Great video. Here’s a tip. You should plant the cotton 3-4 inches into the dirt so the roots can reach the water. Tie a weight to the end in the water so it doesn’t come out
Thank you for your brilliant idea, I was just worrying about my son’s sunflowers and my bonsai plants. Since we are going away in August for a week. Thank you
I am really enjoying your channel which I discovered recently. You and I have a lot of the same interests so it's wonderful to watch your videos. I am unable to do a lot of the things I used to do due to an illness, but now at least I have more time to watch RUclips videos while recuperating. Haha. I am also of Pinoy heritage so, for me, this is like visiting a friend.
Wow....salamat kabayan! Nice to meet my fellow Filipinos here in youtube! Thanks for watching....and subscribing too. Hope you'll find more enjoyable videos in my channel.
Thank you for sharing. Last summer I planted six geraniums on the hot west side. I carried a gallon of water to each plant every day. This will be a great problem solver.
Gardening is a healthy activity. For me, it's like a therapy. I Enjoy seeing your videos. Your new friend here, hope to see you around, thank you for sharing, stay connected!
i am always looking for a less expensive way to water. I was just looking at drip irrigation systems. Thanks for this explanation I will be working on it tomorrow.
I like how you have all your trees planted in pots. Where do you buy your pots from? How often do you have to fill the bottles in this size pot? Thanks
Great advice! I wonder whether a pinch of apple cider vinegar OR peroxide (never use those two ingredients together) would help to keep the water from becoming moldy.
Yes, it has been working for me for years now. Just watch on the cloth...once the water doesnt transfer,,,then change the cloth/wick> THanks for watching
Nice with this method, plants don’t get to much water or to less… if you collect the rainwater in a barrel and autofill your “bottles” with a dripping system would be very nice. Better for your plants aswel instead of tap water
Yes more videos please. Love to watch them and to see you vlogging. :)
Hi May, very interesting video. Thanks….just one question…doesn’t the water get hot around noon time a When the sun is at its brightest. I’m also in California and the sun can be scorching. Will wait for your reply, many thanks again.
Hi Maria Corazon....nope, the water doesnt get that hot to burn the plants. Altho you have to refill it more often during those scorching weathers here in Socal....and be mindful of the "wick" . Thanks for watching
Is this system gravity dependent? In other words do the bottles have to be at the level of the topsoil line? Can I place the bottle below the top of the planter tops?
Not really...these are all on top of the soil inside my containers. But yes, you can also bury the bottle a little as long as the water comes out from the 'wick' or cotton cloth Thanks for watching
Im using it for every trees and plants l have, so why not with the tomatoes? Yes, runs all day until the water runs out. If it runs out...then the wicking system works well. Thanks for watching!
It depends.....I just refill them whenever l water the plants, every other day during the very hot summer, and 2-3x a wk during colder days. This will just keep the dirt moist, but you still have to water the plants. Thanks for watching
Hi there! Where do you find the hanging baskets that are on your grow buckets? I think that would be a perfect place to keep the water reservoir. Does it matter if the gallon jug is off to the side or on the ground next to the pot? How important is positioning of the water source? Thank you so much for this video!
I think l got them from Aldi store, can't remember exactly. The positioning of the jug doesnt really matter...what matters is the cloth that will transcend the water from the jug to the dirt. Its like osmosis. Altho l suggest that the jug should be higher than the dirt. Be sure to use cotton fabric, and change it once it is soiled or dirty. Just try to experiment on it. Once the water stops from transferring, then time to change the favric
Hi May. I tried your DIY self watering system but I noticed that the drips come very infrequent as I checked it the next day. Water drops are only about 2x in a minute which is very little water going into my plants. Can you help me to make this work? Many thanks.
It mainly depends on the kind of fabric that you use. There is no scientific explanation to this but a plain method of osmosis...or the transfer of water . Please look for a cotton fabric, so water can transfer easily. THanks!
Does the water jug have to be in the plant? CAN THE WATER SOURCE be on the ground or does it need to be even.....help....I am trying to do this system to flowers in pots that are full of flowers.....
I find it more practical for the jug to be in the pot so the water can flow easily to the soil. You dont want it running too long, coz the heat might stop the flow of the water running because it will dry up the wick. But try to do some experiment, so you will know what does best to your plants
@@may.africaI saw your video ...I tried it with cotton ..denim...soft denim...but the end part near the root about 3 inches dries ...its gal bottles I am using...and its outdoors in the sun...I live in the caribbean...what advice can you give...I trying different cotton based fabric to see what works best
That's what l've been using all year long. But of course, this wont replace watering them...it will just help the soil to keep moist. Thanks for watching
Hi, how often did you water your plants, and how often do you water your plants now? Does this process eliminate the watering routine or I still need to water my plants occasionally... Will this wicking system give sufficient moist for my potted plants to survive without extra watering. What's your thought?
Hello my friend....as l explained in my video....you still have to water your plants in the pot regularly. This will just keep the soil moist in between your watering, and those days you forget or busy to water your plants. Specially this summer, watering is a must. This will just help them not to dehydrate. I hope this helps.
It all depends on whatever empty plastic containers you have. The water will depend on the weather, and the wick or cloth that you will use. Just try to watch it for the first few days, and you will know when to refill your empty bottles.
Depends really on the weather and the condition of the shirt/fabric. Some fabric transfers the water easily, some not. In my case, its normally 4-5 days. Thanks for watching.
This will just keep the soil moist. Di na kailangan ng hose....effective naman siya. Kaya lang kailangan lang palitan yung wick pag madumi na. Thanks for watching
Wives, before shredding one of your husband's old shirts, please make sure that it's not one of his favorites. Men tend to grow very attached to old, comfy shirts.
Pero as l said....kailangan pa ring magdilig.....kung baga eh eh this will just keep the soil moist. Salamat at panood my friend.
So don't watch the whole thing. There, solved it for you. Do you have a shorter video made that I can watch? Sorry if I come across as rude, but your comment was rude and unnecessary

