On a previous SOT episode somebody said velveeta cheese was one ingredient away from plastic…UK connection is one ingredient away from being a stand up comedy! Love this music chat with humor and alcohol, so perfect for Saturdays! Cheers
I absolutely enjoy The UK Connection. You will be entertained and walk away with more knowledge about the bands then you did at the start. You’ve got Pete (The Leader), Steven( The Professor) and Simon ((The Comedian) keeping you entertained the whole time. I would subscribe to a RUclips channel of Steven giving us the history of bands in a heartbeat. Thanks as always Pete for giving us the best channel on RUclips. SOT is the best.
Catching up on SoT viewing and finally a chance to watch the latest UK Connection episode. As always, informative, opinionated and laugh-filled with the addition of liquid spirits which deserve a try. Thanks, gents, and cheers!
''Sabaton? Never even 'erd of 'em.'' But that didn't stop me enjoying this most excellent and stimulating discussion. I have just downloaded a portion of their live show so I'll at least know what all the fuss is about. Thank you for the UK Connection, another winning formula from S.O.T.
As a Swedish Sabaton fan, it was interesting to hear your wievs on the band. One thing I would add is the lyric content. The fact that all songs are about real events do give Sabaton something that do make them stand out from others. I do not think they would be as successfull as they are if they just had "Dungeons and Dragons" - lyrics
I just commented Sabaton on the Meatloaf episode yesterday!! oh i'm looking forward to this. I, for one, am for Sabaton with exceptions of course. But they have a niche, and they do it well.
It's all about the music, but quite frankly, if all of you had spent the rest of the episode going on about your beverages, I don't believe I would've had a single complaint. Entertaining and hilarious!
Talking about Beer Pete. I always pour it into glass or tankard like Steven. There are aesthetic and good reasons for this. For a start it enhances the sensory experience, in that one can see the colour of the, beer, refracted in the light of the glass, and it creates the formation of a creamy foam head that traps the flavour. Also when poured into a glass from a bottle or can, some of the carbonated dioxide gas is released, so the beer contains less gas. Pouring into a glass also releases the full Aroma of the beer, so that one can smell the beer before drinking it, which has an effect on one's sensory experiences which increases enjoyment. Each time one of those tiny bubbles burst it releases a little burst of aroma. It is said 80% of one's perception of flavour is thanks to one's sense of smell, which favours using an open glass to drink poured beer, rather than enclosed in a container(Food tastes dull if one has a blocked nose!) At the of end the day, everyone has their preferred way, and a good beer however it is drunk, provides a good companion when listening to one's favourite music.
Please pardon the pedantry Pete, but Grolsch is a Dutch pilsener. 🍻 Fond memories of grabbing a 2 pack of ceramic flip top pints when we wanted to splurge when I was in college 😂.
Totally agree with you Stephen. I have seen them 12 times mainly in Germany 🇩🇪 great shows but my problem is they never seem to make long enough albums. They have a very good marketing strategy good luck to them. I saw the Accept Twighlight Force and Sabaton tour in Germany 🇩🇪 great show but so much merchandise for Sabaton getting somewhat ridiculous underwear kids t shirts etc. I remember reading an article years ago saying they want to be as big as Iron Maiden.
Sabaton is one of my favorite bands. I didn't like them back then, because they sounded very nightwish-ish..BUT after all these years, I fell in love with their music specially because of Joakim, he doesn't sing like Kotipelto or any other high pitch guy, and they write songs about real stuff. Nothing against dragons and wizards, but it gets like too much of it. Never had the pleasure of seeing them live, I would agree it's a live experience more than a cd experience, it's kinda like iron maiden and many other bands. Not having the experience of seeing them live..like in skin and bones...not a show on youtube... it's like eating pizza without cheese.
Cheers! My choice for tonight was Theakston Pale...😄 only heard a few bits and pieces by Sabaton which I though were Ok. Will definitely check out some more!
I love the Hobgoblin ruby beer, Simon. I buy it all the time. I used to really enjoy their "Fiddler's Elbow," but you can't get that anymore here in Ontario. I don't know if they still make it? I tend to drink a lot of British ale these days, and some microbrew Ontario stuff.
