Just saw Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder this past weekend at Luckenbach TX and they did not disapoint, it was such a bucket list moment for me to hear such wonderful music! I hope you guys come back down here to Texas... we do love Bluegrass here too!
Ha ha, this is so great, and I’m not even finished watching it yet. It’s a rainy Covid day here in chat my nooga. My wife and I owned a Prevost for a couple years, purchased from Austin Hicks in Murfreesboro. Drove that thing 4x across the USA and Canada in one year . Was the most amazing machine. If you bring the banjer to the pick nick table, they will come. Jammed in RV parks all over the country. Glad we did it when we were younger, not sure now. She drove 50% of the time! Quite a partner! One guy walked up and said, “I live in Virginia, go over to this guy, Tom Adams, and take lessons”. Me, “How lucky you are! Tom is my hero!”
Got to see Ricky and KT around 11 years ago. Great concert and got to meet everyone after the concert. Got some new faces in the group since then. Think it’s about time I get to another concert!
Fantastic little mini-documentary. Love that you built up to the stage time.. and then played the entire song (Hwy 40 Blues). Ricky is an artist, and paints the stage with just the right colors (people). In the world of Bluegrass, you can't go wrong when one of those is Paul Brewster. Nicely done.
Been a fan of Kentucky thunder since the age of 6 and man definitely wish you guys would record again! Definitely dig the banjo playin. Good to see you guys on the road! Hope to see you guys live again someday!
I enjoyed watching this--just saw you guys at the Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield, Maine last night and was blown away!! Wow--what a phenomenal show!!
I really enjoyed watching this, thanks for sharing. Oh and I love you wallpaper on your laptop of Niagara Falls, that's where I live. I'm not sure if you'll remember or not but it was I and my fiancee who danced on stage in St. Catharines, ON.
Thank you for the video. My wife and I traveled from Minnesota and attended this concert as part of our 25th Anniversary. We have always been a fan of Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder and to attend a concert in this wonderful venue was an experience we will never forget. God Bless you.
You guys did great at my birthday party last sept. How was the brisket?? Ha ha. Did you guys hold on for dear life when y’all came down that driveway hill??
Russ.... you are a blessed man for sure! Thanks for the behind the scenes look at being on the road with Ricky. Many years ago at Iowa Public Television, I had the opportunity to meet Ricky... it was when Darrin Vincent had just joined Kentucky Thunder. Ricky was very gracious even though I met him backstage just after he had exited the men's room LOL. Maybe you could do another behind the scenes in a few months. Maybe you could take Bethany along to run one of your video cameras. Wait, how about this idea.... before Ricky retires, put together a documentary type of video. Anyway, thanks for this video and God bless you and Bethany.
Two year later! That is Awesome that you are driving a manual GTI and live CBGBS. Hope you still have the GTI. See you in McConnelsville OH! Can we bring you anything? Home made pickles? BBQ ?
Growing up in a family of bluegrass musicians I got to say this is life at the top of the bluegrass game. (Which Ricky and whoever fortunate enough to play for him deserve) but there’s a lot of sleeping in the seat of an old van and eating cold pork n beans for supper, setting up your on PA, and threatening to whip somebody to get paid after the show, for bands not near this level. Lol just saying...
I worked my way through those bands as well Shane! Last year before Skaggs I put over 25,000 miles on my personal car just getting to the start of the real trip with the band. I truly know how hard it can be and am beyond grateful for the comforts I have with Rick. I'm a very blessed and lucky man
That was good to see, but I know a lot more goes on than that Russ. You guys are a bunch of jokesters. Anyways, make another one, be fun to see some more
Does Ricky ride with you guys our does he travel separately?I worked with Moe Bandy for 5 years playing steel and fiddle and he was always with us but I know some guys like to travel separately from there band
I had wondered the same thing. I kept waiting for Ricky to show up in the parking lot to get on the bus. First time I saw him was on stage at the venue. I enjoyed this video and the simplicity of it.
That's what I hear. I am 20 years old and not tied down to anything or anyone and am willing to give it a whirl. One day it will happen. It's what I'm 100% passionate about.
Wow..this is awesome...you guys must be having a ball...thanks Russ for showing us the hard work, dedication and enjoyment of being on the road and enjoying good music together. Keep a pick'n guys! 😉 👍
Really loved this video. I've been following Ricky ever since I first saw him play with The Whites (known back then as Buck White and the Down Home Folks) at Bill Grants Bluegrass Festival in Hugo Oklahoma (probably late 70's early 80's - can't recall exactly, I was 11 or so). Anyway, I've always loved his sound whether it be bluegrass or country. This was an exiting video because I'd love to be part of a traveling music group and have ALWAY had a strange fascination with custom coaches and busses in general. Zorro is a beautiful machine. Anyway, keep making these on the road blog's please, as many as you can. If I can't work on a tour myself, I can at least feel a part of it with videos like this. My best to Ricky and all you guys.
Cool, I've seen the ones for de-tuning on Tele's, Waylon Jenning used one and Marty Stuart has one on his, but I do believe that's the first I've seen on a banjo!
Had the distinct pleasure of seeing Kentucky Thunder in concert here in Canada several years back. I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Professionalism all the way!!!!!
That was incredible! Great job! I throughly enjoyed seeing the realities of the inner circle doing what needs to be accomplished and staying musically fit along the way for the big show! You guys are all xcellent performers musically and I hope to see a reality show of some sort take place real soon, cause I think that would take you to that next level! It would definitly be a big hit and America would enjoy it! Take Care! AND God Bless! Phil from California!
Not planning seems to be a common thing in everything LOL IDK, but maybe someone needs to plan? Just a thought for tomorrow I say this not for here and now. I meant it for the world.
Nice to see a kitchen properly set up for coffee and it's various incarnations.
Very cool!! Have a safe trip to Lancaster PA and I hope to see yah there on the 22nd
Just saw you guys at The Birchmere in Wash DC. Great show, sat across from your dad & mom. Great Show!!!!
My wife and I were there too! Great show indeed!
Wonderful! Thank You!

Ricky skaggs is my favorite singer at all times.

Waiting on another one! This was great!
thanks for sharing this Russ, that was great to watch as a part-time picker with a real job
That was an awesome video, why does your banjo have extra tuning pegs? It is a 5 string right?
Bill Wheelis cheat a keys
For bending the notes
Cool, I've seen the ones for de-tuning on Tele's, Waylon Jenning used one and Marty Stuart has one on his, but I do believe that's the first I've seen on a banjo!
Bill Wheelis that's cool I didn't know Waylon used em
Yeah, he played in " drop D " a lot!
Had the distinct pleasure of seeing Kentucky Thunder in concert here in Canada several years back. I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Professionalism all the way!!!!!
Anazing that Paul Brewster can do that life at his age. Must be brutal to be on the road like that. Ok for young guys but too tough for me.
Hey Russ. This was really cool. Great music. Very informative for the fans. I saw you guys in Toronto and you sounded great! Thanks! Ed
Thanks for sharing. Something to look forwards to. C2nRDU
Dude that a freaking awesome video! Thanks for that. And do more.
That was incredible! Great job! I throughly enjoyed seeing the realities of the inner circle doing what needs to be accomplished and staying musically fit along the way for the big show! Not planning seems to be a common thing in everything
LOL
IDK, but maybe someone needs to plan?
Just a thought for tomorrow
I say this not for here and now. I meant it for the world.
Not a ton of seat2. Trying to figure out how they make much money? They deserve a good living!
