Very well said. Thank you. I am a newly ordained Baptist minister and I wear a collar when going out witnessing in public settings, when visiting institutions, and when traveling, so that I am identified as one who has been called and set apart to serve in this special capacity.
I am a Baptist Minister, should I wear a Clerical Collar? I have been thinking about it, especially since I do most of my work outside of the walls of the Church. Baptists normally look down upon such things, claiming that they are Catholic. I enjoyed your video, and I do agree that Pastors do need a uniform.
dstenske Your tradition, like mine (Presbyterian) discourage collars, but if you addressed it from the pulpit, and you were willing to stand by your decision, got for it.
I’m a Fundamental Holiness minister I seen a lot of us holiness preachers starting to wear the collar now. Just like the Baptist some of us look down to that stuff but now they’re starting to get popular in some holiness churches. I’m not against ministers wearing callers as long as they don’t wear it to be a show off because Jesus had to get on the Pharisees about that.
Baptists ‘look down’ on everyone outside their own understanding and interpretations. Your ‘looking down’ attitude and bigotry is something that you need to tackle way more than anything you wrap round your neck
All I read is conversion and that all so called regions are one! This is wrong.
I'm a Baptist and go to a Baptist church and our pastor wears a clerical collar on some ocassions. Mostly when we take holy communion or special ocassions like baptisms and maybe weddings. Other times he simply wears his suit and tie and puts on his geneva gown or whatever it's called when he preaches. At times when we get visitors or new comers, they ask what denomination we are even though the sign says Baptist outside and all over. I find most protestants and evangelicals believe the clerical collars are a roman catholic thing when in reality it started with some Presbyterian ministers I believe and from there moved on to Anglicans, Methodists, Reformed, Baptists, Lutherans most of the protestant world etc and then it eventually made itself into the roman catholic sphere.
Fr. Peter...A wonderful explanation for the use of the Clerical collar by Clergy and Pastors. I look forward to more of the Videos from the Theopolis Institute
Kindest Best Wishes,
Your Humble and Unworthy Servant,

😂
Thank you for the reason for the clerical collar. I compleated Roman Catholic Seminary and no one could give me a satisfactory reason why we wore roman collars. AlI I ever heard was that we had . done it for centuries. I assumed I wore a clerical collar to remind me who I serve, who anointed me, and just as important, to behave. I had been a wildland firefighter before seminary days and if I didn't have custody of my tongue all of the time, my language could get pretty salty. I've been pretty sick the last several years and mostly lay around in blue jeans and a white t-shirt. Your thoughts remind me I should wear my collar even if I'm home. Thanks. +Bp Robert Withrow, SSBM
Very good points about separating a pastors look from others!
Wonderful explanation of the "Uniform" for servants of the most High God
I remember my priest once told my youth class that they were actually flea collars to keep the fleas off 😂 he was joking of course
@oneconcerned what a bitter , harsh, judgmental person you are, your self inflated ‘I’m right and there wrong’ is Pharisaical to the extreme and frankly sickening. Whatever denomination you belong too that share your crushing attitude, I would never want to cross its threshold and be subjected to such bigotry
@oneconcerned How many of the little schismatic ‘true churches’ lead people astray also? It would be interesting to see statistics about holiness and different denominations and churches.
The real fact of the matter if I may make such a claim is that we cannot tell who is a believer and who isn’t, who will be saved at the end of the day and who won’t. We can make guesses and estimates, but that’s all. Really the only way to measure a church’s holiness is probably in how well they know the word, how well they preach it, and in what good works they do.
‘Dog collars’ help remind ordained ministers of their station and signal to others that this person is a minister. Yes, there are risks with such a separation, but there’re also risks in following regular guy preachers and their private revelations.
No church is perfect, and every church and every individual is in a constant struggle as long as they live.
Collars help to open doors, ears, eyes, hearts amen
This is an excellent explanation, Sir. Thank you
I’ve always understood that when one wears the garb there are not themselves, they are their office.
Like a cop can speak for the police for the police when he’s in uniform but he can only speak about the police out of uniform.
My elderly cousin was in the clergy. We called him by his title while he had on the collar and his first name when he was not wearing it.
I’d like to hear more about what occasions of daily life you do and don’t wear it.
That was a great argument. Very helpful. Thanks.
Great vid. I've been wrestling with doing this for a couple of years now. The UK Baptist scene is as you described in the early part of the video but I'm beginning to beg to differ.
The Reformed(specifically the Scottish Presbyterians) invented the clerical collar, right?
Micah Matthew Think you’ll find
it originates from the Collars
Rabbis used from around
1869,Protestant clergy
took their cue from
there!
Yes; the scots presbys pioneered it
wonderful explanation.
It makes perfect sense that you would want the sheep to see you from a distance instead of wondering where their Shepard is in the crowd.
Is that sheep or goats?
@@georgewidger2306 Are you confused because your one of those people that refers to children as kids?

