Good doc, but when you're playing the sound of an unknown animal, you should probably stop playing the background music so we can hear it unfettered
My family would have a summer week up at Kayak Point, and we went out on a small boat with an outboard motor one morning. There were both sea lions and otter out there. This was when I was 6 years old, and that was in 1965.
The story of having to re-stock otters is an exaggerated one.
I just want to follow that Irish fella around all the time, listen to him weave whimsical yarns about about the surrounding environs and what potentially lurks in them while I'm taking pulls from my hip flask. *glug glug* "What's that you say?there's Banshees on moors? I'm allll ears. *glug* "Let's go hunt leprechauns, I'm 'bout that life! Tallyho!"
It'd be dope.
kek
No "Tallyho" in Ireland,foo!
Me too, but please don't tell him I'm descended from the English.
Oh, don't bother the Irish about leprechauns! They aren't cute!!! You will find that over there the L-word applies to the world's most obnoxious poltergeist, an unseen entity that will follow you home if you muck about the countryside where you don't belong and then make your life unbearably miserable. Please do not invoke them!
That irish guy is the best storyteller /cryptid hunter ive ever seen and can weave a tale like no other. Id love to go on an adventure with him or better yet have him read me bed time stories. Excellent at what he does and so intriguing and mystifying
most irish are very good at storytelling cuz its in their culture, oral history and lore are their speciality.
he has such a dry sense of humor i find hilarious
I hope the Cryptzoologist is doing myth and legends tours, he would make a killing! Awesome dude, made me laugh
He plays the roll of his life. 🤣
He ruled this episode! I'm still giggling! "Let's go, fearing nothing!" 😍😂

A huge walrus arrived on the Irish coastline this week, far from its normal habitat. Thought to have drifted into the Atlantic on an ice floe and headed to the nearest land....this was a great documentary!
Yeah I heard about it
I love this cryptozoologist. He’s like a made up character
I was thinking he should have his own show lol.
He reminds me of Merlin from the movie Excalibur.
He sounds like an Irish Richard Dawkins
@Olly the Animal Bloke I do talk pretty much like that.
He is great ☺☺
I've seen otters in the west of Ireland that were really big, about 6 feet including tail. I just can't see a self sustaining species of giant otters living there without being recorded more often. That said, who would've thought we'd ever see a walrus in Kerry?
I feel dobharchu may be an occasional mutant rather than an unknown species.
i was just thinking if you saw an 8 foot long otter at a distance would you know it or would you just say that was an otter its hard to estimate size of something with a familiar shape at a distance in the water you might see a 10 foot otter and not bat an eye maybe think it was a big otter maybe your 6 foot otter was a 10 footer lol who knows
@@jasontipton8430 that's a good point I watch birds a lot and it can be difficult to judge size at a distant. The otter in this instance was dead on a road so had to drive right past it. If it was in the middle of a lake it would've been hard to estimate its size alright
Agreed. I once saw a seal on the coast, realising later it was a sea otter. Very hard to judge distance and size looking out to sea or the sky. I was also thinking about seals at the time as I was about to fish and didn't want one around. If you see something unfamiliar ones preconceptions work on you and are more likely to perceive that thing as a threat and bigger than reality. Otters can stand up on their hind legs and I've had one hiss at me as described in the video. Also the Irish are great story tellers and prone to exaggeration. Some of the stories that go around about individuals and other things are absolutely outrageous and repeated without question.
The cryptozoologist had LITERALLY explained that the Dobhar-Chu, if real, is mostly on the coast and ONLY goes to the lake to drink freshwater, which explains why it is seldom seen.
For example, in Loch Ness, seals ARE known to enter through the River Ness and are also seldom seen. So it isn't too improbable for a giant, unknown species of otter to do something similar before leaving back to its preferred habitat.
Also, judging from eyewitness testimony, the Dobhar-Chu ISN'T sociable as known species of otters, either being solitary or living in pairs.
The guy with the grey hair is amazing at speaking in a spooky tone. I like him. He needs to work in voice overs.
Mike Akers he was my primary school teacher. He told the most amazingly gripping stories in class. Quite a character!

