- “Citizen Gane” chronicles the life of legendary Australian Graffiti Writer Gane 2, who back in the early 1980’s at age 12, was one of the very first generation writers to play a significant role in developing the Graffiti and hip hop scene in Australia. His influence was felt for decades after, until his passing in October 2022.
He first came to the attention of the Australian public back in 1985 when, aged 15, he was featured on the popular television program 60 Minutes. Overnight, he was a graffiti and pop culture sensation. Reviled by the general public but revered and admired amongst his peers, it earned him the highest honour of “King” status. The King of Sydney.
“Citizen Gane” is an entertaining story full of colour and larger than life characters. Gane tells his life story in his own words, accompanied by more than two dozen interviews from other graffiti writers, family and friends. All original music has been composed by Def Wish Cast. The film premiered at Dendy Cinemas in Newtown, Sydney, to a sold out audience.
Director, Producer and Editor Jay Richards has recently won a number of International Film Festival Awards for his last film, a thriller called “Resolve”, including Best Short Film and Best Director at the Cannes Awards, Paris Cinefest, and the Singapore World Film Carnival.

This was legendary!
As a kid in the early 80s you couldn't get a train without seeing a Gane tag, businessmen in suits would be spewing getting up with a reverse Gane tag on their ass cause his tags were so fresh or looking out the window you wouldn't wait long to see a Gane piece.

RIP GANE 2 I’ve known Gane for 37 years we painted trains for 20+ years when no one else was round because of myself and Gane 2 with Fear 1 RBS we took over Sydney because of us they put cameras on train stations was the bombed so hard no one else could ever achieve to this day or copy You can’t go back in history historical history made us Kingz forever I can say a lot about this documentary but I show my respect to the dead and nothing changes in life and death no matter the consequences untouchable ruthless treacherous styles were achieved on unstoppable Real hard-core Graffiti partner he’ll be sadly missed I’m suffering a lot taking medication for my heart finding out after his passing I had to ring the ambulance and I had a mild heart attack I nearly died because I lost my best friend life hard every single day I think RIP GANE TWO PIC KINGZ ONLY!!! The night that I spoke to him I was the last person to speak to him before he rang ambulance and the next day he died at 5 am that same day I went to the valley at Saint Peters home of Dead soldiers I done a rest in peace Gane two he’s on the Red Rattler ghost train that runs through city circle and continue to run day and night Night and day with all the brothers and sisters that are passed away having the time of his life much love you’ll never be forgotten God bless you brother save some trains for the Old school new school original pioneer The same as Gane I haven’t got many more years left I don’t think I’ll make it to Heaven I’ve been too ruthless but only God can Judge me as everyone speaks highly of respecting the dead And at the end that’s what it all comes down to Amen to that

Great video.. Sydney has such a rich graff history and particularly before the internet you never had to go far to find inspiration.. Some of the first hard copy photos I was exposed to featured the likes of Gane and Skae and I still think about those early days when everything is new and exciting.. his legacy will live on and may he rest in paradise.

GANE" was a citizen of Sydney but he got my respect, my condolences and He is a King in his own right. From this documentary he was well respected, loved and though i didn't know him he represented the graff game and kept it 💯. His friends considered him a King and he earned it..He went with his heart and his life was tough but he held his own and fought to the end. He went quietly but he made noise R.I.P. GANE ....🕯️.... NYC Bronx Love to a Graff Legend from across the seas. The Graff out there by all these legends is 💯 Real Graff Art...They have Style.

A really well done piece (pardon the pun). It's always nice to see the very human story behind the tag. I'm not a writer but have always been interested in graff and its subculture. 'GANE' and 'RIME' were some of the earliest tags/throwies I can recall, travelling into the city on the 'blue line' as a little kid in the mid 90s. My condolences to all that knew Gane. One thing that I've always wondered that the doco didn't go into: why is he known as 'Gane2' rather than the usual 'Gane1'- was there a writer by 'Gane' before him? Thanks.
He originally wrote GAIN2000, he later changed it to GANE2.

If he was given 12 mths to live, the tumour was probably too large to remove as sad as it is to say. He probably also had cirrhosis and fibrosis and removal of a large tumour might have left him with insufficient working liver. U have to catch liver cancer early bc some of those tumours can be really aggressive. Also to get on the transplant list u have to have numerous tests, u need family support, no alcohol or other drugs and u have to give up smoking.
