Did they kick out the person with hiccups or weird laugh if that's what it was? It really distracts during this episode, surprised he didn't mention it.
I'll never forget the 'catch it, kill it, bin it' signs around Covid times in 2020 and someone posted 'do nothing, press nothing...GET KRYTEN!' one of the only times I laughed out aloud properly from something I've seen online 🤣🤣
Vindaloo is a really hot curry, from goa, Indian (where the Portuguese brought chilli's from South America). British people, usually men, often go to Indian restaurants and get a really hot curry to prove how manly they are. Vindaloo is normally the hottest. It tastes pretty good, but the taste is often overpowered by the pain. This is where the larger comes in.
@@headred76 Vindaloo is probably the 2nd hottest Indian curry after Phaal and we are talking Indian curries are we not? So,hardly "by a long shot" is it🤷♂️
Who doesn’t like this episode? It’s great. Kryten: “Well?” Lister: “Well …what?” Kryten: “I want to know: Is that normal?” Lister: “What? Taking pictures of it and showing it to your mates? … No. It’s not.”
1:48 "We don't want him, go away. You took him, you can keep the smegger." DNA is one of my favourite episodes, just for this quote about aliens abducting Glen Miller and then wanting to bring him back to humanity, and man+ Lister saying in his high pitched squeaky voice "I can't keep up I'm knackered!"
When Rimmer asked Lister and Cat if there was anything about their bodies they'd like to improve, Cat's response was "Me?! Are you serious?! Most people leave their bodies to medical science. I'm leaving mine to the Louvre, baby!" The Louvre is the famous museum and art gallery in Paris where the Mona Lisa is displayed.
You'll note that it's the ending from Jaws - blowing up a pressurised container in its mouth. "How can the same s*** happen to the same guy twice?" is Die Hard 2. Also love the indian restaurant style monster music.
Josh in case you didn’t know, the actor who plays Kryten (Robert Llewellyn) was the veteran from the Bottom episode “Parade”. I believe you’ve already reacted to it.
Just discovered your channel and loving it! I find this episode really interesting. As an autistic person, I take from it 'The person you authentically are is valuable as it is, don't lose that to chase some sense of normality'. I've seen other people take it the totally opposite way like 'Don't ever dream' and they take it negatively. I understand that point of view too! Idk, for a comedy show, it throws up a lot of thought-provoking stuff and that's why I always come back to it. Love your reactions, love the channel.
I love this episode, also the whole thing about lager, is here in th UK you normally have it with a vindaloo as it numbs the spice. As for kryten, it's mentioned in the opening crawl for season 3 and expanded on in the books is that kryten in s2 was meant to be the final episode of s2. When he takes listers bike he crashes it pretty much straight away, so Lister rebuilds him but has a few bits left over.
The thing about lager killing a vindaloo is reference to the fact that alcohol helps counteract the spiciness. As a vindaloo eater myself, i can confirm that it works better than milk.
I'm probably not the only one to mention this, but the moment when Lister was looking at Polaroids of Kryton's penis, that's exactly what he was looking at! So his reactions were 100% genuine 😂
Love re-watching Red Dwarf with you. Haha! Any of Kryten's quirks and foibles can now be explained with 'In the first episode, dude was taking care of skeletons'!
"The only thing that can kill a vindaloo is a larger" British people love a beer with a curry, most pubs do curry's and a free pint on a Tuesday, and you will get free bottle of cobra with an Indian takeaway
@CaptainBollocks.... you could be right, it's not escaped my notice that many of the traits people are likely to point out about someone or accuse them of having are flaws that they possess in spades, for a prime example: Larry Craig, nuff said
The lager joke is referencing the fact that larger helps kill the mouth burning sensation from a Vindaloo. Vindaloo is a type of curry. When you see that word, it means the curry is hot. It's partly why larger and curry is such a popular combination here. It's like anything though, Vindaloo will seem overwhelming hot in the beginning but you get used to it
Definitely watch the show for what it is. The Kryten character is used for exposition when off the ship, because Holly is on Red Dwarf, explaining why he knows stuff to tell us. Also, the girl who lister sees as Camille was actually his girlfriend at the time.
I don't know if anyone's brought this up but it's generally accepted that Kryten was the missing "mother" ingredient for the classic family sitcom dynamic - mother, father, stuck-up kid, slacker kid and idiot kid. Red Dwarf is basically a family sitcom set in the future, same as how Blackadder is a middle-management sitcom set in the past
Never heard that theory before. It was originally designed as 'Porridge' in Space. It's an Odd Couple sitcom not a family sitcom. Kryten was brought in for exposition and so they could write more varied scenarios
12:03 I've no idea what that last one is. 18:19 The Louvre. He's comparing his physique to the great works of art. 19:24 If I recall that started out as an accident in rehearsal, but it so fitted the humour of the series they opted to put it in.
13:04 as a brit explain it to american, the best way i can replace lager with milk when u have somat too spaicy larger is the brest at removing the burn lol also helps when it gets to the ring of fire moment the next day lol also fun fact the cast of red dwarf when americas made their version they nick named it White dwarf... americans might not see it as funn y its just a humour barier not sure if americans undstand banter lol
this episode was abit dumb but makes sense they took this route i.e if you were creative wouldn't it be interesting if a machine became human in an ACTUAL human body not just "oh look he thinks like a human thus sentient" however alot of the gags make no sense, kyrton is suppose to be a genius so no way he would make assumptions his body still works like a machine still
Red Dwarf is un-fakable! No wonder the American remake pilot was a complete flop. It was low concept; bad jokes; very little style; and all of Red Dwarf's original fun and substance removed. America needed, and still needs, to see Red Dwarf in its original form. Take American TV out of the hands of American TV Execs; and you'll suddenly find far more quality programming on America's TVs. This should air in its original form. How many ideas have you seen lifted right from Red Dwarf; and transplanted straight into far less interesting Sci-Fi?
Myself, wife and her friend went to the recording of this. Fun watching, no laugh track - that's us 😄
Luckyyy

Did you know, Alan Rickman originally went for the rimmer roll, but in the end because Chris barrie was an impersonator he got the job!

Shame you didn't play Kryten's laugh after the mechanoid lightbulb joke, because your laugh constantly reminds me of that one, in rhythm and cadence.
Your getting so close to the ‘dimension jump’ episode the best episode with the character ever

Larger kills the heat of chilli... Hence how it kills a vindaloo!
I believe his wife is Australian so if she has been on tv it might be over there.
Vindaloo is a hot curry, largar beer takes away the heat

Unfortunately you didn't get one of the best jokes I've ever seen on a tv comedy "of course lager, the only thing that can kill a vindaloo..."
Dude what happened to all the xfm stuff? Rockbusters had educating ricky just ended...
I subbed to patreon and couldn't watch anything
