I’m surprised some people only heard about Sakura microns recently from TikTok. I always thought they were the most hyped fine liners in the art community. I don’t do use them for art but they’re great for journaling too
yeah they're like to fineliners what copics are to alcohol markers. the first brand you'd heard of.
It's so surprising!! I've known them since 2017!
Ikr, I've been using them for about 20yrs
I was excited to use them, but they haven't worked for me. I wanted to use them to detail my mixed media, but they don't work. I even bought another set just in case I had a dried out set. But nope. Idk what I'm doing wrong but I haven't had any luck with micron pigma pens.
She specifically said it’s the 003 Microns, the tiny ones.
ok i'm glad i'm not the only one who's flabbergasted that other artists didn't know about microns before tiktok
The sakura microns are great but personally they didnt last very long, and this is coming from someone who treats their supplies VERY well. They're great while they last but keep in mind that they're quite sensitive, don't try to layer them on top of other media like paint (dry obviously) or prismacolors.
Same here
Yep. I was so disappointed years ago, when I still did mostly traditional art, how easily they seemed to start bleeding when I used markers. Before that, I had always seen people use them like so (sketch, lineart, colour) so I wasn't expecting what happened to happen. Nowadays I tend to use mostly other pens for lineart, not sure about the brand but I they're nothing famous or too expensive and I just buy them from my country's book store chain (idk how common it is to sell art/office supplies in bookstores but they do here). They dry quicker, bleed way less, and last longer. I rarely use the sakura microns I have now 😅
So true, Do you have any suggestion?
@@heloneidaheloneida Tbh I don't do line art too much anymore but I did use a classic dip pen for awhile and that was pretty good, the line art was super bright and you can really control the weight of each stroke. If that's not your thing I used to use sharpies specifically the really really itty bitty ones and those worked as well, they're just not as vibrant.
How can someone NOT know about the micron markers!?! I've been using them for so long!!
I'm poor 🥴
@@miamor4058 they aren't even expensive lmao
@@nolion but I can't buy. Where do I buy them. I live in Jamaica Americn dollars is expensive out hear 🥴
Exactly there kinda common xD

Use a silicone face scrubber at the bottom of a mason jar to clean your brushes
good hack or you could use similar makeup brush cleaning pads made of silicone
😊
They also have big ones for your dishes and body!
Dried glue in a cup works too I think
You can also drip hot glue into the bottom of a cup and use that as a texture to clean your brushes… even cheaper
I used to think that rotrings were the worst because I had an uncle that went to college for drafting and architecture. He used those rotring isograph pens religiously for everything he ever did, so he had a junk box full of them. When I was around 10 or 12 I took a handful of those junk pens thinking I could be a great artist if I had these fancy sounding pens.
Of course they were empty, jammed, dry, or broken in some way since they came from a junk box. Rather than connecting the dots, I just assumed that all technical pens were terrible for years. I eventually bought one on accident while I was getting fineliners and decided I wasn't going to waste it so I put it in my pocket journal. The instant I used it, I set it with my main art supplies and have loved them ever since.
I use Microns a lot. Started using them far before tiktok. They’re some of my favorite fineliners simply for their range in sizes for the type of pen they are. I’d say that they’re worth the price, yet I’m aware of tiktok’s weird obsession with some of the most expensive art supplies on the market (Caran d’Ache pencils, Copic markers, Winsor and Newton paint, etc). I’m sure that there’s a cheaper alternative that produces the same effect!
For me, I'm in the Uk so windsor and newton even the professional gouache that I use isnt stupidly expensive, but I totally agree, tik tok has this habbit of pushing either really really good and expensive art supplies or really bad ones. like the paint puck thing for example, I cannot get that in the Uk without paying a lot and i mean a lot of money.
@@jinx5337 Interesting. Neat to see that W&N stuff isn’t expensive everywhere, as someone who uses their watercolors. What would be an example of a bad art product that tiktok has pushed?
Prismacolor fineliners are also really good and reliable. While my microns may dry up in a year or two, I've had some of my Prisma color pens for longer.
Microns are really reliable. And with watercolor, honestly the paint matters, but I'd say what matters more (and what is most expensive) is the paper. I just started buying quality paper and I love it. I have some of the shittiest watercolor paper money can buy and In stuck with it by accident. I normally get Canson because it's great and affordable. Got a cheaper brand recently and I immensely regret. Weirdly same brand does make ok marker paper, but I don't use markers too much
fuck me running it is 40 dollars for a travel pallet here in Canada
I didn't even know they are now tiktok famous. No wonder my local art store suddenly keeps running out of them...

