You know, whenever I watched this episode, I always thought of the scene when kryten says that he’s more important than rimmer, and I always thought that it wasn’t true, I mean rimmer is there to keep Dave sane, and that’s more important than anything to lister in the show
I think this my second favorite episode of the whole series. The satire is spot-on, dark, but still funny. Humankind didn't went out of business, because of war or environmental catastrophes, but because nobody couldn't afford to live anymore. It's still satire, but that's how it will end with corporations, if you just let them. Good stuff. And then no RD for quite a while *sniff.*
@@TheAussieBlue Eh, Hershey's is genuinely bad, being too tangy for its own good... But stuff like Baby Ruth, Three Musketeers, and Butterfinger are absolute delights! And I say this as a brit!
It's true. American Chocolate is awful. Though in it's defense many countries have different chocolate tastes that are acquired by it's population making switching to chocolate from another country to be... an experience. The UK for example use more vegetable oil in their chocolate. The US on the other hand use more Butyric acid that that is responsible for the stench of vomit which is the reason why a UK based show and it's producer's tend to make fun of US chocolate. The US have gotten used to it, whereas the UK wince slightly at the mere mention of Hershey's and the odor of their Butyric acid products.
When I saw Dave as an old man in the season teaser (relating to this episode) I thought they might address the old Lister from Future echoes. Like Lister wasn't really 171, but was aged up somehow and eventually changed back. But in the time he was old did the bit from Future Echoes. When all the call backs started happening in the episode I though "They're going for it! They're going for it!" and they didn't do it. Damn!
The whole concept of "paying with time" is already here in the form of free to play games - terrifying concept, especially when mobile games are targeting children. Plus all the "can't see products from rival companies once you're in our ecosystem" - unbelievable there haven't been more programmes exploring these idea's - whether for humour or for a more serious look at a future ruled by mega-corps.
Just so you know. the guy who played Steve is the warm up guy who introduces the actors n such to the crowd. He jokingly stated to Doug Naylor's son (who is Exec-Producer i think) infront of the audience wether or not he could be in and he said ill go and see only to see the Script to find himself in it. I always thought that was quite sweet.
M-Corp was definitely one of the better episodes, my only qualms were that they resolved it a little too easily. I was expecting more of a debate between Kryten and the M-Corp lady, kinda like the denouement of Fathers and Suns.
TMW when you hear M-Corp compared to CAAAPitalism and you realize it was literally a life service, allowing Lister to pay for things with his actual life span.
its just occurred to me that you might like another BBC Sci-fi comedy named 'Hyperdrive' it only had two seasons and unfortunately does not compete with 'Red Dwarf' but still worth a watch and there are enough good laughs from it
That whole thing about M-Corp taking over Earth could've been an important plot point in the series and the perception filter being the reason why they can't find it anymore or what's happened to humanity if the time off your life is being used as payment.
The plot is abit heavy on the commentary. and in a way i feel like the story might have got abit lost in the commentary. i never quite understood how these M-Corp items got on Red Dwarf. they just randomly appear? were they always there but were invisible? were they transported or materialized created? there is usually an in-universe science for this stuff but this time i guess the writer just left it out. One other aspect i think should have been avoided is saying Earth was taken over by M-Corp. You probably can guess earth just had their own Skynet based fate.
Yeah good episode, if a little undercooked. One can’t help what vintage Dwarf would have done with the concept. A concept that definitely says EA. Did I mean EA? I meant a fascistic overlording society that gets powerful by doing the bare minimum No wait I DID mean EA
Great video. I thought this episode had a lot in common with "Fathers and Suns." In both episodes Lister's life is endangered by an AI that communicates through a female avatar and takes its function to dangerous extremes, and in both episodes said AI is defeated by using its function against it.
@@Cyborcat Nobody can be expected to think of everything. I only realised it quite recently. Anyway, I love your Red Dwarf Vlogs, they're funny and insightful. I look forwards to seeing your thoughts on the upcoming special.
i enjoyed this episode. i didn't like the way up to this point series 12 had felt like some sort of comic relief does red dwarf with all the guest stars they rammed in. now it's possible the woman who played the m corp bitch queen is famous and i just don't know her but all i saw was the character rather than the actor as in earlier episodes and it helped a lot. she was one of my favourite red dwarf characters. genuinely sinister but kinda sexy too. i'm surprised dave didn't try to get off with her like he did with that simulant whose ship they'd totaled.