Thanks for the tip!
Save the caps to your milk jugs, etc and drill a hole large enough to fit your wick. Screw it back onto the jug and solve the mosquito problem too. 😊

Thanks for watching. I have a supplier of pots l go to near our place.
It would take 2-3 days before l refill the bottles...depends on the weather
I love this idea. if I go on vacation for 4 days will this keep my plants alive?
Not unless the weather goes really hot! But it will keep the soil moist for days. Give it a try before you go on a vacation

Hi..Thanks for watching. You can just replace th wick, easier than washing them.

Yes, l hope it will help keep your plants hydrated. If you have a bigger plant, then maybe you can add a bigger jug, or 2jugs maybe?

How often do you have to change the cotton fabric ?
It really depends on the fabric......sometimes once a month or longer
How big those containers r ?
Wonderful 💐👌💖
Thanks for watching. Been in your house
Where I'm at the water evaporates before it gets down the wick.
Oh no! That hot in your place? Where at?
I don't drink 4 liters of milk, or juice or water jugs, how do I make my own? Maybe a paper mache?
Any plastic container will do for that matter. Or cans and bottles, that can retain water
works perfectly: different sizes for different plants
Can the plastic bottle be placed on the ground?
As long as the water travels from the bottle to the pot, that's ok!
WOW great creative watering man thanks for sharing tips God bless po.
Thanks for watching.....nakikain na ako sa bahay mo
I'm going to use my wife's shirts just to bring balance to the world.😉

This will just keep the soil moist in between your watering, and those days you forget or busy to water your plants. Specially this summer, watering is a must. How long until you have to add more water?
...well it really depends on the weather and the fabric/shirt that you put in there. Average is 2-3days
Salamat, po!
Maraming salamat po sa pagdalaw.
How many litres are the bottles? How many days can the watering last?
It all depends on whatever empty plastic containers you have. The water will depend on the weather, and the wick or cloth that you will use. Just try to watch it for the first few days, and you will know when to refill your empty bottles.
👍🌳
Definitely I'll cut my husband's tshirt bcz he talks too much about my plants lol
Lol! Laughed a lot! Just try it and lets see....
