Watching this again, I can see they had to edit/rewrite the part where the hunter takes Granny and Red out of the wolf's stomach by saying he did so through the mouth when it's obvious the wolf has a stitch on his belly after the rocks were placed in.

Ya gotta love the safe dub: juice not wine. Putting the rocks in the mouth when you clearly see stitches on the wolfs belly. And when the wolf drops dead since u don’t see him run away.

In the Japanese original, it's definitely wine not juice, so much so that the wolf clearly falls asleep drunk (which explains why he doesn't wake up); the hunter opens his belly and not his mouth, as can be seen from the stiches. But from the movements of the eyes and the circles on the head (15:50) it is clear that the wolf drops unconscious and not dead. We don't know if he will die of starvation later; but at the end of this short he is still alive.

In the real world, no dobt the stones would soon kill him; but in a fairy tale where a grandmother and a little girl can survive in a wolf's stomach and where the wolf itself can easily survive the opening and stiching of its belly, he could survive as well with some pebbles inside. As you said, in the versions where he dies, it's not exactly the stones that kill him but the water. Here he doesn't drown and, after falling, he is still alive, albeit stunned. I think it is plausible he survives (even if, heavy as he is now, he will only be able to get fruit and vegetables, no more grandmothers and little girls...🤣)@@GDeNofa