@@simonbrayfromsot1375 Now most of the British beers that they sell at the LCBO are in cans. Not too many bottles being carried these days, and that was when I used to buy it. I'll have to look online to see if I can still get it here. I'm glad they are still making it. I drink the Iron Maiden Trooper beer, Hobgoblin Ruby Ale, all the airplane ones....Spitfire, Lancaster, Bombadier, and Eagle IPA and Abbot Ale. Those are all easily available.
Enjoyed your chat about Sabaton .I have seen them live and agree they are excellent. I saw them in Dundee at Fat Sam's and then at same concert Steven was at ,in Barrowlands totally agree with you're comments Don't care for Alestorm either so need to watch myself as they are local to me as well . I would say that the album The Art of War is my favourite and there are memorable tracks .Thought the UK tour was only being delayed. Hope it's not been cancelled was looking forward to it .
I struggle with Sabaton, I’ve had albums and sold them, just can’t really can’t into them on CD like Steven has said. There are numerous parallels to Alestorm in particular, who have also blown up massively after having original band members leave. Nightwish are in the same boat really. Alestorm albums can be hit or miss, but live they are fantastic, their 2019 live album does cut out some of the “fluff” on cd but has a good mix of songs and silliness. I saw Alestorm’s tour in December 2021 with Gloryhammer and Bootyard Bandits, which was my favourite concert of last year and the best bill I’ve seen in a long time 😁
I love a good rum. I love a Dark 'n' Stormy too (rum and ginger beer). That Bothy rum looks interesting. Originally a Manc, I now live in Oxfordshire where the original Hobgoblin was brewed before being taken over by Marstons. As for the music, I know nothing about Sabaton. I'm about to learn. Great episode again, very well done Pete, Simon and Steven. The handpushing yoga style of Joakim Broden seems to be influenced by Rammstein singer Till Lindemann who do this since the 90s. And it's good to see you are passionate beer drinkers too. I have the pleasure living in the beer paradise of the world in Northern Bavaria also know as "Fränkische Schweiz" (transl. Franconian Switzerland). In our region around the cities of Forchheim, Bamberg and Bayreuth we have the highest density of breweries in the world. My favorite beers are Friedmann Hell, Friedmann Pils from Gräfenberg and Hofmann Hell from Hohenschwärz. And as I wrote there is so much other fantastic beer here to discover. Prost! Cheers!
Sabaton will always have a special place in my heart. It was my entry drug to metal in general, and when i first heard it i had never come in contact with that kind of niche music before, and also for its (rather superficial, but still existing) historical themes i really enjoyed it. True, they got some serious fillers :metal crüe and the like- but also some imo killer power ballads ( give "Wolfpack" a try! ). Then i saw them live at Nova Rock/Austria 2017, a mid-size rock festival. They werent supposed to headline, but since the actual headliners' lead vocalist went sick they got to perform parallel to green day. Which means: only die-hard sabaton fans were at the other stage to see them, they werent quite the name they are now yet, but on the rise. The show was amazing. As for the music... as soon as i got bored with the theme i pretty much stopped listening to their songs all that much. Id really like to see more songs like "attack of the dead men" which sound (at least somewhat) unique and stand out.
By coincidence, both the skull and Glamis feature in Shakespeare's plays: Glamis was mentioned in Macbeth (he was the Thane of Glamis), and the skull of Yoric features in Hamlet.
A great band. One of swedish finest and live they are fantastic, so much energy and power. They are very ambitious and have made songs about war from an historical view and based on facts. Every song is a historylesson. I would say musically they play basic Heavy Metal with a touch of Power Metal. If you havn't heard them you've got something to look forward to.
I checked out a couple of Sabaton tracks last year as I was intrigued after listening to Ryan and Steve Keeler argue about them on the Hudson Valley Squares. I didnt take it any further at the time as the voice put me off. Having just checked them out again though, I'm liking a lot more of what I'm hearing - I dont have an issue with the keyboards and the voice sounds to be in the same sort of register - maybe a bit lower - as Karsten 'Attila Dorn' Brill of Powerwolf whose music I came to get into after a previous one of these shows. I also checked out their website whihc shows they have got a few Blu Ray/DVDs available however there's also quite a few live shows on RUclips - but when checking out their site I took a listen to Christmas Truce off the forthcoming album, and like it a lot - then again I also love Savatage's Gutter Ballet. I do think, like a lot of other power metal, symphonic or prog metal bands that it can start to get a bit samey - however by not really recalling any or many of their songs it possibly means that you can listen to and appreciate any of their albums as they could all be quite interchangeable.
