      Than carry a gun. i will continue not to. i am a gun owner and choose not to carry when i hike for my own reasons. with that said i would never talk someone out of carrying a gun on any trail. Backpackers seem to tell other backpacker how to hike. if you do not do it like me you are not a real backpacker....

      I'm inclined to agree, however since the AT passes through so many states, each with their own firearm laws, it seems to me you could just as likely get hemmed up by the Law as run into a potential aggressor.

      Isn’t it against the law to carry in national parks?

    • @hellaacapella
      @hellaacapella 5 лет назад +1

      Last time I checked, a forest ranger will never search you unless you're an idiot and are openly shooting or open carrying in a prohibited area. Many things are illegal like driving without registration or not wearing a seatbelt but you will never get caught if you are smart and aware of your surroundings..... when is the last time you met a ranger that detained and searched your person or belongings for no reason?! You guys need to stop blindly following dumb rules and keep yourselves armed against danger when you are out in the wilderness.
      As for the swat story, the shooter is a total ding bat for shooting thru the door. In most states you have to wait for the intruder to actually gain access into your residence not just blindly shoot someone who is at your door... besides, any decent attorney would get you off the hook if you shot at police officers that burst into your house in the middle of the night unannounced and you were not wanted for a crime or are a fugitive

      The crazy people were locked up for a reason. The rest of us had the right to have our loved ones, children and potential grandchildren. We have missing & deceased loved ones. Meanwhile, criminals and batshit crazy people are living nice lives under the victims names and associated fraudulent identity. We search for the missing & mourn the dead. We actually have a message from a man getting paid as a SGT of a police department that doesn't understand the complaint!! Yet another one sent the message that the criminals have Freedom Of Speech when we sent information to have people arrested in that area. A Psychopathic Serial Killer was working as a Doctor in Ohio USA and arrested for the murder of 27 people by lethal injection of the deadly drug fenythol... It's absolutely horrifying & mortifying. I wear the scar's from when I nearly lost my life shortly after the kidnapping of the children and the theft of my identity at that time. Even in the past year and half someone else had fraudulent lab work done under my identity. Somebody sent a video of a father who was in jail and surprised his 14 year old son for his birthday & another one of a daddy daughter dance's for convicted criminals in Prison. We didn't know we had to be convicted criminals to have our children. Straight A Honor Roll Students who come up missing without a trace are kidnapped. We carry the Law Enforcement clearance of one of the missing on us. We have people who made themselves part of the family and are no relation what so ever. We asked the police to arrest the people living in a dead loved ones home and the police thought we could talk about it. We asked for the people responsible to be arrested. One of my husband's Aunt's is dead. A woman who is using her name and associated fraudulent identity is showing up in Florida and Lake Zurich Illinois USA and I really don't give a crap how old the B...h is the VICTIM is dead!! My God will never forget or forgive.

      @faultroy Reagan cut the mental health funding in the early '80's and the Republicans have cut it more since then. I'm old enough to have seen the huge increase of homelessness and mentally ill people living without any help. So it isn't a new thing and it isn't caused by mental health experts but by the lack of them. As far as this being a wealthy country, it is mostly wealthy for only a few but even then, mental health problems don't only occur if you are poor. Wealthy families can afford to get help for their kids but even then, I've met plenty of mentally ill people who came from wealthy families.

    I love nature.....but that kind of isolation can be scary when you least expect it. Wild predators, both 4-legged and 2-legged, do lurk in the shadows and I've heard of a lot of scary stories on that long trail. It's nothing to be avoided or anything, but being informed, trained, protected and prepared is absolutely crucial in my opinion. I never go to the woods without my Glock .40/extra mags, a can of bear spray and my kabar. It should be common knowledge by now, but if not, check out the "missing 411" cases. I can't believe anyone would go that far into the wilderness with a folding pocket knif or nothing at all, but many do, which completely baffles me. 99 times out of 100 you will be safe and have a great time, but it only takes that 1/100 event to scar you for life.....or END your life. Don't be scared, be prepared.

    Good morning from Erwin TN in Unicoi County. I help locally with AT shuttles and it's safe to say that all of us associated with the AT are profoundly affected by this tragedy. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. I do want to say that law enforcement here did not want this monster back on the streets. However with no one willing to press charges or testify in regards to the felony aggravated assault charges and with Sovereign willing to plead guilty to the lesser misdemeanor charges he was able to process out much more quickly. With the felony charges off the table the $25,000 bond was no longer an issue. I as well as local law enforcement felt like he was a ticking time bomb and eventually something like this would happen. That said, if you're a thru hiker and you're reading this, don't let this take you off trail. Take time to process this and return to your hike. Keep the victims memory in your heart and take that to Katahdin.

      ArmedGringo45 it is when government employees are afforded rights that citizens do not have.
      It is tyranny to allow you to carry in all 50 states and not a license holder.
      It’s actually the ESSENCE of tyranny.
      Your reasons for carrying are no different for a citizen. Protect themselves and others if need be. The tyranny part is when your constitutional right is granted because you have a badge, and denied as a citizen. The bill of rights refers to the “people”, not the government. The government took an sworn oath to protect those very rights, yet violated them on a daily basis because “they’re just doing their job”.

    This attacker slipped through the authorities hands at least twice before the fatal attack! I live in Unicoi County, and there were threats being made to random hikers on the Appalachian Trail by the attacker. He was threatening them with a mechete and knife. He was arrested the next day and was fined and released. The Sheriff said the other hikers declined to press charges. Then, a few days later, Bristol VA police said they were called to a convenience store where the now known attacker was telling a clerk that he was some sort of hit man or something, and had a hit out for the owner of the store who drove a white truck. Well, the clerk just so happened to drive a white truck, and that made him feel uneasy, so he called the police. The police said they questioned him, he downplayed the incident, and was then asked to leave by the police. Unicoi County Sheriff Hensley said he tried everything he could to keep him off the trail. Be safe out there! Peace!
