my house longer than a couple of days until I had time to do it right. Idk have they ever showed how easy a jet sweat repair is on this channel I wonder.
How does it fair in well below freezing temps? We had that cold here in NC over the Christmas holiday and were seeing even propress fittings popping off.
Yep NC got it good. just fixed 8 leaks at one house yesterday in copper. Was also wondering how well these held up in freezing temps. Cause I know for a fact shark bite will freeze and blow apart. Fixed a leak from one of them on Tuesday
@@tannerwest6823 could you give more details.? Where the leaks fixed to copper/ solder.. or where the leaks soldered joints.? My experience, usually the copper pipe will split open before a solder joint gives out.

@@garycasper2929 yea most all the leaks were on straight runs of copper before the soldered fitting. Just inch long splits where it blows the pipe out. Fix one turn the water back on and then find the next one. It can be a nightmare especially if the homeowner doesn’t have all the holes in their foundation covered up/insulated

I been fixing copper piping burst here in Wisconsin I’m replacing all to pex it’s just easier and easy to replace I never liked copper pipe

@@sonacphotos yeah after 30-40 years. I think pex is rated up to 50 year lifespan but I’ve fixed plenty of pinholes in pex pipe as well. Usually pex that’s 15 years old+ and it usually seems to be on the hot water line
@@sonacphotos yea I honestly don’t know why it happens like that but just from experience it’s always the hot water lines on pex and many times it’s right near the water heater. At least the leaks I’ve fixed on pex. Nothing is perfect
Cheaper, same results, faster, lower labor cost, customer can do their own repairs, and withstands cold Temps much better.

My contention with SharkBite or whatever has always been longevity especially on plastic pipe. The grip rings dig in and slip and the o-rings are made out of rubber, what does rubber do overtime? It deteriorates. Also, maybe if you could add something to the pressure chamber that simulates water hammer?
Rubber does not deteriorate over time. It is a misconception. Read about EPDM.
It's neoprene, a synthetic rubber
It's amazing the effort someone will go to design a setup in a way to try and get the results they are looking for. You hate all sharkbite and press fittings. It's ridiculous

Can you do, or have you done, testing of Quick Fittings vs. PEX A and vs. PEX B with clamps?
I've tested PEX A vs B, not along side QuickFitting however....
Roger you sold me on the product. BUT I tried to find the part i needed and they referred me to Home Depot. That fitting didn't appear at Home Depot. I wasn't even sure if Quickfitting or Probite made it so I called sales (No Answer). Then I called their customer service (no answer). This is very concerning considering a "75 year warranty and they don't answer the phone" PS the part I needed and purchased was SharkBite 3/4 in. Push-to-Connect PVC IPS x 3/4 in. MIP Brass Adapter Fitting.
So I've seen copper pipe split lengthwise from a freezing event (which means ice forming generated more pressure than your test), I've always wondered how it effects the sharkbite style fittings. I think Pex does OK freezing but do the fittings?
That would be an interesting test! Great idea.
I think the fitting would survive, but the pex would burst. Ice will expand into the available space, and plastic will make space by stretching. It might even survive the freeze, but will have a bulge that bursts next freeze.
This is where Pex A ears it's keep. Freeze ups. I live in the Northeast and have seen A pex freeze flex and NOT fail. And the pipe wall is half (at least) as strong as the fitting body, pipe and sleeve combination. Do PTC's and PP hold up to ice? With a tiny O ring? Lol lol lol....... Maybe Roger can test that for us.
I have had mine freeze both pex and sharkbites fine polybutylene not good when froze
The fittings are the weak point for pex, whether plastic or brass for the expansion pex is the points of failure and the most important for keeping insulated and away from foundation walls.
Those pressures will never be seen in normal operation. Sure they are convient and save time, but what is thw story over the long run? That is why as an engineer I will never specify them. They may warranty the product itself but what about water damage?

@@timjohnson6864 water is incompressible. There is no material that resist the pressure except for polymers like pex which just stretch. Thats what insulation and heat tracing is for.

Viega pex press is the best fitting , and it’s rated for direct burial
I usually can only build that kind of pressure after eating bean burritos.
what was the temp on the pipe at the time?
I knew the solder would hold up. If the person who solder it together knows what he’s doing it will hold up for years. This is why I still do this, but I do like quick fitting to hold almost 2000 psi is very impressive.
it really means nothing, as municipal water supply never approaches 2k psi, or even 900 psi.

These quick connections are fine "under" a house, not in walls. And what does the guarantee cover? Just the part or part plus damage?