I’m surprised you just found the micron pens! They’ve been around for a while! I remember my papa using them when he used to tattoo
You can make cold press ground, too - by mixing gesso and modeling paste! It’s worth it to buy the mixed ground but as long as you measure & get the proportions right mixing it yourself is awesome too!
Microns got popular on tiktok?
Tf was I using 10 years ago then? 😂😂😂
But glad to see little ones find good supplies, microns were my treasure before digital art.
Yeah ikr? Tiktok my ass... forget that trash platform, micron pens, winsor and newton watercolors, prismacolor pencils, copics are the holy grail of artsupplies since forever lol
They also are stupidly expensive but they are good so nevermind the price
Ah and posca
For tablet its like saying wacom is new-
microns came way before tiktok idk how she didnt know them im backing that as a 14 year old lmao ive known microns since i was 8

I thought that was funny too I was using them as a teen 20+ years ago
Those extremely thin fineliners used to be sold in specialist shops for doing blueprints with precise details. The official standards for official blueprints require specific line widths for specific things, and draftsmen like to use sizes that scale to the next size when photocopying up or down 1 paper size.
Interesting, thanks!
that's cool! i didn't know that.
yup, that's why it's called technical pens for technical drawing or at least for staedtler and rotring.
"They're named after ur dad's pp"
Saw a DIY art hack with the cold press ground... they painted a light shade and did an amazing watercolour drip style on it. It was gorgeous
The Cold Ground is also nice to mix into paint to give added texture to your pieces where needed 👌🏼
The Paint Puck is actually pretty freakin' cool-
Need to get one to try-
Pt.2 Please

I got one a few days ago from a white elephant party, then I saw this haha
you dont want to clean your brushes that way it damages the bristles quick.
I got my Microns YEARS ago as a Christmas present in highschool. I can further back up the hype for them! They're seriously amazing and I don't think I could ever use anything else after these babies 😭💖
NOTE : those pens are amazing for painting pupils on the eyes of warhammer, but for a 1000 point army get at least 3 pens the same size
Microns have been the backbone of the yt art community for years. I remember being so proud of the pack I got for Christmas I used my gray bedsheets as a background and posted an attempt at a professional-looking picture to show them off
For some reason my brain went "Oh my gosh the best art supply ever," and immediately focused on the "Wookie cup"
Yeeeeees!
Same
The thing about those microns is you really want to be careful to not press down on them. You need a very light hand (hard for me, I have a very heavy hand when I draw ) and you're going to need a few of them to finish one larger piece. I love them, they are fun to use, but I wanted to put that out there for people who have never used them.
I switched to reusable copic just because you can change the nibs before the ink runs out. With those I don't think you can replace the nibs and a lot of the time they will wear down before the ink runs out.
Ooh, thank you for that last recommendation!! I'm also a big heavy-handed, but I tend to be precious w/ those pens. But it's awesome to know there's a refillable option!
@@ZijnShayatanica I’m glad I could help someone! The initial price for the refillable copic is a bit more expensive, but not unreasonably so. After you get it the nib price comes out to about the same as you would spend on the disposable microns…I think actually even less expensive after a while, because once a nib is ruined on a whole pen you can’t use it even if the ink is still good, and you can’t even take the ink cartridge out to use in another pen!
Happy arting!
If you want the brush cleaner, you can cut up a sponge and put at the bottom of the cup. It’ll work just fine.
Side note: the Sakura fine liners dry out very easily if your not careful. I press down a bit hard while lining and it always seemed to dry out quicker rather than when I didn’t. There’s also no way of preventing bleed when working with watercolor around it- if your looking for a cheap alternative I’d also suggest
“2 pack s-gel 0.7 fine tip sharpie pens no bleed ($5-3)”
They are what works best for me, and what I often use in my videos.
I think the cold press grounds just changed my life! I’ve always seen it in the store but never thought to look it up 😮
wouldn't it be just as expensive as paper? it would be interesting to convert random objects into watercolour canvas, but would it need primer?
@@mothratemporalradio517 the cold press grounds is essentially the primer, but when it comes to the price, it just depends on what paper you get, and what you’ll use it for.
Me for example, while the grounds may be the same price as the paper I use, I use watercolour for my backgrounds only, and work with pencils and paint everywhere else, so it would be helpful to have just that back area be for watercolour than to change the medium of what I’m working on.
@@baisale36 so for multimedia pieces where watercolour paper won't work aasd well for other mediums or be more expensive overall. Right! Thanks for explaining that, i like random different ways of creating things but haven't been able to make a mess with art materials for a long while. Hadn't thought about that angle. It would be amazing if you could straight up paint with watercolours onto solid furniture although I can't see that working. Cheers!