The illustration the eyewitness artist made reminds of a leopard seal. They are huge , ill tempered, and predators. Hence the name leopard seal. They look a lot like an otter but are 7- 12 feet long and can weigh as much as 1300 pounds.
Leopard seals are scary! They look very Nessie-like too.
Ronan Coghlan, is awesome, love his sense of humor and out look, could listen to him speak for hours
This cryptozoologist needs to be the damn host.
His ability to verbalize mystery is very fitting with this genre of entertainment.
He could seriously narrate ghost stories and scare the heck outta ya!
This video was shot in the Republic of Ireland, not Northern Ireland as the narrator states.
I could listen to Ronan Coghlan talk all day.
The South American Giant Otter is a known to science creature and reaches a length of 6 feet. While it is native to the Amazon, who's to say it hasn't somehow wound up in Ireland?

The cryptozoologist is like a younger version of Deckard Cane from diablo telling stories of the mystical and dark creatures that roam the world. If he said "Stay a while and listen" I would without hesitation
Obviously a breed of giant otters. leftover from Ireland's Prehistoric Mega Fauna
I get so caught up in the music and the beauty of the land and people that I forget what this program is really about!
That recording was of an actual otter. Their screams sound identical.
Did you not even watch the video? He said that he played it for biologists and they were not able to identify it. You can't speak for yourself.
Leopard seals in the Northern Hemisphere?
@J. C. That's no way related to that guy's bewilderment.
In the 1960s and 70s it was common in british wealthy people to take some exotic cats from Amazonas and Africa to their home. As government forbid it, many of them released their beasts into the wild in Great Britain. Since then great cats are spotted from time to time in the wilderness.
Look up giant Amazon river otters. They’re not altogether the most pleasant of animals. This Dobhar-chú could be an even larger species than that. The giant otters aren’t your average cuddly critters...regularly fight jaguars, anaconda and caimans.
My own feeling is that the Dobharchu occurs as an occasional mutant.
I love all these shiver videos! I get a much larger understanding, and appreciation of folk lore, people who say they have seen a creature, and the beautiful landscapes. The cryptologist is really cheeky. I would love to hang out with him, any time anywhere and I'll bring my own flask of whisky. The narration is also great, clear well spoken, smooth & calm.
Look up the alaska osterman. The natives re terrified of it. It mimics voices and everything
Interesting ! Have you ever heard of the dogman ?
I must have watch over 100 interviews on the RUclips channel called dogman encounters. Be warned very freaky
As a rehabber of wild mustelids, even little ones like mink and weasels are ferocious. Otters are that way as well. I would not be suprised one bit if there is some truth to this.
I could listen to these Irish people all day.💖
Outstanding content! Is there anyway to maybe cut back on the trumpet/ saxophone interludes back to back?
There could possibly be an old bloodline of otter that has remained from when they were larger .
This is really well done. Love all the interviewees and the story is very interesting and plausible.
I always immediately look up the prehistoric ancestor of whatever "real" animal they compare the cryptid to, and sure enough, there is a man to wolf sized otter ancestor that was a top predator back in it's day called "enhydriodon dikikae". Now of course extinction and all that, but I tend to not believe that every single thing went extinct as we have things like coelacanth, crocodiles, and the Tuatara of new zealand that are remnants of those exact time eras. I looked up videos of otters screaming, and it sounds very much like the audio this guy had recorded when he was camped out.
If the creature has been seen in the area for such a long time,
then there be a breeding population…
The cryptozoologist is awesome! What a character
Wow, that guy comes across as a true seanchaí
I do not doubt that this creature exists in one way or another. However, the fact that the sightings of it dates back so far diminishes the possibility of it being a naturally occuring animal. Else surely there should be remains of it found. Or actual droppings - anything. This creature more reasonably falls in the category of paranormal or supernatural. Simply not quite explained. But does exist in one way or another.
Would love to visit now, Ronans an absolute legend
Oh my god! I just watched a program the other day about the same exact creatures in Alaska, but with a different name!
I love the cryptozoologist, I could listen to him tell stories for hours on end. Snuggle up all cozy with some cocoa on a rainy day and just listen to him tell all kinds of stories
Yes ma'am
The Crypto guy is "Hamming it up" pretty well.
Looks exactly like a wayward Leopard Seal...A fierce predator.
Annoying that you'd go to such trouble without realising what country you're in, or not for that matter... It's the West of Ireland. Northern Ireland is a different country and a whole different story altogether.
We knew where we were. The narrator of the piece oobviously didn't.
I was hoping someone would comment on this. Connemara is quite rural. But personally I’d check out Donegal. If this program were truly set in the North, Donegal likely has its own scary creatures. Anywhere that is isolated by mountains, political borders and minimal roads must harbor things. Lots of livestock to pick off. Probably more animals than humans there. Love it but very rugged.
@@erikm8372 The dobharchu was certainly reputed to live in Donegal in days agone.

