TMT is short for “Thermo Mechanical Treatment”, a process using both heat treatment as well as mechanical deformation applied to construction bars to enhance their tensile strength, weldability and stress resistance.
HYSD is short for “High Yielding Strength Deformed” bars.
The processes applied to TMT and HYSD bars differ resulting in different properties and quality in these two types of bars.
TMT bars are a high strength variety produced from low carbon steel by the quenching of the surface layer of the bar. The resulting pressure changes the crystal structure of the surface layer of the bar turning it into martensite and hence shrinks it. Martensite is a very hard crystal structure of steel and is highly durable.
The shrinkage applies pressure to the core of the bar and tempers it to form more ductile crystal structures in the inner layers of the bar. Hence TMT bars have a variation in the structure with tougher martensite in the surface layer, martensite and the bainite in the intermediate layer and a tough but ductile ferrite and pearlite core.
This variation in the micro structure of a TMT bar makes it highly suitable for high quality highway construction work. Since they are free of surface defects TMT bars are much better at withstanding torsional stress making them highly corrosion resistant compared to lower grades of steel construction bars.
HYSD bars are produced by the mechanical twisting of the steel bars right after casting, hence resulting in surface flaws. This step lowers the overall strength resistance of the HYSD bars.
