  • Our friend Randy Commans from Maxima Racing Oils recently went to Iceland to ride with the guys from Ride With Locals. While there, they were all on the 701 Enduro and Randy fell in love with the versatility of the platform. So much so that he decided he needed one... only his would be orange. So he picked up a 2021 KTM 690 Enduro R to build out as his ultimate offroad dualsport.

    Arguably the best dual sport out there. Would sure be nice to a refresh that incorporates the 890 fuel tanks and something similar to the Seat Concepts comfort XL everyone puts on. Nice build

      Yenko makes a decent product. But the Aurora is a far more elegant product. The parts design and quality is far superior. The weight far less. The installation is really quite simple. You definitely are not buying the same product from two brands with different price tags. The Yenko could very well serve your needs perfectly.

    Hope KTM listens to the riders in the global market, who want lightweight 500-600cc adventure dual sport bikes, when building the KTM 490 Enduro. Keeps his fingers crossed that it will be an R version, comes with spoked wheels and that it will be light despite the twin from CF Moto SR450 and is not a heavy 390 touring adv copy. Then a future follow-up with a light KTM 590 Enduro R. It would be a double sport heaven!

    I own one and it is fun in the dirt and goes like hell on the highway too! BUT if you are not going to do some serious highway? Get something much lighter! Has more power than you can ever need or use off-road so WHY pay the weight penalty if you are not gonna ride highway? A 350exc would be far better off-road in my opinion....Or a 500exc/crf450 even but again even those will have power you won't use off-road ...well I mean unless you are a damn Toby Price riding WFO across the desert expanses! LOL which 99% of us trying to decideon which bike really are nowhere near that level (outside of ourfantasies! right?) But I LOVE my 690! I really really do! So fun on the road and once I got used to it I can spank a lot of "kids" (anyone with no gray in the beard lol) riding their DRZs and 250s etc off-road too! ....Its not the power it is just great suspension and handling and crisp clean throttle braking superb clutch etc....having said that however it does tend to wear me out early on.....but that's mostly advanced age I recon

    • @dougiequick1
      @dougiequick1 2 года назад

      BTW I hooked up with a Super Moto club ride of about 20 bikes mostly way younger riders than myself.....they were all on 17" wheels with slicks etc up in the canyon roads....amazingly even with my stock knobbies and like 17llbs psi I hung mid pack with em for like 25 miles of riding! My bike was probably the fastest of all there with 74 HP and a 6 speed with quick shifter....that likely played a lot in keeping up because whatever I was losing in corners I generally could make it right back up on the straights...can't help thinking how fun the 690/701 super Moto version would be! Makes me want to lace a 19 up front and 17 in the rear and do both fire roads AND SM! Which would also lower the seat height a much welcome an inch or so! Actually then would make me want to lower the rear a tad to level it out and maybe get seat height down around 33"! VERY appealing even for sliding around on fast fire roads!

      Just hit the gym more to keep up with youngsters: -> Have you tried Beta 390RR? How do you experience KTM 500 Exc street performance as a dual sport? KTM 500 Exc is popular among youngsters and hooligans, they drive almost exclusively on the street. Then it should be fine for dual sport 50/50 use. Do not know if steering dampers increase road performance as well as off road? Is the KTM 500 Exc underestimated as a dual sport/traveling enduro/lightweight adventure bike?

      I have a 2019 model ,off road feels much lighter than it is do to it low center of gravity, and with it's wp xplore suspension it's a very powerful Large displacement dirt bike, on road it feels very planted and with it's new engine configuration makes it very smooth at hwy speed it can cruise 75-80mph all day, even at 90mph the bike is solid and planted and still has the passing power if you want, I was a little sceptical at first about the electronic part, but I was totally wrong, the electronic aid doesn't slow you down, it just makes the corrections faster then you think, In conclusion in order to appreciate this new generation of the 690 Enduro r you have to see the whole package that the bike has to offer, I came from riding the Dr 650 Xr650l and Drz400, for me the 690 is an evolution of those bikes it's what the Japanese manufacturers gave up on it.
      It's a large displacement modern dual sport bike Is not an 890 adv. Or an exc 500, Is just in another segment in between those two

    I hope AXP fixed that skid plate because I ordered one for my 2020 and it flat would not fit...and I am far from the only one...my guess is that KTM frame weldings are not totally uniform meaning AXP used a sample bike to design the plate but they did not take into account that some bikes would not have the frame piece precisely all in the same location....you see the stock skid plate uses pegs that slip into round slots just for the purpose but for some unknown bizarre reason I can not fathom AXP ignored those and decided to use the frame cross piece (don't know what else to call it)....It was SO frustrating for me I tried for like an hour trying to get it to fit.....and AXP? ZERO help AT ALL would not even reply to my pleas so I returned to the vendor who I noticed afterwards discontinued selling them.....If you are wondering what I went with it was a carbon fiber wrap around skid plate made by ELine which although wonderful looking and MUCH lighter than the 5ish pound AXP unit I do not recommend it either simply because it is a pain to get on and off....at least it DOES use the OEM plate mounts but because it is so rigid whereas the stock is flimsy there is not enough give to simply stick in the rear mounts and put the two bolts in the front like the OEM...instead you have to fight it and keep everything loose until bolts are started and then gradually work it into place and tighten it up meaning it takes much longer....and it actually contacts and binds in places....other brands use a bracket up front ....MUCH better design! My advice get a plate that uses the OEM rear mounts but that has an adjustable bracket for the front.....I like carbon fiber best so light! Last thing the big girl needs is even more weight if you ask me!

If you want to ride more street, then I'd jump up to a twin like the 890. I have two sets of rear wheels if I decide to do a ride with a lot of pavement. My two cents.

      I use mine to travel on. So it does long highway days, and full off road and desert work. So the 450 would suck on the highway, and the 890 would be more work off road, and it's a lot heavier to pick up multiple times a day when needed. The 690 cruises at 150km/h without issue, fully loaded. It's as close to a unicorn bike as they come.