I love these videos, but the most disturbing part of this one was the “church” not allowing unbaptized children to be buried in “consecrated” ground.
They are foul unbelievers, cursed, bound for hell.
I wonder if at any stage they question this. I also wonder considering one of their most worshiped persons was born out of wedlock to another man. So going on that tradition it makes me wonder if Jesus's second coming might have had him end up in the sewers.
@@jquest43 Who are?
This practice has been discontinued.
The church could be, and can be, quite backwards.
Interesting story. In Cymraeg/Welsh one of the dialects call otters Dŵr ci the main word used is dyfwrgi or water dogs looks and sounds similar word to this creature. The dobharchú (if i spelled that correctly).
They both derive from Indo-European roots.
Every story or folklore has an ounce of truth to them, somewhere.
Omey island isn’t in the north west of Ireland, it’s the west, north west is in another province… omey island is unbelievable and definitely worth a walk out, just don’t get caught, out and have to swim back. FYI some of the locals put rocks in the way of the road… so difficult to get around by car.

It’s really not uncommon for artic walrus to come to Ireland from Greenland
Yes it is. There's only ever been like 5 sightings of a walrus in Ireland ever. Also how tf does a walrus look anything like an otter?
I love how the name of the creature sounds similar to Dovahkiin from skyrim😅

Wouldve been a blurry one probably.
Connely again?? He saw the Piest and claims to have observed it for hours but i didnt know he saw the Giant Otter too. On the other hand, Connelly is probably a widespread name there
people forget that animals like the gorilla whas considerd a legend untill it whs found that long ago we still discover large animals every now and then it is not impossible for unknown species to exist...
The Cryptozoologist is the most amazing storyteller ive ever heard!🏆👍☘💚
Of all the lake monsters, Dobhar-chu is definitely one of the more believable ones.
It may be an otter suffering from what's known as "gigantism" or probably a new subspecies/species of known otter that are larger in size.
We may not have the proof that it exists, but the sightings are consistent and have been happening since centuries ago. Maybe it is a species of otter that is now extinct.
There was once a giant otter that lived on the island of Sardinia and is estimated to grow to 2.7 meters in length. However, the Sardinian giant otter lived in Italy and not Ireland or Scotland.
The last time I brought my stuffed pet otter to a bar, I was asked to leave...
Alaska has their own Otterman legend too...
Yeah they do
I think it was some sort of seal or walrus. Don't know to common they are, but if they are not native then perhaps it was lost.... whales have been seen in the Thames for example.

This is a interesting show I subscribed let’s see what they got
Got to love that Ronan, kinda strikes me like the guy with a pint of Guinness in one hand and a bottle of Four Roses in the other. He has more than a touch of the Blarney to him.
NOW OTTERS DO HAVE A SQUEAKY SOUNDING UTTERANCE
"There are huge piles of dung here, from a large animal" he says as he walks across a cow pasture...
Perceptive, ain't I?
Whats the point in watching a documentary that is so inaccurate, it doesn't even get the country right!
The Narrator says Omey Island is in Northern Ireland.
Omey Island is in County Galway, which is in Ireland, not in Northern Ireland, there is a difference. Even the map on the video, designates the difference.
The witness says the Cryptozoic animal he saw was the size of a man. Well the Atlantic grey seals are common on the west coast of Ireland, they can be over 7 feet long and weigh 500 pounds.
I've seen Otter lying dead on the side of the road, near lakes in Wicklow and they're the size science suggests, but I've seen them in groups alive and well, and they would seem the size of a large dog at least....
The narrator's script made that error. We knew where we were all right.
My thought was that it seemed very similiar to the Stellars sea-lions we have in Pacific waters of North America, but Western Ireland is of course on the Eurasian side of the Atlantic. Stellars' are HUGE! Especially right next to them. Unfamiliar with seal and sea-lion species in the North Atlantic, but it sounds like a seal, or sea-lion, is what the Corcorans encountered that night. In the dark, it would be quite frightening.
I apologise for the narrator's mistake.
I wonder if a sea otter could have come across somehow from North America, since you do get anomalous but natural animals occasionally, like the walrus? They're sizeable.
As sea otters are only known in the Pacific, it's unlikely one would end up in Ireland.
The first guy murdered his wife and blamed it on the creature.
As for the rest, it’s likely a misplaced pod of walruses, leopard seals, or giant otters.
Oh no its a big seal
in Alaska there is a creature just like this called the Kushtaka , a giant otter man !