I just came up with a recipe for watercolor ground. It's just acrylic gesso with baking soda. It works really well.
THAT FIRST ITEM HAS MADE ME QUESTION MY LIFES DECISIONS THANKYOU

The first one is an actual live saving painting and I use the drying rack to hold my brushes regularly
Microns are not just small (they come in a variety of sizes) but they are incredibly high quality and super durable. There’s a reason they’re the standard for a LOT of professional artists
My micron fineliner dried out after like two weeks😭
Same 🥲
Bought mine a year ago and it's still working
@Eva shah its was closed
Bruh I’ve had mine (that I stole from my student shop when I was in college) from like 2 years ago… I don’t use them too often but now I use them to write in my notebook and play sudoku. They’re still very not dry lol
This happened to me too, I had the .05 and the cap was on all the way, the tip broke and it dried out, but it was pretty cool when it did work
That brush cleaner/holder/palette thing is MAGIC!!! Where did you get it????
It’s called a Paint Puck.
The micron markers are great, we use them all the time for drawings in my architecture class
_holy shit, i need all of these right now_
Can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEEEE compare all the different water color grounds? I know Daniel Smith and I think... Maybe Paul Ruebens has one too.. idk I am amazed by this stuff..
probably similar to other types of non-art paint primer on some level? eg Zinsser
Yess i love micron pens!
I bought mine before tiktok, but my classmates stole them all sadly :(
But you can also get them from Michaels craft supplies, i beleive they are all over the place
Our classmates steal many things from us. i am in 8th grade now now they don't steal anything now after lockdown and i stole teacher pen when I was in 3 grade
VERY unrelated but you just gave me anger flashbacks to a time in 1st grade when someone stole my charizard ex pokémon card. still not over that.

I recommend the micron fineliners so much they are amazing! I use them and they work really well with watercolours because they don't spread like some other fineliners you can find them in many sizes along with a brush pen and I always get them because of the quality and affordability
bro those fine liners are so helpful i own so many lol
That last one is amazing I’m getting some now!!
The paint pick can also be bought as a suction cup that attaches to the bottom of your cup, which is nice if you're like me and have favorites.
it's hideous but it's actually an innovative looking design. i love gadgets but a lot of them don't work too well
I personally prefer the Faber castell version I believe they are called PITT. Unlike everyone else, my first inking pens were Faber castell and they lasted years. They were also water resistant. They didnt have as small of tips but I was able to achieve different line weights with just one pen so the XS pen could still make as fine lines as my micron .005
I love how she puts her time and effort into her RUclips videos I love you
One thing I cannot live without is the Master’s Brush Cleaner and Preserver. It cleans my oil and gouache brushes beautifully. I even resurrected a few old brushes I thought were goners.
yes!!!! brush care needs to be hyped up more because its such a game changer!
As an art student I’m so glad I found this video! Thank you!
The cold press grounds sounds amazing 😍
I absolutely LOVE them 🤩
I live by the micro-lines. I use them for all of my hatching and shading, since I mainly use ink anyways.
oh wow! I’ll definitely try those😁
I ink with the 0.05 and 0.1 ALL the time. I bought the 0.03 purely for my mini sketchbook pieces hehe
first time I saw a verified creator have zero likes on a comment I swear
The star wars mug at the begin>>
I have the Micron pens! They're absolutely amazing now I must get the other two gadgets
part 2 please..😊💜
Just a tip for anyone interested in the micron pens: they are great... Until they break, and they break fast. If you tend to be forceful when writing/drawing, I would seriously reconsider. They are great while they work though
First vid I ever saw from Rae Shorts, I love her educational self and endless motivation a ton already! Keep up the incredible things you do!~ ✨
Thanks for the info; please 2nd part, Happy Holidays.
"Micron liners"
oh boy do i love me micron liners! i'm so grateful they dry out after a single use!
Sounds like a you problem, no offense, never had a single problem with mine drying out. And I've had mine for a couple years now.
That's suspicious, I have cheaper, less quality fineliners and they had been going strong for almost a year, supposing you didn't left them open for a long time then it's possible the store where you bought them sold you used or almost dry pens
loads of other people made similar comments - i wouldn't know.. but i doubt the just you
It sucks that lots of people have that experience!! For that reason, I was kind of hesitant to buy them, but I have found they keep just fine. I've found storing them horizontally is the recommendation. I also keep them in a plastic bag when I'm not using them, hoping that will prevent air from drying them out? IDK if it's necessary, but it makes me feel better! Lmao
My parents got me a paint puck for my birthday. I fricking love it! It made me love painting again and also love the Chewy mug
Yesss! Micron pens for the win! My Most Favorite Pens ever! I was introduced to them by an artist friend way back in the early 2000's. I have all the colors and wish that they made more of them in the teensy tip. I've worn out so many of those 005 doing teensy little details on ACEOs. :)
Kneaded erasers are another awesome tool, no more eraser crumbles on your art, and they are fun to squish.
