please check the thick negative wire connected between engine and car body if it's teared needs to be changed .
if the battery is new and always weak and alternator ok then this wire is the cause .
alternator should power the engine without a battery and u can turn on headlights.
charging voltage from 13.6 to 14v
measure the drop voltage between battery negative terminal and engine body when charging you should see
    a drop voltage 10mv .
    jump starting batteries sucks
better solution a super capacitor and a manual motor with lever turn fast until cap fully charged and jump start the car .
I own golf mk2 1986 and it's working perfectly waiting for spring to do the standard checking routines and stuff to change (distributor cap, spark plugs ,alternator belt ....)
life with these cars is just great it never fails me 👋👋👋

It died when you disconnected the negative jump lead. Could you have a bad earth? Have you tried putting a jump lead on the block to the negative on your new battery to test?

For anyone having this issue with a 16v engine
YOU CAN swap out the INTERIOR of the alternator from one with the other variant of brackets
Yes, its a hassle but you will save ALOT of money on it

Sounds like a bad ground or bad connections of the positive wires. Those wires are easily corroded, it will solve a bit.
But i had e few golf mk2 diesels and now 2 petrol a 3 of them had the same problem that the battery is not charging before you rev it up. But how much you showed in the video that's sounds not normal, and with me the battery light is also always going on.
But you have 3 wires going to the alternator, W connection is for the rev counter.
The thick wire is obviously the positive
And the other one is for the battery light? (Correct me if i am wrong.)

you have a problem with either the clocks or the U1 and U2 plugs from fusebox to dash clocks, when you were banging the dash @1:16 the rev counter was going on and off again

I immediately thought solanoid, but I'm in not a mechanic, but proven pretty handy with electrics in the past

Although, as soon as you take the jump leads off car and it cuts out its usually the battery, but no doubt you've checked that

To jump start a car with a completely dead battery you need to use the ”manual override function”. The jump pack needs to be disconnected from the battery. Press and hold the ”red exclamation mark” button for 3 seconds. Connect to the car battery and start the car.

You can’t see it in the edit but that’s what I did that caused the lights to flash. The cat cranked slowly but still no luck

    Hi Tim!
i thought i'd answer to one of your more recent video's now, but this comment belongs under your Mk2 Swapping video. I have a mk2 golf with 1.3 carb engine and it's a real bugger. not really worth investing time and money in the thing and i'd like to swap an engine in for as cheap and effortless as possible. You said in the video a mk3.5 golf cabrio with 2.0 agg or similar is basically bolt-in. How bolt in / plug&play is that? If i have both cars next to eachother would it already be workable or do i need additional parts that you know of.. Im in doubt since it would be one of many projects that i have but I kinda don't want to let the golf go, although I don't like the 1.3 engine. So a quick and cheap car to make the golf quicker and reliable... i'd be glad ;)

Hi! If you have a 90’s spec car then the wiring is very plug and play as 90’s spec MK2’s and mk3/3.5’s also use ce2 diesel boxes so all the plugs go straight in the mk2 fuse box. You’ll need to do something about the immobiliser. If your car has a ce1 early fuse box then you’ll have to do some work joining the looms but there’s guides online on how to do that too. Good luck 👍🏻

@@BarnClubCars so you say just the wiring would be the challenge (but probably not since it's a 91')? no mechanical modifications or steering/suspension etc? Thanks for your response!!

Hi, did you fix the problem?

Yes it turned out it was faulty cluster along with a faulty interior light switch draining the battery. We fixed it in the next video.

Yes mate, that’s what Sam was probing while I was in the car. Thinking it could be a short somewhere between the alternator and the clocks. New multi meter is here now so back up on Sunday to try again 👍🏻
