Best video i have 'heard' on modes. So many videos talk about all the modes in the key of C because it's easy to show it that way. Modes are meant to be heard and felt! Well done!
Bus ride with Lydian is a trip to the mountains. Bus ride with Mixo is a trip to Greece seaside Phrygian - moving to Greece countryside at dusk... Dorian - Roman legion appears out of nowhere Locrian - taken into slavery and resettled in Spain
Yep. It's about hearing the modes. I did a different video in the same vein ... with words like "sad", "happy", "tough" ... but without the bus! Love it!!
I only heard about the modes couple of days ago. So I checked your series on them. Great explains tons I must say because I'm not confused at all. This video makes it all the better. 👌
3:49 I love that when Sean describes a "a little bit of darkness" Ian immediately plays a "darker" note (flatted from where it was supposed to be). That's modal music in action really!
This is very Tappet Brothers - see NPR show “Car Talk”. You guys are the “Click” and “Clack” of guitar world videos. Serious knowledge and skill with a side of fun. Well done.
For me the mixolydian is like being on a bus happy because you have finally gotten angry enough to leave a bad situation. The phrygian is like you're on a bus and realizing you're on the wrong one and you're lost and don't know what you're going to do.
Love the video! Very informative and helped me to better understand the modes and what they are used for. Thank you for this video! Also, Bus Court should totally be the next TV show! Lol
Thank you for this series ! Always had hard time understanding Modes until came to this. The Bus metaphor is just awesome to remember the mood. Cheers from India ! :-)
Dude u guys are totally my friends from high school, I semi reminisce and full on learn when I watch ur vids!! And I’m like a very beginner here just starting to get some connective tissue as far as my chord changing fluidity. Any helpful tips tricks and or drills ??? Gratzie kind sir!!
I haven't had this much fun watching a video I don't think maybe even ever.. OMGosh.. too many hardy belly laughs.. I loved this bus ride most of the way but right there near the end? I'm think'n maybe I shoulda stayed home today.. lol.. you gize are awesome together.. too much fun.. love this video and it gives purpose to the sounds of a mode.. or maybe; a mood, yes?
Dorian is best described as bittersweet IMHO. Also one question - why were the first three modes you showed the "major" modes and the others minor modes? What makes them minor/major and what would happen if I play a "major" mode over a minor chord and vice versa?
Ionian, Lydian, and Mixolydian are called "major" because they have the major 3rd interval in them. Dorian, Phrygian, and Aeolian are called "minor" because they begin with a minor 3rd interval. Locrian also begins with a minor 3rd, but has a b5 also, so it is sometimes called "diminished". As to what would happen if you played a major mode over a minor chord? Well, try it! And have fun with it.
Another way to hear the modes, and easier way I believe because you don't have to change the scale. Use the G Major diatonic scale. Play a G major chord with it, you have major. Play a a minor chord, you have dorion, play a b minor chord with it, you have Phrydgion.....etc
Could you do the same exercise only stay with the g maj scale and resolve or stay on all the chords in the scale. In other words change the chord not the scale. Same difference right?
I recently heard the Simple Minds song, "Don't You Forget About Me" which has this very haunting 1985-esque sound. It's an odd "new-wave-ish" sound that's no longer used. What is that? Is it a mode thing? Or something else?
That's actually a good question. It's definitely a style of mixing/reverb that dates the song, but you think with the retro-fad happening, more people would try it.
My understanding of modes in this key of G example: I would play Ionian from the G on the 3rd fret of the low E string and dorian from the A at the 5th fret of the low E string and so on. In the video he is staying at the same area of the neck. Is he basically just using the G as the root note for Ionian and the A in the same area on the neck for the dorian and so forth?
Randy kahn Nope! In this video they’re sticking to the same root note and building the mode from it. This is essentially changing keys, as each mode would be derived from a different Major scale. What your talking about would be modes derived from the same key. Also very important to understand!
This is arguably the most important modes video ever made. Hey, I realized only recently that Stich and I have the exact same playing position! Why did *you* choose that position Ian? For me it's simply that I can't rotate my wrist far enough to play horizontally, but I found the Classical position a little awkward, so I hybridized the two.
I imagine an animated video (a companion video to this) viualizing an actual bus ride with changing moods (and modes). Where are your animation chops, Sean?! :-) Great Video!! Thanks
One thing I have noticed in all your mode videos you have done is that you don't ever talk about while it is a G chord, it might actually originate in a different scale (which I think would be helpful for a lot of people trying to wrap their heads around initially)... For example (and I totally get that you know all these things) G lydian you mention has a sharp 4... But it would be helpful perhaps to also mention that it stems from the D scale... Or that G mixolydian stems from the C scale, etc - and that the actual scales aren't part of the actual G scale any more... It might help them start to put all the pieces of the puzzle together...
You know I can create fill licks, i understand all the tips you have ever given about playing lead, but damned if i can play true lead. Solo guitar yes , solos no. I find myself falling in to rhythm mode even when trying to play lead .
Thanks guys...I now no longer give a shit about wanting to learn the modes. I'm quite content with pentatonic and diatonic with the blue note available. No seriously, thanks!
Ionian Mode == Raga Bilawal
Dorian mode == Raga Kafi
Phrygian mode == Raga Bhairavi