I didn't know about the watercolor ground, that is pretty cool. I worked at an art store years ago, I miss seeing the cool products that come out.
All of these things have been around for a while. It's fun to watch this new generation discover will most of us have been using for years.
The first one is actually really useful especially for water colors
I actually been using those fine liners for several years I actually thought most artists use them had no idea that it wasn’t as common as I believed.
YES PIGMA MICRON HAS BEEN MY LINER OF CHOICE FOR FOREVER
That ground is awesome! So is the water tank. Thank You!
We need to have part two now 🥺🥺🥺
LOVE that microns are also waterproof!
Woah, so cool. 💖
That last one is amazing!
0.3mm mechanical pencils will always be my one beloved art supply
All of this stuff especially the micro pens have been around before you were born. When you are in college doing professional art, it's mandatory to have.
I love that first one! Genius!
The cold press ground is WHAT I NEED TBH.
the cold press ground has so many possibilities 😮
That cold press sounds amazing for priming canvas for spray painting
That last one is so cool though!
that mug
IM IN LOVE WITH IT
Part 2 would be great, please. Thanks for all you do!
Just a note on the micron fineliners, especially the 005 ones, it’s quite easy for the nib to be pressed in or damaged. You just have to be delicate with them. If you do any sort of stippling or drawing technique that may damage the nib easily, the copic multi liner SP pens have replaceable nibs and ink. It’s a bit more of an upright cost but it stops you wasting a good micron pen when you’ve only had it 3 weeks (speaking from experience..)
Loving the Chewbacca mug! Artist +Star Wars fan! Wooooo🎉🎉🎉
I can vouch for Sakura Pigma Micron Fineliners. One of the best art supplies I've ever bought. It's both a blessing and a curse because I want to use them all the time, even when I really shouldn't LOL.
Loving these products, they're so practical!
The last one is amazing 🤩
I use that paint water cup. I got it to Christmas and it works super well! Highly recommend it!
That cold press ground looks great
Yes Micron pens! I discovered how cool they were by getting one on sale at a bookstore for writing, then realizing I found my dream pen for writing small but legibly
It's the art equivalent of the portal surface material. I love it.
Gurl fr try the 0.1 and 0.05 of the microns. So much detail I could not even begin to describe. Amazing for mini doodles.
That cold press stuff sounds nutty
The first one would be sooo good for cleaning makeup brushes!!
I got the first one for either my birthday or Christmas when I was like 8. Still probably my favorite and most useful art thing!
The grounds is a game changer!!
I have those pens! They are actually rather good quality, I recomend.
GET THIS GIRL TO ONE MILLION LIKES
I definitely need a part 2!
For anyone whose like me and enjoys drawing incredibly tiny details, Microns are amazing, but copic is the only fineliner I know that has a true 0.03. I like to use both since copic is a little more expensive than micron, but nothing beats copic's 0.03.
That paint water tank thing is literally perfect if you work with kids
You'd probably have to clean up spilt water but holy shit it would help with messes and stuff
Everyone is focused on the art supplies but I just want that chewbacca mug🤩
Ive been using micros since before TikTok existed and have always seen everyone else use them for art so idk why anyone would think TikTok made them popular, they were already popular
I used to be a prolific SH. My right thigh has scars that finally aren't raised and purple after almost 10 years! 8 years ago I told an ex when the day came that I could, I'd love to cover the scars with something beautiful and meaningful because I'm still alive. He lectured me on needing to love myself and my body. What he ignored was all the times i would cry because i felt like i was reliving my skin being ripped anytime i saw them. They were a reminder of a bad time in my life where I wanted to end it. I felt the burning sensation on my skin as if i had just harmed myself. Its probably just something you never forget. I love myself and my body more than i did then but im still getting that tattoo. I want to see something beautiful when i look down. I want a reminder that i survived through hard times and ended up with something beautiful, a full happy life. I cant wait to get something beautiful
I’ve learned with the pens you can make trees by using the finest one 005 as the out side of it and gently shake your hand and once you do that color it in with the thicker pens
I’ve had those micron pens for YEARS
that first one looks cheaply made but has so many fantastic functions!!!
Only time I've ever agreed with TikTok ! Have that water cup in purple💜
