While beginning a demo a on piece property in Wendell, NC today, I just so happened to stumble across one of these in an old shed that we were about to tear down. It was kept in a wooden box. Needless to say, I dumped the old fuel out, put new in it and works beautifully. Also found some newspapers stuffed in it dated August 13th, 1979.

You could have just looked at the bottom of the stove, 425f’s had the date printed on the frame up until the end of the 90’s until the last few runs off the assembly line when they switched to a sticker and may have removed the date (I dunno, I lose interest around 1980)
Models before the 425f, as far as I know, had their date printed on the fuel tank so those can be a little confusing due to the interchangeability of the tanks.

Weird design? These been made like this since 1920, the fuel pipe is called a generator, it goes over the burner to heat the pipe with liquid gas to change it from liquid to a vapor, for a clean burn. These stoves can run on white gas, unleaded gas, diesel, kerosene, alcohol, and propane. I wouldn't buy anything else. They are the best thing since sliced bread! Good morning, I just pulled my old 425 out of the shed and tried to fire it up. The problem is that when I pressure up the tank, there is a tiny leak out of the front of the generator. I pulled the valve assembly apart and cleaned it very well without scratching the brass. It slowed the leak substantially however there is still a drop or two coming out of the front of the generator approximately every 10 seconds. Any thoughts or ideas? Was camping this weekend and it stopped working. Seems that the generator was working but that big silver “fuel catcher” (?) was not collecting it. We wondered if water got in it from a storm but I don’t think so. Any ideas?

    • @roxyhuang4623
      @roxyhuang4623  5 лет назад +1

Sometimes insects can crawl into the generator and/or components. Sometimes make nests etc. Or something can block it. What I would do is take the generator off and take the components apart and just burn through it. I'd use a torch I have here. Perhaps some pipe cleaners? If it is gunked up inside use some 100% alcohol.
It's also possible the catcher ? is working but the burner was really wet like you said. I've see only a part of the burner work from that. Again I camp with a mini hand torch so I'd use that and heat the burner up immensely to dry out any water. Or take a small splash of fuel and lite it up to dry them out then try running it. The components are beyond simple.

Hi there. You should store the naphtha fuel (wouldn't recommend actual gasoline.coleman branded fuel is simply called camp fuel) in the can or container you got it in. If you leave it in it can build up an enamel that will clog things but this takes a very long time. Again if you use gasoline expect it to become clogged very soon.

Sangeeta Motwani- Are you serious?? You realize that propane is not available in a liquid state? Propane stoves use compressed gas canisters(filled with Propane) that when released the propane vaporizes into a gaseous state where it is then burned. This stove uses a liquid fuel that is then pressurized manually(the pump). When the fuel is permitted to flow it is atomized/vaporized by the heat from the flame that is keeping the fuel tube hot(the long tube from fuel tank that goes across the burner) and then burnt as a gas.

Doesn't ANYONE read the instruction that are ON THE STOVE windscreen right in front of them? Just about every "how to light a Coleman stove" video screws it up by NOT FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS. Pump it up. Lighting lever up. Hold your match or lighter to the burner and OPEN THE VALVE AT LEAST 2 FULL TURNS. Try this. IT WORKS. Really. Every time. Everyone want to baby the valve or just crack it open a little bit. THIS FLOODS THE GENERATOR and makes big yellow flames. I know it seems counter intuitive, that's why they put the instructions RIGHT THERE. It won't flare up. It won't. Really.

In 1966 the total directions were not on the lid. So if you bought one in a garage sale you wouldn't know that you have to turn the pump knòb 2 turns clockwise, and hold your thumb over the little hole to pressurize it. I found one and finally figured all this out. Also found out there is a square stem inside that turns, mine was stuck.

@@coltwinchester6124 That's true. The instructions weren't this complete in those days.
A stuck air stem would be a huge problem. haha! Glad you figured it out.
1966 would have been a 425D. That decal says:
      To Light Main Burner
      TURN LIGHTING LEVER UP
OPEN MAIN VALVE COMPLETELY AND LIGHT MAIN BURNER
AFTER ONE MINUTE TURN LEVER DOWN
OPEN VALVE AND LIGHT AUXILIARY BURNER AS NEEDED
blah, blah, blah. Yada, yada, yada.
PLEASE READ COMPLETE INSTRUCTION SHEET CAREFULLY
If you don't care about staying period correct, you can get more complete instruction decals for it. The models changed but the procedures for the newer ones work with all of them. Get a newer replacement decal or just memorize the steps and don't loan it out. Haha! After a few times, it should be second nature. Any reference to number of pumps is a minimum and start pumping again as soon as it lights.
Sometimes they ARE missing, painted over, or burned beyond recognition. You can order replacement decals and water slides.