Man I guess I am flexible on bands sounds, I love Heavy Sabaton of course and so I was skeptical about their songs Christmas Truce and Steel Commanders but those songs grew on me fast and they honestly, touched my heart, especially Truce. Sabaton IMO has integrated symphonic metal into its power metal seamlessly to create more emotion than ever!
@@TranquilityFireReid I am not sure if I would buy there albums .In there videos they sound good but when I listen to the songs then there's something missing for me,so I would buy any time soon
I'm not a super-friendly with these so-called (newer) power metal bands, but I absoluty love finnish own Battle Beast, especially Noora Louhimo. What a amazing & powerful vocalist she is! And their new album is great IMO.
You make an interesting point Pete at 19:10 as Im one of those people. Most metal I listen to is proper heavy ie, death, black, doom, thrash and traditional. My reason for loving Sabaton is that it's metal that's not aggressive. It's music for when you want less aggression but not full on pop so to speak.
FACK! I have a feeling I'm going to end up buying a Sabaton album after this. I was going to see them with Priest at the rescheduled show, but now that it's been re-rescheduled it'll be Queensryche (it's been so long I can't even remember who was on the original bill).
While I agree power metal has largely been in an odd place of no guitars for some time now (there are exceptions obviously), I do not think this has anything to do with Sabaton. Most of those bands, like Twilight Force, are high-fantasy bands making songs that sounds a bit like a movie score. Its mostly, if not exclusively, Rhapsody of Fire inspired. I don't think Alestorm is inspired by Sabaton either, they are influenced by the Finnish folk metal scene: Korpiklaani, Finntroll, Ensiferum and so on.
I came late to the party with Sabaton. I found them in 2016, and have played their albums to death ever since. As for Sabaton being power metal or not, their subject matter certainly is. Their sense of drama also is, but the music has turned poppy in recent times. Parts of The Great War is borderline Eurovision in places, especially taking into account bands like Wig Wam from Norway and Lordi from Finland have participated in that cheese fest.
I’ve listened to a little of Sabaton and they are one of those bands for me that I think one album is enough I have no inclination to go and buy more because I won’t get anything different from them. That said the same goes for most power metal bands I’ve listened too. Even the few bamds I like , Helloween and Primal Fear 3 or 4 albums are enough I don’t really need the whole catalogues. Ghost I do like and when I fist heard them after seeing photos and the album covers their sound was a big surprise and I the first comparison that came into my head was Alice Cooper , and as said nobody asks me to put something else on when I play them.
Pete Ice (d) T- is Forbidden 😊 and Simon drinking King Goblin from a skull...hilarious 😂.not heard of Sabaton so this episode is sure to be enlightening. Also want to check if you guys have or will cover Richard Thompson of Fairport convention (and Linda Thompson)...they together and Richard solo have immense an catalogue ? Probably in the prog seat ?
I've never seen Sabaton live, and I love them. So I think the dude's argument just falls flat for me. To me Sabaton is not a "fun" band, but serious to me as a war history enthusiast. And the music to me is highly memorable. Memorable hooks and stories, and sometimes riffs. So I basically disagree with everything in this video. The reason why I love Sabaton is because I love history, the music part is secondary for me to be honest. It's good, but it's nothing complex or super fancy or anything. If you don't have passion for history, I don't think you'll enjoy it the same.
Sabaton is a miracle that they have the quality of riffs and memorable choruses in a tier of other famous rock bands but you also get to learn something about history.
He's got a point though. The song writing (musically) is better than he's giving credit but the production does get in the way. It will be interesting to see how the new album turns out now Chris has writing credits on five songs. I would love to see what kind of album Sabaton would make if they went to a studio away from home with a producer who stands up to them and spent six months living and fighting as a band and everyone fully contributing to the songwriting.