Great explanation
I have a question: if you are a licensed minster (and not an ordained) to preach, is it appropriate to wear a full clergy collar or any collar at all. I am Baptist by denomination.
There is no clergy distinction in the New Testament. Pastors are a function not an office. All believers are a priesthood.
In Acts the Presbyters and deacons are a specially ordained class. They are not the same as old testament priests, nor are they spiritually superior, but they are a biblical, administrative office
Makes complete sense to me.
Thanks for sharing your views, however, there was zero scriptural backing to the need for collars. What happened to the priesthood of every believer?
God bless you, thank you !
Thank you so much for this,I learnt a lot. I don't have my opinion and my collar reminds me that I am Jesus' slave.
This is very interesting
kind of lost me with the slave analogy ..but I understood the concept
When slaves were being transported they had them in shackles around the NECK, wrist, & ankles.
Speaking TRUTH with sarcasm
How K? Straight forward I thought in the vein of Paul.
@@wallyadams8444 Because no one can be a slave to Christ...Christ gives us all a choice to whom we shall serve ..He has made it clear; you are either with me or against me when pertaining to being a Child of His...now the main point I am giving off is that when we are Born again believers in Christ we are to become free from enslavement and oppression ..through the washing of His Blood we are healed and cleanse from the iniquities that was set before us, because of man lack of conscience...Now I understand the context; but it was incorporated wrong😂
@@ms.fortune2957 is sarcasm the right word choice? 😅😂
It seems to me that Paul is clear in Romans 6:19-22 that we are no longer slaves to sin and are instead slaves to righteousness and quote "slaves to God." All men are slaves. The question is, who are we slaves of? Christ or sin? We are united to Christ in our baptism (Romans 6:3-11, Galatians 3:27) thus washing away our shackles to sin and becoming slaves of Christ. So why would you say we are not slaves to God?
Can a seminary teacher wear clerical collar?
Interesting. Similar to Zen priest's reasons for rakusu, samuei and robe and why I rather easily transitioned from theism to buddhism, the forms, uniforms, chanting and such were helpful. namaste
So your seed found rocky soil?
@@2drsdan Sure but there's a huge chasm btwn theism and buddhist practice. Theism teaches, in every moment, we have the answers, given by an enigma and we KNOW that with finality. The dharma teaches to always ask the questions, we don't know the answers but each of us can find the solution all by our 'selves'.

