  • Many residents of Florida are only here for a part of the year. Sometimes called snowbirds, these seasonal residents are sometimes criticized by year-round residents for adding to traffic problems and crowding the golf courses and other activities.
    In today's episode. Jerry and Linda talk with two seasonal homeowners. Watch as the Newcomers discuss issues and experiences of "Snowbirds" in The Villages.
    The channel is more than just The Villages. It features episodes designed to inspire retirees to make the most of their golden years. Kayaking, hiking, golfing, music, travel and more is featured.

    Seems like some people had an interest in knowing why we moved so quickly after purchasing a home in The Villages... thought it would be appropriate to add this as a separate comment (I had responded to the question from an individual below). Response:
    When we started out before our first visit... we looked each other directly in the face and said "We will NOT purchase a house in The Villages"... and we quickly DID. When we bought that house, we were told that Villagers moved, within The Villages, an average of 2.5 to 3 times... We looked each other directly in the face and said "We will not be one of those people who buy multiple houses in The Villages... this is our first and last house here"... Then we quickly DID just that. In our minds, it just "happened"... we just decided: that we needed more space/bathrooms for guests, have our own pool (without having to wait for it to be built behind our first house) and we became willing to pay for a home with a "view".
    AND... we're putting it in writing right here... "This is our last house purchase in The Villages!"

    It was a very hard decision to move to the Villages full time...We had to say goodbye to all our family and friends.. my husband said to me this is not a dress rehearsal it's our retirement. Do we want to be a snowbird at our age? The answer is no. Our family visits us at The Villages they love it.... We miss everybody, but I don't want to go back and forth all the time... You had a very nice couple on your show. Thank you so much..

    Great video to hear how snowbirds do it. I personally will never buy a house with a pool again. It sits there most of the year, but requires constant oversight and maintenance. I would much rather have a community pool (club house) and leave the constant upkeep to someone else, and enjoy a garden where I can grow veg, and some roses. Love your channel. I'm from Ireland and can only stay 6 months so really need to know if it's possible or affordable. Everything for snowbirds is doubled almost with 2 homes 2 cars etc, I have been visiting at least once a year for 23 years in different parts of USA. Our exchange rate is terrible so prices are way up. Car insurance if I buy a cheap car is an unknown as rental excessive now. We love all the people we meet and love your country so hope the dream becomes real.

    Please, forgive my misunderstanding, but why so many complains about “snow-birds”? If every resident lives in the Villages 24/7 then roads, restaurants, golf etc will be busy all the time. These people pay same amount of money to use amenities. I don’t see anyone complains about that?! 🤷‍♀️

    Excellent video! I am a “ snow bird “ and all the points you touched on are so important to consider before buying a home. The pros and cons were spot on. The comment your guest made on moving into an established neighborhood vs a new neighborhood is very true. We bought in December last year in St. James, and everyone knows one another and not you. This has also been difficult with COVID as well.
    I am not offended by the term snowbird because I count my blessings to be able to enjoy the winters here and the summers at our camp on a lake. Have a house on and lake in the summer and your kids come to visit!🙂😉

    This sounds like way too much stuff to do especially as we age...who needs to be constantly maintaining things? Here is my model: Rent a Nice Apartment in my base city, which is Phoenix. For the months of June, July and August, rent a home in mountain country, somewhere like Colorado Springs. It is expensive for those 'extra, high cost 3 months', but no worries, no responsibilities, and very EZ to do on Airbnb or Vrbo. In this manner, I could go to many mountain towns, see the western part of the nation for the summer months. I guess you can call me a sunbird.

    Hi guys. You know maybe it's just the way my mind works but I wouldn't see it as the roads and golf courses being busier because
    of snow birds. I would think of it as it's not as crowded when they are gone. if they were just normal residents they would always be there and it would be more crowded all the time. So I think it's a good thing to have people be snow birds. Just Bobby's opinion. love you guys I enjoyed this video a lot.

    Very interesting video! It’s good to hear about the experiences of your snow-birding guests that you interviewed! We thought long and hard about being snowbirds, but most people after several years get tired of maintaining two homes over a thousand miles apart from each other.
    We decided to sell our home up north to an in law and setup a bedroom in our former home up north, and buy a home in Florida. That way we could have a place to stay up north, without having to own and maintain two homes.
    We thought about living in the Villages, but decided that it wasn’t the right fit for us. But we do understand why you love living in the villages.
    We chose to buy a property in the Florida Suncoast area.
    It’s been pretty cool lately. Maybe you could make a video about the short 1 to 3 day cold snaps in Florida. You’re temperatures are a little colder in central Florida than the Suncoast area. Maybe you’ve gotten close to freezing lately.

    Great informative vlog. Is there seasonal rentals available in The Villages? (for instance, say Jan,Feb,March)

    • @wolfwroses
      @wolfwroses 3 года назад +1

      General thinking is... the longer the term, the easier to get a rental... That's why we couldn't get the two weeks we originally wanted... home owners seem to prefer to have longer term rentals. Obviously, winter months are more pricey than summer... and six months would be easier to find than three (our guess).

    As always another great video. Very informative. One nit, I realize monetizing your videos is important and the reason you do this, but the numbers and frequency of commercials we have to view is getting tedious. Thanks Tom

    • @JERRYANDLINDA
      @JERRYANDLINDA  3 года назад

      Yes, like we have told a handful or so folks with the same comment, we have no control whatsoever over the number of ads, the length of the ads, the subject of the ads etc. I do know that if we are to continue to put out 2 or 3 videos each week it takes money. We don't like the fact that you are disrupted so many times during the video, but it allows us to pay admissions, buy equipment, gas etc. Thank you so much for watching.

    Just had a thought Jerry... your title may make viewers think that we were going to "tell all" about the rumored... you know?... the "things" about The Villages? All the "swinging" that folks have heard about, and often ask us about? To answer that question... we have NOT encountered that crowd... maybe we're hanging with the wrong (right?) crowd?

    I have watched all of The Villages Newcomers’ videos and its quite obvious that there is not much diversity in The Villages. I would be interested in an in-depth interview with people of color who do live in The Villages to get an idea of their life experiences in The Villages.

    • @JERRYANDLINDA
      @JERRYANDLINDA  3 года назад +4

      Good idea, so would we. We have invited several friends to be intervied, and they have agreed, but covid worries may have it on hold. Stay tuned.

    • @maryannearchibald3484

      Race is not the only kind of "diversity". There is a great deal of diversity among the residents , even with their similarities. Our experience has found us chatting and golfing with folks from all over, with differing experiences and backgrounds and ideas. That kind of diversity makes for an interesting place and challenging, interesting conversations.

    Interesting video regarding 'snowbirds' and ant bias. I assume if a snowbird is owns a home they pay property taxes, for the full year. Yet they are using services for only a part year. The net effect is that they are subsidizing the fulltime residents, who are getting the benefit of 100% of the services. Nothing wrong with that as long as if you are a fulltimer you realize other folks are subsidizing you. Some places they call that 'welfare' but its just the price of being a snowbird in Florida. Pay your share, and a little more for others.

      The Liofts of Brownwood opened in July. You could call The Villages sales office about those. The Villages is supposed to be building apartments where Hacienda Hills County Club used to be. I don't know when those will be available. I would guess at least a year from now.