Before enjoying this latest show I had never heard Sabaton, so I searched them out on RUclips (Wacken 2019) and have to say they sounded exactly as I expected them to. Very northern Europe, clearly hardworking but I didn't get it, but hey what do I know?
Sabaton and alestorm are great live and on record. Rather watch and listen to fun music than boringly over serious stuff that 'proper' metal fans like. Plus Sabaton videos are the best out there.
So strait to you tube to see sabaton live show.... O dear! Its a bit much, nightwish meets eurovison? 90 minutes of this is difficult to take, now it's taking stage show to the extreme! I'll take a listen to a studio album next and see where we end up 👆 good comments by the boys.
I love their early stuff. Their last two have been hit and miss. They tend to be leaning into the more symphonic, and synthesized direction. Losing a lot of the heaviness and driving drums, like on 'Firestorm', 'Napalm' and 'Shotgun'. I tend to be moving away from them the more they slowly shift there sound. I'll always have the earlier stuff though, and I'll continue to see them live as long as Ghost Division is opener.
I'd heard the name Sabaton but knew absolutely nothing about them. After watching this show, I checked out a few songs and a couple of live videos. I'd have to agree with Steven generally. Live, they look a lot of fun. I'll be humming that 'Higher' refrain from The Red Baron all day now. The studio tracks i listened to were really keyboard heavy and can't say any one left the same impression. But i will check out some more. I thought you were joking when you said they had a tank onstage. Another KISS comparison there as well. Oh, and what a choice of mixer Mr Reid, ginger beer is perfect with dark rum. Edit... 2 day later still humming that feckin tune 🤣🤣
My beer focus of late has been the Icelandic brewery Einstock. They have some tasty beers…particularly a nice Wee Heavy Scotch Ale, Doppelbock and Winter Ale 🍺
And I have all the Earbook editions of Sabaton believe it or not. I feel the same live great on record not the same. Unfortunately the next album will be war again. Fun fluff lol.
As a big military history buff, I like their lyrical content. However, as much as I like some power metal, I am not a fan of the keyboard driven variety of Sabaton. I also think Pete’s comparison to the Nightwish template is spot on.
I am very much into ancient and especially medieval warfare (my interest wanes with widespread use of firearms), so this band was a massive disappointment for me. The name and logo promised knights and swords, then bam, it's tanks and figter planes. I also think they are very wishy-washy about their main theme. You can't sing hymns about war all day without glorifying it to some degree. And is it really a bad thing to glorify risking one's life to defend his people and home? Does he also wear those camo pants and "badass" threadplate jacket to express how bad and uncool war is? Do they really believe people leave their shows educated and smarter? Again, it's all calculated. Call of Duty and Battlefield games are all the rage, but you gotta appease those pesky pacifists too. So why not sing for all those CoD kids while taking moral high ground of "don't censor history"?
Definitely have to agree with Steven this week, shocking I know! Sabaton are one of the best live bands I've seen, but their albums are just OK, not bad but not great either. Great video gents, as always.
I have only heard the recent song by Sabaton, I enjoyed it, but can't remember anything about it. Which proves Steven's point. But, a fun show. It's like having a few drinks with friends who have taken over the conversation and you know almost nothing about the topic. My drink of choice tonight is very local dark wheat beer., Thomas a Lilford's Gwenith Du Steven, nothing wrong with a bit of ginger beer in your rum.
I love Sabaton, imo, the reason they may get a pass is because of their war aggressive themes. No fantasy shit, lots of power, label them as you will. I love this band.
It looks like, for their last show in the US, they came up with a 27 song set in one day after Judas Priest bowed out when Richie Faulkner became ill. I don't care who you are, that's pretty bad ass.
I would have seen them with Priest but they postponed the show until March. I have no idea who is opening for Priest now, but those games they played with the line up make me feel they're not really into it. Edit: Just checked; it's actually Queensryche. Pretty solid.
Don't forget guys Sabaton drummer is ex Evergrey. Tom always makes me laugh when he says we are Evergrey from Gothenburg Sweden and we don't sing about tanks and dragons lol.