@@Theopolisinstitute my pastor introduced me to your ministry this year. I'm very thankful for James Jordan's 'Through new eyes', Chilton, Leithart, Alaistar Roberts, Pastor Meyers, etc. These concepts need to be made available to more people!
@@cayetano6547 I'm so much in agreement!
Really appreciated this, Dr. Leithart. Obviously, anyone could buy/wear clerical garb be they Christian or not (on Amazon Prime no less!). They could simply assume to themselves the authority to represent Christ and church (or at least get a great parking spot at the hospital!). Is there a way to govern who represents the true church? Or, should the collar be bestowed on someone by a/the church? Secondly, do you wear the collar whenever you're in public? I assume you don't wear it to mow grass or the like. But, do you wear it everywhere or only in an "official" church capacity? Thanks for suffering my questions. I thoroughly enjoy the ministry of the Theopolis Institute.
Did you really just write this ridiculous question? Clerical garb for a good parking spot and gardening?
I agree.
We are Crowned Kings
That is what happens when you study at Cambridge :)
Can you say more please about the connection with slavery? I have not heard that before. Can you prove it historically? Thx.
Slaves used to wear iron neck rings with long chains.
@@cayetano6547 disgusting
because you are a slave to god...
Slavery my beloved does not end but, we only change masters, being under the powers of Satan means we are slaves to Satan while being under the powers of the Christ also means we are slaves of Christ, nowander we have two yokes the yoke that gets destroyed by the reason of the anointing & also the yoke of Christ...kindly read Isaiah 10vs27-28 & Mathew 11vs27 & going upwards....
I love what you are saying. Question, what about the Geneva robe as opposed to the white robe?
The Reformed churches emphasized preaching, rather than the Eucharist, as the center of worship. The black robe was worn showing the authority of the minister to proclaim the Word, similar to the robes worn by judges. The white robes are worn by Lutheran, Anglican, and Catholic priests as well as altar servers symbolizing their purity as baptized Christians. However, more and more Reformed and Presbyterian pastors are wearing white robes.
Cool !
BLEESINGS
For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6: 20-23

No bible reference for this. Philosophical not biblical explanation
A clerical collar make not a priest. It’s plastic and can be cleaned with a dishwashing cleaner. Priesthood is lived out! It’s not mere plastic! A cheap plastic white collar makes not a priest!
i want one cuz why the fuck not? they look so ridiculous i like it. granted im into weird shyte so natural i would sport this modern "uniform" cuz you cant stop me....
I am fully in favor of the collar. I like anything that gives clarity to the distinction between the clerical office and the mere congregants, which is something many Protestant churches give no respect to. “I don’t respect your office, you’re not a good enough shepherd of your flock! You’re not in the Spirit enough!” Yada yada yada. Churches really need to quit Being run by a bunch of subjective garbage.
If you want to speak for Christ pastorally you should renounce your Lutheran ideologies and return to the fold of God's One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Deo Gratias.
"Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 6:1, NASB)
"For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? (Matthew 6:25, NASB)
Garb isn’t biblical. Your clothes don’t mark you as a Christian; God’s glory shining on your repentant life does.
The verses you cited have literally nothing to do with what he stated
Hey, with Protestants like him, who needs Papists?
Show me where the apostles wore uniforms. The Pharisees did and you know how Jesus dealt with them. Every believer is a slave of Christ, not only pastors. Also every believer is a priest.
The fullness of the Holy Spirit and of faith in a person plus his conduct and speech will show what he is, special clothes that show I'm different, special , important, are not needed. Men love adding their superficial traditions to the church.
I am a beliver but no slave

Are you familiar with Rom 6:17 - 19?
Oh, I thought it was because you an incognito Jesuit possing as a Protestant. My mistake.
It’s called the Roman collar and there’s no point in wearing that wedding band until you are married to the Catholic Church, the bride of Christ, as you are made another Christ at the Catholic ordination
It’s called a Roman collar for a reason. Not for anyone who wants to wear it. Only a Catholic priest should wear it. That’s final.
They were actually invented by a Presbyterian minister and only years later adopted by Roman Catholics. www.kencollins.com/glossary/vestments.htm#clergyshirt www.kencollins.com/glossary/vestments.htm#tab
Roman Catholic Priests are not the only clergyman in the Roman Catholic Church. The church has three levels of clergy: Deacons, Priests and Bishops. All three are ordained clergy. Because they are all clergy, they have a canonical right to where the collar.
I think you mean only Roman Catholic should wear it - go look up the definition of the word Catholic
