Not sure why there is perceived hate by some for "bland" Japanese cars. It's only "bland" in the fact it doesn't breakdown! Considering its age, this Avensis appears to be in fantastic shape.

Spoke with someone today and they said they hated Japanese cars. Ridiculous statement.
Nothing beats those good honest cheap cars that are expected to perform daily with perfect reliability.
Bought the wife's Honda seventeen years ago secondhand, cheap and low mileage but all its ever needed in repairs outside normal stuff is a radiator, seventeen years! Been parked outside all that time, used everyday.
Took it on a long drive late last year and it returned 45mpg, reckon I could get 50 without much trouble, amazing.
    If you're wondering it's a 96 Rafaga with a 2.0 litre 5 cylinder.
The nineties were the glory years for Japanese cars.

I've never owned anything but Japanese cars so I think it is obvious where my loyalty/enthusiasm lies. Even if I won the lotto tomorrow I would still drive Japanese brands. Currently run a tidy 2003 Civic 1.6 VTEC which runs sweetly and is very tidy cosmetically. Also have a 2018 Mazda 2 Sport as my primary vehicle.

A friend of mine had an estate version, I borrowed it a couple of times, and thought it was a great car. Even today, 15 odd years after he sold it, he still wistfully regrets letting it go.

I would pick this over any brand new corsa or fiesta. And with our silly low speed limits it’s no slower than a much fancier car

My old Corolla of that vintage, the AC didn’t work, took it for a £60 re fill, and it was ice cold again. Amazing for a 20 year old car!

I've just bought a well looked after 2005 Corolla. I took it for a test drive and I was blown away. It felt like I was driving a new car yet the thing is 18 years old. It was quiet, smooth, strong and tight. Yes it's a bland car but in a way that's its character. Just sit back, cruise and watch the world go by. As I was driving, a hot head in a Focus ST was weaving aggressively through traffic but getting absolutely nowhere. At lights he was revving his engine and he tailgated cars in front. I just cruised sedately along in the Corolla and it felt great. I wouldn't have swapped my Corolla for that newer Focus ST.

I own a S reg 1.8 leanburn manual GLS version of that car. It was in fairly good state when I sold it 5½ years ago. It had a gearbox, radiator, complete exhaust and O2 sensor replaced. Wear and tear items like the clutch and brakes. The only things that had slight problem was the sunroof and the rear wiper which hada mind of it's own. Even the air-con worked. The fuel consumption was good too. I now drive a Mk3 1.8.

The air conditioning will very likely come back to life if it's recharged. The A/C systems in this era of Toyota were very robust. The wandering and pulling to one side is almost certainly the tracking, these have a fairly complex suspension system and they do tend to get very wayward of the tracking is out. A set of decent tyres and getting the wheels balanced properly will make a huge amount of difference to how the car drives as these are quite fussy about what tyres they're run on...

    • @gosportjamie

@@jeffruggles1068 That's good to hear. These Toyotas weren't the most interesting cars but they were pleasant enough to drive and the high spec ones were very well equipped with nice, useful extras like cruise control. They're also rapidly getting pretty rare now as a lot are taking their last trip to the scrap yard. But one of these would make a great starter "classic" for someone who only really has space for one vehicle and so needs something they can use reliably on a daily basis while also enjoying tinkering with, and they're ideal for that as they're generally pretty easy to work on and hugely reliable, plus the chances of parking next to another one in the supermarket car park is pretty small not too. It has to be said that these earlier versions with the engine carried over from the Carina E are probably the pick of the bunch as it's overall a better engine than the VVTi units that replaced them...

The thing about these sorts of cars is that they are built to provide sensibly priced cars for families and to those of us who are petrol heads they appear really boring and tend to get a bad press because they don't excite the motoring press in the same way a that a Golf GTi or a Civic type R might. Not everybody is interested in cars and simply need reasonably priced reliable cars and whilst personally find a lot of Toyota products quite boring there is no denying that they are excellent if a little uninteresting.

Definitely give yours some tlc. Get the tracking ans balancing done, do what you need to do with the brakes (might be disc warpage ir wear), re-gas the A/C and you've got a friend for life.

The air con still works on my S reg Avensis, but it handles like a bucket of rice pudding. It's only done 45k, and I've replaced all the usual suspects like the suspension top mounts / bearings, anti roll bar bushes, drop links, inner tie rods etc and it's still horrible. Any suggestions other than scrapping it gratefully received.

    But
Do you spend £200 on refurbishing the wheels, £100 on discs and pads, £240 on quality tyres,£60 air con regas, £40 on brake fluid change,
It needs a new headlight (£30 if you can find one) and then the bodywork ,bottle of back to black £13 should sorry the trims.