Fully agree Stephen the jokes are the same, the drinking a beer etc and every show starting with Ghost Division.. My gf lives in Germany 🇩🇪 and we have good friends who are mad Sabaton and Powerwolf fans we go but we know what to expect. Very clever marketing of course and Nuclear Blast have a cash cow eeek sorry
Hi, love your contributions to Pete his channel. Great that at least someone recognises that Sabaton is a good band. Joakim has such a powerfull voice!
After watch this I watched one of their shows. They don’t appear to really be playing half the time and not even trying to sing the chorus. They must be playing along with a recording
Agree Stephen Sabaton won't change Agree they shouldn't but it does become a little predictable. Another strange thing is unlike a lot of bands when interviewed they never mention what bands they listened to growing up and what influenced them.
Sabaton was supposed to be the opening act for Judas Priest here, which now has been rescheduled for April, and the opening act now is Queensryche. I'm kind of glad, because I had never heard of Sabaton, so I checked out some of their music on RUclips, and I was saying to myself, what in the hell is this? Every song sounds the same. The lyrics are ridiculous. To me, they are the metal equivalent of that Canadian band most of us love to hate, Nickelback, who do much the same thing. I don't like this band at all. Gojira is much more my speed these days.
@@TranquilityFireReid I can imagine, some are really nuts for Sabaton. Their lyrics are interesting to me, but I don't own their albums I will see them live someday, sounds like a fun show.
I strongly disagree with Steven here. I’m a big fan and I love all their albums. And I’ve never seen them live. And no, their not a comedy og circus act, they’re quite serious. Joakim is a great guy, and he and Pär are really invested in the lyrics and the music 🙂
Shocked to see you wasting time talking about this.... , sorry.... but looks, stageacting and for me the music, over the top ridiculous. I get when ppl who are into power metal dig the music... but man, everything else is made for 12 year old. Here its more the Mainstream audience the convenient metal listener the wacken ppl who are into this band. Thats what makes em successfull for sure, the Image and the simple kind of metal for everyone. Not the quality of their music... like babymetal for example. If ppl love em more power to them... but i cant stand everything they stand for. I wouldnt compare them to ghost, i can listen to ghost just for their music... i dont need that imagery at all... but i could never listen to sabaton.
Steve Bannon looks bad. Grolsch is not a German beer. In Germany mostly morons listen to Sabaton. In Germany we listen to Space Chaser. Have fun though.

A great fun show with all of you , this is not a band I have heard a lot of their albums .I have will check them out 🙂🎶
Thanks David. Let us know what you think.
@@TranquilityFireReid I am not sure if I would buy there albums .In there videos they sound good but when I listen to the songs then there's something missing for me,so I would buy any time soon
Saw these guys open for Hammerfall. Great gig!
I'm not a super-friendly with these so-called (newer) power metal bands, but I absoluty love finnish own Battle Beast, especially Noora Louhimo. What a amazing & powerful vocalist she is! And their new album is great IMO.
I am definitely going to check out Sabaton. They sound like a good fun band.
Last time I saw them in Frankfurt.
Support was Apocalyptica and Amaranthe
You make an interesting point Pete at 19:10 as Im one of those people. Most metal I listen to is proper heavy ie, death, black, doom, thrash and traditional. My reason for loving Sabaton is that it's metal that's not aggressive. It's music for when you want less aggression but not full on pop so to speak.
I never listened to a ton of Sabaton, but i do like the first album. Maybe someday ill catch up.
Greg "The Hammer" Valentine for the wrestling fans out there. Simon "The Judge" Bray Throw that hammer down! Great stuff!
Good show, thanks 👍
Pete Ice (d) T- is Forbidden 😊 and Simon drinking King Goblin from a skull...hilarious 😂.not heard of Sabaton so this episode is sure to be enlightening. Also want to check if you guys have or will cover Richard Thompson of Fairport convention (and Linda Thompson)...they together and Richard solo have immense an catalogue ? Probably in the prog seat ?
Sabaton, The Kings of Power Yoga Metal🤘😎🤘
I don't agree t dog, but I can certainly understand your point of view. Thanks for watching!
Another top class show from UK Connection. Very funny and informative only downside is I need to buy more records✌🏻
Thanks for watching. Enjoy emptying your wallet!