Western modes and their Indian counterpart :).
Well done. Thank you!
Marley mode == Raga Muffin
Man thanks so much for sharing that!
You are welcome. My cool uncle taught me this, earlier this year when I was in India :)
Those are called "thaats" on the basis of thaats there are different ragas.

Thaat bheiravi
Thaat todi...

I'll take it.
What a descriptive & informative lesson you two!!! Thank you both 👍🏾👍🏼🎶🤝🏼
Thanks for watching David!
Wait! This is the best modes video ever made!
This is actually the most important videos on Modes.
You can tell how much planning went into this by that thumbnail graphic
Stepping it up a notch
Great lesson on modes! The bus metaphors had me in stitches. 😂
"Stitches" hahaha ha
I've only ever gotten good, useful information from this guy. Great videos
Thanks so much David!
This is educational AND HYSTERICAL!

GuiTar Talk with Pik and Yak 😁
Finally freaking got it! Thanks!!!
Didn't realized modes made musicians so giddy and giggly. They're very happy, for sure.
For me the mixolydian is like being on a bus happy because you have finally gotten angry enough to leave a bad situation. The phrygian is like you're on a bus and realizing you're on the wrong one and you're lost and don't know what you're going to do.

BUS COURT IS IN SESSION!
Thank you for this series ! Always had hard time understanding Modes until came to this. The Bus metaphor is just awesome to remember the mood. Cheers from India ! :-)
This video was super helpful! And wonderfully humorous! You guys never disappoint.
Thanks Melissa!
You BUSted it guys.
smokin' that is legal now. that looked like fun and made it alittle easier..
I come back to this video all the time. Tbh I still don't 100% understand the modes, but the bus analogy always puts me in a good mood :)
I'm a beginner, didn't know about Modes until today. But your video is so cool. Instead of /Modes/ they should be called /Moods/ lol
Uncle metaphor cracked me up!
:)