Mine did on Saturday, can't find anyone in the area to flare a copper pipe. Going into day 4 of no water, any suggestions are welcome@

SOLD OUT! A year ago roger told us the truth, plumbers don’t push fittings. A little bit of money later and now , “he’s partnered up”. Gross af frfr
impressive, but it doesn't show how long the O-ring will last without drying out, especially on hot water. great for a emergency repair though, always a great idea to have quick fittings on hand. Even as a homeowner, saved me a few times
I have 2 females directly on my heater and with pex directly connected. My house I’m the plumber. In a 10’ tall crawlspace. The last heater was 16 years old. So I reused those shark bites and put on new tank. We are on year 5 of both. So total of 21 years. They were my first sharkbite purchase for a test. So far. Your wrong.
@@pjplumber2146 That's good, but i still would not plumb a whole house with them, one small nick or defect and it will leak. They're like the backstab on an outlet to me, sometimes they'll work great but most times they'll fail, i just can't make myself trust it. it's all opinions and how you feel about it though i guess.
@@gtb81. most times they will fail is a lie. In Europe and Asia they primarily use push connects and if these type of connections had a high fail rate they would not be the standard there.
@@RedRyz3n then why does every plumber dislike push connectors, even roger expressed his disapproval in a few videos prior. also i did not say they will fail most times, i was making a correlation between two technologies i do not like. i said i am skeptical of the longevity of he O-ring lasting, also i thought europe and asia used compression fittings, not quick fittings

Sharkbite exceeded the 200 psi rating sir by 4 times the certified rating and who is going to have 900 psi in any home or commercial building 😅
Here's the thing. It's an oring end result. On our trucks with air brakes they use these quick connects. They run at 130 psi all day. They DO fail. We just replace the orings and continue. They are good when they're on a vehicle you just repair. Inside a wall where they will cause damage NO

Your shark bite connections, and the other work connections rely on overage show me were no ring hasn’t failed overtime and I’ll Byam other than that I will be silent because solder joints don’t fail
I’m the same way, I prefer solder joints over most other ones. They last longer 🤷🏻♂️
Been a plumber for 7 years and it's sad seeing you sell put to a push to connect company.
I know so I know you know that unrealistic water pressures aren't the determining factor for connections and water line materials.

THIS so much. It would be a better test to test longevity with pressure change on a bunch of joints to eliminate potential defects. This is just an ad by the same guy who's been say "I've never used a sharkbite" for years. It's pathetic anyone is giving him any praise.
I was never impressed with sharkbite. This limit test confirms my suspicion that sharkbite is POS.
That is still like 10x-15x at least the psi of home water pressure.

Fun but totally useless. So a Shark failed at 895? Big deal. What HD or Lowes customer is ever going to be applying pressure anywhere in that range around the home? They're not. I don't like them or trust them but that is a time proven consideration. How will they stand the test of time. same for ProPress. A Sharkbite for pro's that like speed over longevity. Still an o ring sealing the joint not the area of the sweat joint holds a fitting with. Quick Fitting is better than PP ( if ultimate pressure is the criteria) so why would I invest in that clumsy and overprice tool? Set up a freeze situation, a vibration one or one in a heating zone.....Rig up a water hammer deal and see who fails first. real world stuff Rog. YOU can do it.
Freezing is kind of a useless test too, as the psi that ice exerts will rupture the copper pipe itself, rip a seam right in the middle of the pipe, let alone any connections that are inherently weaker than the pipe itself.

@@peterschulties3258 Much less skilled than it used to be. I am a homeowner and do all my own plumbing because it's pretty easy. In the days before no hub couplings, PVC waste, and PEX I definitely would have called a plumber. 99 percent of people wouldn't pour lead joints on cast iron. 90 percent of people won't solder copper. But glue PVC and crimp PEX? Way easier.
Highly necessary as many plumbers are aging out and retiring and there isn't enough younger people to replace them.
There's zero reason to be using copper and solder, we don't need to increase the cost to the homeowner on materials and labor 10x to do what can be done with pex and push on fittings. No one is ever gonna see 1000 psi in their home water supply. Thankfully younger plumbers aren't stuck in 1985 resisting new techniques to a fault. Copper also freezes and splits easier than pex and cpvc. The teeth bite much better in pex and cpvc. Either fitting works fine.
Come on brother, cpvc doesn't split it shatters like glass and at higher temperatures then copper. I just did a job on an 11-year-old house, mcmansion if you will. The entire hot side of their water system is failing, I'm guessing their recirc pumps have something to do with it. My point is the house is only 11 yrs old, cpvc is garbage!
