Well, I did say it seemed impossible, and it was! An article I'd read about Zilbalodis really downplayed his previous, smaller animation projects, making it seem like he'd come out of left field. He did, however, make some short films in a somewhat more hand-made, personal style prior to teaching himself Maya to make Away. His achievement going from that level to creating a full length animated feature film, all by himself, is still astounding. I'm watching some of his earlier animations now, and they are well worth your time, particularly "Inaudible" which is closer in style to Away than some others. Cheers.

Yesssss, thank you for covering this! You’re quickly becoming one of my favourite RUclipsrs. You have a great appreciation and knowledge for film and animation.
Also your voice is awesome, really soothing and calm. I could easily see you doing audio books.

Oh, wow, thank you!! That's one of the nicest compliments I've ever gotten! I'm usually very self conscious about how I sound, so that's really nice feedback. Much appreciated.

love how you present this movie. Also the production level of your video is soothing (I love how watching you speak has a soothing effect; the background going from orange, warm, to blue, cool and the organic wooden furniture in the middle) ... all of it is amazing... great work! ❣

Thank you for your deep and human review of our Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis film. I'm from Latvia, and we are extremely proud of his "Flow's" incredible success, of how it speaks to the souls of people all around the world without any human words.
But even I haven't seen Gint's previous film "Projām" ("Away") yet. I will definitely watch it, because not only Gint's extraordinary animator's handwriting and special message, but also your deep annotation moved me to tears. It helped me understand something important about myself.
By the way, No 1. The Latvian name "Projām" really means "Away". But the association of the English word with a way, road or path gives an additional dimension to the understanding of this film. I hadn't thought about it.
By the way, No.2. Gint's last name Zilbalodis, which is a problem for many, but which you pronounced correctly, translates as "blue dove". It suits his movie characters. 🐦😊

Oh, thank you so much! Hearing that from you has made me extremely happy. I hope you will enjoy Away, I've been watching several of his short films and I really think he is a type of genius of visual storytelling. I'm eager to watch his career continue. Cheers to you!

Good movie review dude! 😀👍 And you also pronounced the film director's last name correctly. 🌝 I hope the Flow gets an Oscar. 🐈‍⬛

Thank you very much! I was hoping I'd said it correctly, as I've heard it said different ways. I am hoping he gets the Oscar, I've become a big fan!

The original title in Latvian is Projām, that could also be translated as “absent”.

Wow. A filmmaker after my own heart. Someone who figured it all out by himself. I actually was a beta tester for Logic when it was still with a company called Emagic before Apple bought it. I’m really interested in watching this because the thought of a film being emotionally great without a word really interests me. Just the whole thing that you described sounds pretty unbelievable. Anyway, thanks for another great review.

Thanks, Rock. If you wind up seeing it, would love to know how it went for you. I started watching it on Kanopy a while back without knowing anything about it and I turned it off quickly because my "oh no, it's too cheap and different" alarm went off. Just wasn't in the mood. I'm ashamed of that now! If you get to chapter 2 you may be hooked... Cheers.