Greatest explanation of the minor scale (aeolian) ever. EVER.
That was the best demo/interpretation of modes I've ever seen. Can't wait for the next episode of "Bus Court."
Thanks so much!
I'm excited to be invited to the premier of this epic film. I just hope interviewers go easy on you guys while walking down the red carpet.
They had their kidgloves on.
Phrygian = boldness, exuberance, passion, courage, leadership, but in excess pride, rashness, irascibility, violent anger.
Lydian = good cheer, optimism, subimity, friendliness, laughter, love and song.
Dorian = sleepiness, lethargy, laziness, slowness, mental dullness, forgetfulness, calmness, internal equanimity, well being.
Mixolydian = solidity, firmness, steadfastness, rhythm, but with a certain indolent tenaciity.
No Pressure! 🙂
Check your instagram messages!! :)
Hopefully we didn't disappoint.
Never!😄
What a trio you guys would make!
Bump. Because funny and good - just a bus thing, guys.
Wow... crazy... The Stich method guy and Sean... two of my favorite guitar teachers in one vid. Cool.
A bus came by and I got on; that's where it all began...
Cowboy Neil was at the wheel of the bus to never never land...
damn locrian was like the bus crashed and fell into a volcano and when i died in the lava i went to hell and continued burning
😂
I love your videos. Informative , and humorous at the same time. Keep up the good work. You've helped my playing a lot. Thanks.
So cool to hear Mark! I'll keep em coming!
Pretty good bus ride except for the swole boyfriend waiting at the next stop...better sit near the back at the emergency door😎thanks for the invite!
Always a good time on the bus.
Good comedic timing. 😂 reminds me of that episode of familly where Stewie plays guitar and explains how the chords make him feel.
Thanks so much!
This is excellent! Laughing my a$$ off and learning at the same time!
You guys are fun! And one of the best presentations on modes I’ve seen!
Thanks so much!
For me, as soon as Phrygian kicks in, the bus is suddenly Peruvian. I'm on my way to Cusco and that shit is breaking down for sure.
Learn Every Mode In Less Than 8 Minutes Without Memorizing or Practicing.

Favorite video 🤣 👍 I’ve been on the stinky cheese bus ride, and brown acid buss court.

BIG thumbs up !

the last one cracked me up so hard XD ..seriously the best video ever on modes, n i've not even seen all :P
Thanks so much!
This is the best explanation of modes I am ever likely to encounter. I now feel like an expert!
Not to be a downer, but It was more of a demo than an explanation.
@@HigherPlanes Man, you just ruined my night dude! LOL
@@rthib1960 If it makes you feel any better, I'm still figuring out modes.
I heard an Allman Brothers sound with that Mixolydian jam that you were playing.
funny. And informative.
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
You guys make guitar playing sound easy and fun 👍
Thanks so much!
Locrian--And the boyfriend's posse showed up.
If you weren't baked when you made this, you probably should've been.
That was great.
100% clean, just check my Bus Court drug test.
I still have no idea what modes are but the way you two played off of one another was well worth watching the video................. :)
Thanks Steve!
Dorian is best described as bittersweet IMHO.

What about moving positions?
Another way to hear the modes, and easier way I believe because you don't have to change the scale.
Use the G Major diatonic scale. Play a G major chord with it, you have major. Play a a minor chord, you have dorion, play a b minor chord with it, you have Phrydgion.....etc
Right on!
Could you do the same exercise only stay with the g maj scale and resolve or stay on all the chords in the scale. In other words change the chord not the scale. Same difference right?
Is it weird that I’m getting Mario vibes from this especially the desert levels
I'm so into Mario.

I'm gonna take a flyer on that. It's in the key of A but E is home so I'm guessing it's E Mixolydian.
That's actually a good question. It's definitely a style of mixing/reverb that dates the song, but you think with the retro-fad happening, more people would try it.
So are modes are scales?

Guess it's a secret. But it looks like there wasn't enough space to hold the guitar normally, he wanted to sit close to Sean
Cant wait :)
Hope you enjoyed!
thanks for that I really enjoyed the bus ride ... guess you threw the melodic & harmonic minor's under the bus

G lydian with a sharp 4th makes it the 4th degree of D ionian right?
Yup! You got it!
I imagine an animated video (a companion video to this) viualizing an actual bus ride with changing moods (and modes). Where are your animation chops, Sean?! :-) Great Video!! Thanks

Hey man, I've been watching Netflix and Hulu for "Bus Court". Whassup?
I wish I knew!
Is there a bar where you would jam these modes?
For sure!
Minor 🚌 sounded like it was headed to Mexico 💃🌮🚎
Get on the bus!
Yes. I am planning to come to the December seminar. Driving down. Not taking the bus.
And it's yours LMAO

Aeolian mode just found out my x's boyfriend has a gun, she doesn't think he will use it though. Dean.

Basically learn the major scale intervals and shift a note here and there to get a mode. Gotta go catch a bus.
What guitars are both of you playing. Great demonstration of the modal differences. Excellent
Thanks! Ian's got the Taylor GA3. I've got the Martin GPCPA4
