    I’m from Daytona and dad took me to Flagler and it was 7-8ft. I was used to 2-3ft. I was crying unable to pass the break and wiped out and ended up sitting on the sand feelings defeated and I’m just now going back to it with a foamie instead of a short board. I’m just so scared of feeling so tiny and feeling the force that I felt at that moment being pulled and ripped off my board. Even back at home but the reminder how you can hold you breathe helped a lot lol idk why. It just was a wake up of duh…it takes a few seconds for a white water to fizzle lol.

    Bali is intense
    Had multiple leashes broke on me, and had swim far back into shore, out of breath, thought I was gonna drown.
    Got caught in a wave and it kept carrying me forward and pushing me under.
    Never had these issues in Cornwall, Devon or Fuerteventura.
    First time surfing without a wetsuit and less buoyancy I guess

      100% true the wetsuit gives you some extra buoyancy.

      Bali is intimidating! Paddling out and seeing a seven foot waves headed toward you... all you can do is go under and wait.. then the next one comes maybe 10 seconds later and do it again. It's incredibly intimidating for me.

    Might be too late but my problem is getting past whitewash and getting out the back to clean waves cus I’m such a small guy it’s intimidating even at only 4-5 feet thanks.

    • @surfcompanions7973
      @surfcompanions7973  Год назад

      Yes it is intimidating FOR SURE. What I would recommend is to surf when its around the edge what you feel comfortable with and stay there with that size to gain confidence. Once you feel safe and in control try a surf day when its slightly bigger then your comfort zone. So you will step up your comfort zone. That helped me with surfing in bigger waves. Thanks for your comment, Daniel

      @@surfcompanions7973 I love this comment! I can swim but when I get to where I can no longer stand that's when the panic creeps in and I want to turn back. My fear is getting crushed by waves and not being able to make it back in easily. Just going to take baby steps and expand my comfort zone, I guess.

      To help against your fear is actively training your ankles with a trainer, so you know of your body that you prepared your ankle to be stable! I would recommend active training for better stability and strenght;) hope I could help. Have fun in the water!

    Hello! thanks for the video! How can I deal with the fear of getting dragged for the wave and hitting rocks or reefs at the bottom?

    • @surfcompanions7973
      @surfcompanions7973  5 месяцев назад +1

      First. Make sure that you know where the reef and stones are. Also on every tide, watch at total lowtide also to see it.
      2. where a wetsuit so you feel more protected instead of knowing „if you fall on the reef“ that its not immediately your skin.
      3. get a helmet for surfing if there are dangerous rocks and reefs. Safety first
      4. when you fall than fall light a sea star so flat,so you won‘t sink to much to the ground.
      Thanks for your comment;)they are even more little tips but I hope that helped already;)

    I nearly drowned last year surfing but luckily my friend Was there to pull me out. We’ve been taking it slow getting back into surfing, I paddled out back for the first time yesterday then paddles straight back in but small steps I guess. I’m more comfortable swimming in the sea compared to with my board and get scared about waves crashing on top of me … any tips ?

    • @surfcompanions7973
      @surfcompanions7973  2 года назад +2

      I have a similar experience with my first surf. Went into double head high waves and didn't know anything. MY tip: you should only surf in waves you can manage and practice on your duck dive and turtle role techniques. Once you feel comfortable with your surfboard, in control then you can go in bigger surf. Second tip: Learn to read the waves really good and study the sets and set breaks BEFORE entering the water:) Hope I could help, cheers Daniel.

    I just started surfing last year an I'm very scared of rip tides, as on my last time out last year a rip tide started to pull me out and no matter how hard I tried my feet were dragged through the sand and the waves kept crashing in on me in the end I got on my board and paddled every wave to get back to shore, I couldn't swim sideways for shear numbers if people in the sea, not a good note to end on so this year I'm going in already scared any advice?

    • @surfcompanions7973
      @surfcompanions7973  2 года назад +1

      Hey elizabeth, first of all if you panic then always stay on your surfboard. You will get dragged more from the Rip current if you swim. And if you are dragged out in the channel try to paddle & swim 90degrees out of the channel ( which is in most cases parralell to the beach)

    • @surfcompanions7973
      @surfcompanions7973  2 года назад +1

      The current can be a scary thing,but once you know what to do you don‘t have to be scared. Another tip is, never surf alone. Always surf with friends or friendly surfers. If you have more questions feel free to contact us threw instsgram directly;)

      @@surfcompanions7973 Thank you for answering :) love the video , yes once I was on my surfboard rather than trying to walk forward on my feet it did seem allot easier to get back, I'll make sure to stick closer to my friend next time , think I was out in conditions too difficult for me, as I'd only spent 3 days on a foamy board, and then was suddenly given an intermediate board on the 4th day by the surf hire because the waves were bigger, think I should have said I'm not ready.

    What can you do about the empty stomach feeling when you drop from steep waves? I feel like I’m going to wipe out every time

    • @surfcompanions7973
      @surfcompanions7973  Год назад

      Hey Laura, first of all sorry for the late answer. Thanks for your comment. Empty stomach feeling will always be there in a sense, so what you can do is first train it in smaller waves (smaller free falls) and then work yourself up to bigger waves. So your body is getting used of this feeling. Its the same with riding a bike the first time it feels amazing, wow, crazy, but once you've done it over and over again your body is getting used to it. It could also happen that your timing or something in your positioning could be better, but that I can only judge if you would have coaching with me. Hope that helped a bit. Greetings Daniel

    So my fear is- big waves, i want to surf green waves but im scared and im scared of sea life like octopus but here where I live there isn't sharks.
    And by the way I have a twin and he is really good at surfing

      @surfcompanions7973  2 года назад

      Hey Sofia, sorry for my late answer. I was really happy about your comment!!!:) Yes I can understand that you were scared when you were young like that. Like I explained in the video its important first to ask yourselWHAT you are scared of. You know what you are scared of so NOW you can work on it. For example if you know you are scared of "Bigger" waves and only go surfing in smaller waves for the first session to gain some confidence. And then step for step maybe bigger, but never suddenly a Big step from example chest high wave to double overhead. Take small steps:) And if you train already in smaller surf you can practice to "LOVE" the step, because those are the waves you want to surf. Those set waves are the quality waves which we want to surf:) Step by step Sofia!Thanks so much about your comment. For more content you can follow us also on instagram. I am going to first try surf this summer (if covid situazione allows it).
    My main fear is: sharks.
    My second fear: not being able to return to the shore.

    • @surfcompanions7973
      @surfcompanions7973  3 года назад +1

      To your first fear: check out the area WHERE you surf. If there are sharks. A funny statistic is: more people are dying because of taking a selfie than by a shark attack.
      Fear 2: Check the currents and the rips. So the waves are bringing you always back to the shore. If you want to go back to the shore: stay in the whitewater in front of the waves.

But I can still hold my breathe for 1min 40 in calm conditions but under pyshical exhaustion about 10 seconds lol I'm not worried about board hitting me. Top fear is drowning that tops sharks and even pissing locals off lol
