  • Joshua Schroeder, Official Institute (OI) chairman of the board, hosts the March meeting, Thursday, March 14, 2024 with many plays being discussed, all part of the girls or boys IHSA 4A championship games of 2024.
As always OI conducts these meetings every month and do so with full intent of aiding basketball officials, new and veteran alike, with instruction on how to see and rule on a variety of plays. The purpose of this instruction is for everyone to improve our skill of officiating and to do it together. OI believes watching and discussing videos in a group setting like this because it increases retention of instruction and reinforces rule knowledge by bouncing ideas around with fellow officials. Asking questions while analyzing video is a valuable learning tool and by giving repetitive looks at the same play increases retention of rules and philosophies of rules. All videos shown are actual high school basketball videos.
This online meeting includes 6 video clips from the 2024 IHSA 4A girls championship game and ???? video clips 2024 4A boys championship game.
    0:00 - Intro
0:48 - Dribbling player is closely guarded and a violation is called by the official. Why was this incorrect?
6:30 - Possible leg kick out on this three point shot attempt. Or was it a hit on the arm? Watch and see.
10:07 - Lead rotates over unnecessarily running across. What else could we say about this play?
15:59 - Dribbler tries to penetrate the defense at the top of the arc with a blocking foul called by the Center official. Was it?
20:39 - Last minute of game scenario. Throw-in in the front court. Foul is called but where did it come from? Let's discuss this play.
31:44 - Out of bounds play with 6.1 seconds on the clock. Watch to see what happens.
34:48 - Foul in the post by the recently rotated Lead. Can we pass on this?
37:14 - Lots of contact with no whistles. Does this amount of physicality consistent with the first video we saw?
39:03 - Drive to the basket from one end to the other stopped by a whistle for a hand check. Good call or no?
43:52 - Another 3 point shot attempt with a leg kick out by the shooter and a foul called by the official.
45:42 - Collision at the division line and the Center official was in the perfect spot to see exactly what happened.
47:35 - A big mess with a loose ball that can't seem to find a player to possess is ultimately stopped by a foul call. If we watch the play develop, maybe no whistle on this play is better.
51:55 - Big dunk with a hanging player. Should this be a technical foul?
53:19 - Drive to the basket, whistle blown for a foul and ruled not shooting. But was he shooting or no?
57:42 - Player control foul called. But did the defender have a legal guarding position?
1:00:04 - One minute to go in the game with a foul on a desperation foul. Should this be an intentional foul?
1:06:57 - Meeting Schedule for the next meeting.
Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right.

Another great video. Thank you! However, I was a little disappointed you didn't call Scott out for falling asleep with his camera on there at the end. ;) I get it. It's been a long season. We're all beat!

At 7:04-7:05 the calling official gives an illegal use of hands preliminary ... quick signal but clear. The foul was for the contact to the hand.

Pet peeve: While describing a couple plays you said "he's over his back," as if it violates a rule.
When the offensive player drove the length of the floor and ended with an open layup (39:05), the defensive player touched the offensive player with his right arm for less than a half second. Why are we calling a defensive foul here when the defensive player's actions did not seem to affect the offensive player's movement?

Play 2: She's been learning from LeBron. In seriousness, it looks likek the two players high fived after the ball was clearly away. I would think THAT part should just be ignored. The leg kick could be ruled an offensive foul, although that would be HOTLY contested. :)

5 sec count when dribbling eliminated this year in MN. Love it...less whistles in the game.

I have intimate knowledge that those representing the IHSA supported the nocall on the screen at the end of the girls game. 😃
My personal opinion, when a team executes that many facets of a throw-in play correctly, as was done here, you reward them by letting them finish the play. We would penalize that team by putting a whistle on the play.

In NFHS there is no gather step. It's one of the major differences it has between other levels.

@OfficialsInstitute you're welcome. I appreciate your content and enjoy watching. That one time the analysis was soooooo ticky tack and it happened in a split second 99% of us would have never caught the loss of control of the ball.