So strait to you tube to see sabaton live show.... O dear! Its a bit much, nightwish meets eurovison? 90 minutes of this is difficult to take, now it's taking stage show to the extreme! I'll take a listen to a studio album next and see where we end up 👆 good comments by the boys.
Love the band. Like their historical concepts. Their last album did lack something, though.
Anyone else noticed a similarity between the Sabaton logo and the Suzuki emblem?
I'll need to check them out Mike!
Their White Ale and Toasted Porter are both very fine.
Don't know if you guys have heard 40 to One misheard lyrics please check it out on RUclips
And I have all the Earbook editions of Sabaton believe it or not.
I feel the same live great on record not the same.
Unfortunately the next album will be war again.
Fun fluff lol.
I'm having some Duvel beer( Belgian strong blond) and I'm all for a Belgian strong blond. Steven may come from Forfar.
Is this the beer channel? Hahaha!
Sabaton is a good band, and they're from my neck of the woods, almost
Beer 🍺 of choice tonight guys for me Paulaner Weissbier yeah.
John is always with you Simon xx 😘
Indeed he is.
I wouldn’t triangulate Steven’s exact position, but we are around 10,000 miles apart, yet both remarkably close to Perth!! 🏴🇦🇺🤘🏻
Thanks Dai. I'm all about the spices!
I have a good friend in Germany who has seen Sabaton 90 times and Powerwolf 80 times .
I love Sabaton, imo, the reason they may get a pass is because of their war aggressive themes. No fantasy shit, lots of power, label them as you will. I love this band.
So would Steven suggest just investing in their Live albums ???
It looks like, for their last show in the US, they came up with a 27 song set in one day after Judas Priest bowed out when Richie Faulkner became ill. I don't care who you are, that's pretty bad ass.
I would have seen them with Priest but they postponed the show until March. I have no idea who is opening for Priest now, but those games they played with the line up make me feel they're not really into it.
Edit: Just checked; it's actually Queensryche. Pretty solid.
Grolsch is Dutch, not German. But as opposed to Heineken, it's drinkable. Cheers.
Correct! I misspoke...been drinking a lot of German beers lately and lumped this one in way them.
If you'd like to spice it up a bit, there's a German porter-like beer out there called Köstritzer. Pretty nice.
All very true Jonathan!
I am pretty neutral about Sabaton but gotta admit the "No Bullets Fly" animated video does make me tear up a little .
So how does this compare to a Rammstein show?
Sabaton rule !
Hi, love your contributions to Pete his channel. Great that at least someone recognises that Sabaton is a good band. Joakim has such a powerfull voice!
This is the first time I’ve felt that an SoT episode was way too long. The same points were made over and over again.
After watch this I watched one of their shows. They don’t appear to really be playing half the time and not even trying to sing the chorus. They must be playing along with a recording
Or a drinking horn guys
😄👍👍
The Noch ein Bier and the Swedish pagans constant oh oh oh oh etc can at times get a bit boring.
Accept billed below Sabaton??? WTF? 🙃
That was exactly my thought too, but the reaction Sabaton got compared to Accept proved the billing was correct.
@@TranquilityFireReid I can imagine, some are really nuts for Sabaton. Their lyrics are interesting to me, but I don't own their albums I will see them live someday, sounds like a fun show.
@@dtltmtgt It certainly is!
Simon the lead singer from TF must be hard to work with with.
Kicked out of TF joined Northtale kicked out of them after one album.
Some people just don't play well with others. TF appear to be coming to Manchester next year.
No offence to Simon but he appears as the strong silent type he needs to speak up more when defending bands. His input is always great though.
I strongly disagree with Steven here. I’m a big fan and I love all their albums. And I’ve never seen them live. And no, their not a comedy og circus act, they’re quite serious. Joakim is a great guy, and he and Pär are really invested in the lyrics and the music 🙂
And by the way, their live albums are awesome as well 😀
Couldn't even get one album pick from each? C'mon man!
Grolsch is Dutch tho, not German ;)
I hate Alestorm Stephen complete utter joke.
I completely agree!
Steve Bannon looks bad. Grolsch is not a German beer. In Germany mostly morons listen to Sabaton. In Germany we listen to Space Chaser. Have fun though.
It’s Not German...I misspoke!
