  • John Jorgenson at the Django Reinhardt Festival, Samois in 2005
This tribute to Danny Gatton is also dedicated to the memory of Mary Honcoop. Michael Horowitz has written a memorial here

Incidentally there is a free archive of gypsy jazz videos here which likewise is dedicated in her name www.djangobooks...

John Jorgenson belongs in the pantheon of the greatest players himself.... a well-done tribute to another Tele master.

I've been playing guitar or, rather, stringed instruments for almost all of my 44 years.
There could be no greater, no more heartfelt or tender playing than this in the memory of that man.

This song is a John Jorgenson original song he composed entitled 'In Memory Of Danny Gatton' which he wrote the night he heard that Danny had died. It was John's way of expressing his grief for the loss of his beloved friend Danny.
Now the intersting thing is that Danny Gatton could play just about any style of guitar from Charlie Christian, to Les Paul to Merle Travis, to all the rockabilly guys, Chet, Duane Eddy, you name it, EXCEPT he never played like Django Reinjardt! And NOBODY plays Django Reinhardt like John Jorgenson - PERIOD!

The night he found out that Danny Gatton had died that melody came to him in the flood of his emotions ... so he dedicated the song to his friend in the best way he knew how; the title.

Spoke to Danny many times via telephone never met him travelled from Toronto to Washington just to see him play found out he also loved Lenny Breau and he told me he had recorded hundreds of hours of he and Lenny playing informally where are those tapes? J.J. is a gifted genius

i hung out in Nashville for a couple hours with JJ (one of my musical heroes) back in the late 90s...we drank some beers and he told me great road stories of being on tour with DRB and Elton John...charming and super nice guy and world class musician...(plays the beezeebers out of the clarinet as well!)

So what if it sounds like Django? This is one great guitarist dedicating a song to the memory of another great guitarist.

I've always liked the King Curtis version of Melancholy Serenade (this), but I now can't stop listening to this version. He gypsy-jazz'ed it!

I think the name of the tune is ........" Melencoly Serenade" {the theme of "The Honeymooners", written by the "Great one" Jackie Gleason. ...,But of course,If I were on the "64 thousand dollar question"tv show,I would probably say "Swanee River",by the great Ed Norton ! .....as a matter of fact,I think I kinda' remember that being one of the songs played for Ralph on that episode...'Oh Yeah ,Danny does that on one of his studio records..,either Crusin'Duces,or Elmira St.....I think

A monster for sure! Never the fan of country music...I for some reason caught on to The Desert Rose Band in the 80's and probably because of the guitar work and John's sideburns. ; )
