I love how Happiness Patrol didn't even try to hide it's low budget. They just leaned right into it and almost made it like a stage play.

@@rachelcookie321 Not even close, I would think. No control over weather and light, probably literal tons of heavy 80s equipment to schlep around... And the rest of that season already had a lot of location shooting.
Intended or not, it seems to add to the idea of this colony as an oppressive and claustrophobic bubble. A ceiling hanging over everything

I've always had a soft-spot for Happiness Patrol. Yes, it's cheap and camp, but also deceptively dark and bittersweet. The soundtrack is lovely - reminds me of Resident Evil 1 on the PlayStation - lots of atmospheric strings and creepiness, spliced with occasional jaunty moments of fake happiness, and the harmonica is icing on the cake. Love Helen-A as a villain, love the ending, love the "sniper speech", and I even love the Kandyman - a psychotic robot that flops between petulant child-like tantrums vs very creepy serial killings. Remembrance and Greatest Show may be my top picks of S25, but Happiness Patrol is no slouch.
It's certainly one of my Favourite 7th Doctor stories for sure.

I recently calculated my favourite 7th stories in order, and I believe Happiness Patrol is 4th - beaten only by Curse of Fenric (my No.1 story of all time), Remembrance (an absolute classic 10/10 banger), and Greatest Show. Three of them scratch the "Creepy Doctor Who" itch, and Remembrance is a fantastic recommendation to anyone who's trying to get into classic who. A great intro to 7+Ace - not to mention excellent pacing, action, and Dalek shenanigans.
@@RopeDrink For me it's a Tie Between Ghost Light and Battlefield as my favourite 7th Doctor Story.
@@nekusakura6748Ghost Light is after Happiness Patrol in my list. It's a wonderfully atmospheric story and it scratches the 'creepy Doctor Who' itch, which I always appreciate. I call it "Doctor Who in the Resident Evil mansion", because if you replaced the husks with literal zombies, it would be strikingly similar to RE1 on the playstation - one of my favourite games of that era for sure.
Honestly, there's no 7th Doctor Story I truly dislike - merely stories that I am happier to watch when compared to others. Even the one's I like the least - such as Delta, Silver, Rani - are still 'fun'.
I have one single sentence to say about this Tardis……
“RIVER! MAKE HER BLUE AGAIN!!!!”

I seem to recall reading a novel where someone tried to paint the TARDIS and the paint just slid off.

Over the last few months I started re-watching Sylvester McCoy's episodes as Doctor Who. He really was underrated as Doctor Who. It's sad that the show ended (for a while) when he was the Doctor. His wit & comical timing were awesome.
This is the first time I've seen anything by him really and now im intrigued!
The only Doctor I met in person!
@@Luvcatz88ooo you should really watch more of him, especially him and Ace. They're my favorite Classic TARDIS team. Ace is awesome and Sylvester is just...ugh so good! Their onscreen chemistry is fantastic, with the Doctor almost serving as an adopted parental figure to Ace. I'd definitely recommend Remembrance of the Daleks, since it has the iconic moment of Ace beating a Dalek with a baseball bat! But if you want to see Ace's introduction, she first shows up in Dragonfire.
Each of the Doctors have nicknames based on their costumes or mannerisms, "Dandy, Hobo, Bohemian, etc."
The 7th Doctor was known as the Sorcerer. He could sometimes make people tell him things as though they were hypnotised or put them to sleep with just a touch!
Plus, he WAS also "Merlin"!
He was my favourite (until the 8th), but even he couldn't fight his greatest enemy. Moving the show to a Wednesday night and putting it up against soap opera rival, "Coronation Street"!

@@brendannahor1460 In "Remembrance of the Daleks" the Doctor healed Ace's leg, and cured a soldier's concussion by "Laying Hands" on them. Yes, he healed by touch!
One of the best Doctor Who stories. Its connotations to Thatcher make it all the more brilliant
"Can't you afford a real gun?" 😂🤣 Ace is the best! I definitely underappreciated her in 1989 when this made it's way to our TV station! My attitude toward her was similar to the Kandyman's attitude to her.
The thing I want to know is;
What would they do if the Tardis decided to un-paint herself?
Assume killjoys had done it, and promptly repaint it, I expect. But since the exterior shell is transient anyway, it will, (and did) end upon dematerialisatoin.
Oh all the Tardis would have to do is activate her force fields and the paint particles would simply drop off.

The Happiness Patrol is IMO one of the best stories in the McCoy era or even the classic series as a whole because of The Kandy Man alone!
From a design-perspective at least, I'm pretty sure most fans consider the Kandy Man to be a ridiculous Doctor Who villain.
@@SPM0717 I definitely thought he was ridiculous at the time. But we live in a post-Boris Johnson _and_ post-Liz Truss era now!

Sheila Hancock was great at conveying how pathetic and almost pitiable Helen A truly was deep down (as an aside, I'd love to see Hancock in a 15th Doctor story at some point).
Ncuti should have this happen to his tardis in an episode maybe tie dye when they drop the 60s a kind of nod to this episode

That's an underappreciated element of their dynamic. Seven+Ace have a lot of chemistry and fun together, but they also unintentionally undermine each other in every single story. He's made it plain that the goal is to get arrested, and pointing out the lack of badges may help achieve that, but she forgets herself and immediately wants to show off her jacket collection, much to his chagrin.

Sylvester McCoy is like the 10th and 11th doctor mixed into one
It wouldn't surprise me at all if McCoy's era was a source of inspiration for Russell T Davies' work on Doctor Who.
Matt Smith's maybe a little but 7 wasn't an insufferable man-child with ADHD like Tennants who is the 11th Doctor, not 10, 10 was Eccleston in the revised Regeneration set by Day of The Doctor., since Hurt's war Doctor was the actual 9th Doctor...

The Happiness Patrol is a phenomenal story and it has some of Sylvester McCoy's best performance as the Doctor

I always get increased blood pressure when someone calls the new "pink tardis" tweet a "barbie reference", it obviously is a nostalgia reference back to the happiness patrol.
(and yes, I know it probably was, but its always fun to pretend that it was a reference to the 7th doctor's era)
