Thankyou thankyou for uploading these.. bloody brilliant .. always loved Spike.. I was in the Army in the 70's80's.. i gotta say Military humour was still the same ..but spike just enhances it and takes it to another level.. brilliant..
☘️Ah brilliant. I read this book many many many years ago or maybe a bit less and was delighted to stumble upon this video by complete chance. Don’t remember Spike stopping for an ad break throughout the book. RIP. Another genius sadly missed.☘️🇮🇪🇺🇦🇺🇸🇬🇧☘️💙💛☘️👍
Spike came to South Africa in 1975 to perform 3 shows with the aim of raising money to buy a small plot of land near his home in the UK. He wanted to stop trees being felled on this land. My mother was a radio announcer producer for the SABC and arranged a series of interviews with Spike. Two of these interviews were at our home and Spike stayed over for lunch on one occasion. The Goon Show had been broadcast on radio in SA for many years and was hugely popular. Spike's shows were sold out - which amazed him... he said he had no idea how popular he and the Goon Show was in SA. I'd had a copy of Puckoon for a few years and Spike signed it for me. On the cover page we glued a photo of Spike with our family taken during the lunch. In 1995 it was stolen during a house robbery, and was never recovered.
by the end of book 1 i have screamed out laughing 3 times, spat tea out once and held my sides hearing about Plunger Bailey's genital manipulations. Moving onto book 2 now, lord please have mercy upon me. Been over 30 years since i read all of them and i have had it in mind to buy them all again, thank you for posting these :)
I’ve read all 7 of Spike’s War Memoirs “ trilogy” and loved every one of them, currently own them as ebooks. Never knew that audio version(s) were available, wonderful for listening in the car on a long drive.
One of the funniest, brightest human beings to ever grace this planet, plus Rommel Gunner who, Mussolini his part in my downfall & Puckoon - never equalled
I know, but I can't do anything about it unfortunately. Never applied for the monetization side of youtube but as I don't own the rights to the content they can stick ads through it. If i had it my way there would be none at all and it doesn't seem to affect everyone the same. Some have loads of ads, some have none.
Sorry it wasn’t meant to be a slight on you. I for one, are really grateful for your efforts and I spend hours listening to what you and others like you take time to produce and leave it got the rest to listen to. It’s s great pity ‘someone’ comes along to spoil it and make money off others efforts. Keep well keep doing what ya doing! 🌺
I was first introduced to Spike's humour when i was waiting with my sister, for my brother to come out of a Sootie show on Bournemouth pier. There was a book shop in the entrance to the pier (we couldn't afford to actually go on the pier). My sister picked up "Rommel" and was guffawing while reading it. It was late 70s, I'm ashamed to tell you my sister "lifted" the book and took it home where i read it once she'd finished it. I've since read and loved all these books ever since (i paid for them). Sorry Spike for the loss of revenue for that stolen book, but it was my sister's fault not mine lol
Like others here, i have read this book many times over the years, along with the other memoirs of his war, it becomes clear that Spike suffered all his life with PTSD and the depression it caused, his humour was both intelligent and wacky, in Africa his hope to see a tiger was met with 'Milligan there are no tigers in Africa', later when veering off the road in a truck, his commander said what went wrong, he said 'sorry sir a tiger ran out in front of us'.
Many thanks for uploading, it's wonderful to hear this read by the man himself, and his failure to do so with a straight face. It must be fifty years since I read it, interweb confirms it was published in '71, but I never realised there was a set of seven books. I only ever read this one and Rommel, and I'm off to that one next. Thanks again.
@@tom52carey I am very familiar with that concept, being a huge fan of Douglas Adams's Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, ultimately a trilogy in five parts with a sequel by some Irish bloke I can't be bothered to try to spell.
Like most of the people who had left comments. I also read the book when it first published. A few years later I went into the Army. Things that Spike mentioned still happened in my time too. Especially as Spike mentioned when on guard and finding a guy enjoying himself with a girl. At the time when I was on guard we found a guy with a young lady in the vehicle park. As spike described, waiting for the appropriate moment, and not shout who goes there. But instead shouted “hands up”. At which the did and dropped the girl on the floor with his hands in the air. Fart lighting continued to. However lighting the fart was done with a lighter. The description of the blue army PT was still fitted the ones we wore. The were nicked named grandad Pele shorts.
When I was about 14/15 living in South Africa I read this book whilst listening to the Goon Show live on the radio, I was laughing so much my parents thought I was having a break down. I read Puckoon next
@@davidscott156 Monty's came after I had left SA (1991) but had chance to go there when I came over on holiday but I was already a cantankerous old man by then
I read this when it first came out and enjoyed reading it as i commuted to my apprenticeship in London, i laughed out loud at some of the illustrations, got strange looks from fellow commuters.
Listening to the Goon Show on the radio, the next day we would all do the one liners and accents of the funny bits. Just remembered that now! I read his book Adolf Hitler, my part in his downfall and remember a particularly funny part about the sergeant telling Milligan “you idiots, you’ve put the tent up inside out!” “That’s okay sarge, we’ll sleep on the outside!” 🤣
1972,in traction and well smashed after bike accident,a mate gave my this book,so painfull when laughing i could barely read a page b4 stopping for a rest!!!
The shambolic antics of mostly young men in the army are hilarious. But as an ex serviceman I can vouch for their accuracy. How we won the war sure beats me. Maybe the Germans were as bad.😂
I have all six books in paperback. And now i discover there's a seventh. He was a lunatic. He lived through a very harrowing experience especially in Italy, and STILL made it all sound funny. My favourite Milligam moment however is when he's being given a lifetimes achievement award, and the hosts are reading him a letter from then Prince Charles, and he refers to the Crown Prince as a Grovelling B*stard. ONLY Milligan, you never knew what he was going to say, but you could be certain it would be something no one else ever would.
Sorry Spike,,,, slight error in saying hop pickers in Sussex were cockneys.......they weren't. Most were either from Brighton and adjacent south coast towns, plus day pickers from local villages and Hastings etc. Indeed my father, one of his brothers and his mother are shown on the 1939 Register at Hare Farm, Brede. A hop farm we and others in the paternal family visited to pick hops up to the mid 1960s and which was sadly overtaken by mechanisation.
Have read all of his war memoirs but years ago.
So nice to hear him read them out. RIP Spike, you were a genius comic and thank you.❤
same here . read them on the way to work many moons ago... great to hear the man reading them..
X can

Thank You Spike for stopping Hitler.
Where would we be without Spike? Speaking German probably!
And stopping Mussolini too! What a man!!
Lol.
What a human being...found the funny in everything.
I dread to think where we'd be today were it not for Spike.

I read this on the London Underground coming home from work. I was literally crying with laughter very embarrassing . Fabulous series of books.
everyone looking at you. i had that on a coach to work.

Genius - thank you for uploading.
We all know his crazy humour, but we tend to overlook his poetic descriptions and his artistry ( seen in all his books).

Absolutely brilliant! I’ve the paperback as well.
I had to pause during the pig chase to recover from laughing.
Read this book and the others in the series decades ago (Rommel Gunner Who Etc) great laugh.
What an incredibly serendipitous story for the misguided American citizens in 2024🎉🎉🎉
I have spent a lot of time in Bexhill so know these places.

Very funny indeed, I found it on RUclips and put it on a playlist along with the war memoirs and a few other things
