Great video showing how the family react in a thunderstorm. I don't like to be outside when there's lightning and thunder either, so I completely get their reactions. So glad Momotaro was able to catch himself when he slipped on the wet beam. Genki is already a nervous and anxious type, so it was very distressing seeing her so upset. And all Gentaro wanted was to be comforted by his mom in the storm. So glad they were allowed to go inside early.
In the wild they can take shelter... here they are out in the open getting rained on, feeling exposed. It is not their choice to be in this zoo you must consider these things for their well being.

They are not very lucky with these keepers. The keepers may no it is just a thunderstorm and will not automatically kill the apes. But the apes fear it will happen. And they apes are what counts. You can change each keeper. But you cannot change one of the poor apes.
I think the zoo should bring them inside anytime there is lightning in the area. Heck, they stop major sporting events for lightning but the zoo lets the gorillas sit out on steel beams? I seriously hope the zoo has thought about the possibility of lightning strikes and has some kind of system installed to divert them.
My heart goes out to them. This had to be a continuous and loud thunder one after another that they all got afraid. Remember there were other occasions where Genki was protecting both sons and comforted them and Momotaro sit still far from behaving as what we saw in this video running around like crazy. May be the previous thunders were not as bad but this one was really loud and went on and on. I hope the zoo after seeing this video came up with a good plan to protect my beloved gorillas. May God protect the weak and helpless, Amen.
I’m sure the keepers rushed the cleaning and food distribution so they can open doors quickly. No one thought it was about to storm 🤷♀️ . Poor genki was shaking in fear 😢
I really wish they would build them a new place ☹️ this is not right you can tell they are all frightened! I hate them to be out in bad weather they need covered shelter outside! Someplace they can go when they are cleaning or putting food out! Also the outside needs redone more grass more room. Shabani and Haoko place copy one of those. and he almost fell from it being so wet so obviously it’s slippery and NOT safe so change things for them please! I’d contribute this is my favorite silverback 🤗
Why don't they open the doors and let them in since they're fearful of thunder and it creates anxiety for the gorillas? They have 2 separate rooms for them...at least open one room so they can get in and feel safe. watching them afraid and anxious is not amusing nor entertainment. Besides, all those metal beams could be struck by lightening. All of these gorillas were born in zoo's and don't know how to react to thunder since they never experienced it in their natural habitat...so they're afraid of it and have nowhere to go unless the caretakers let them in.
Sad, I think they lock the doors when they are cleaning the room and putting out food for them. They need to build something outside to keep them dry and safe. I hope they do it soon. Very upsetting seeing them so terrified.

Also, all 4 of the gorillas climb up to the ceiling to retrieve food and of course Kintaro likes to hang using one arm and kick his feet...those beams must get very slick & slippery. It would be a real tragedy if one of them loses their grip or footing because of the wet beams.

I love this staff and know they love this family. But, they cannot control $ the Zoo will and can put into building a structure to keep them safe and dry in bad weather. I know many Zoo's are suffering money wise having to shut down with virus. But, im sure they could find a company who would build or donate a shed for them. I just hope they can soon because I hate seeing the Gorillas so stressed because they dont know what the noise means and they are terrified. We humans know and it still scares us, imagine how they feel not knowing. PLEASE KYOTO..Build them a little shed or hut outside that they can go under to at least stay dry when storms hit. Most of us don't understand all the tremendous hard work and preparation and loving care for these wonderful animals💖🥇❗ Everyone worries about them very much in thunderstorms, I'm so glad to know you explained about the safety beams during thunder/lightning so the gorillas will not get hurt❗🤗🦍Just wish they can add protective roofs or covers for them during heavy rainstorms! In that moment I know this gorilla family was like "forget tidying up and the food, we want shelter from this terrifying sound." Gosh! It felt like eternity for them to get access to go inside. They should also have some type of shelter outside for rain or sun.
That was fascinating! African gorillas live with rain and thunder regularly, so I can't imagine them freaking out like Momotaro and Genki. But interestingly, I believe that Momotaro thought he had to protect his family from the thunder, and so stayed out longer.

Fanny 😔it was so heartbreaking! I cannot look and see the fear of a soul I like. I am sure Momotaro did hurt himself. He is so heavy, and he fell with his soft tummy with all of his weight with a kind of flight on that hard metal beam. He could even get inner injuries. Poor ape.
@@williamsmith666 why do you have to call people "idiots" because we're expressing a little empathy for the gorillas? Just because you feel one way doesn't mean everybody else's opinions make them "idiots." These gorilla's were all born in this zoo except Momotaro who was born in captivity at another zoo. So everything that they need is based upon what the zookeepers do or provide for them. Most everyone has stated genuine concern because they were not born in the wild and all of their captive behavior is learned as well. It's not just the rain and thunder that people are worried about, it's all those metal beams that they climb, sit, lay on 24/7 that could be struck by lightning. So instead of calling people names, maybe try to respect other people's concerns instead of calling us "idiots."

I am disappointed that the keepers did not let the gorillas indoors earlier. They know what the weather was going to be. They hate the rain so obviously the flashing of lightening and loud thunder was going to scare them. Seeing them so scared was horrible, I even saw Genki knock on the door to be let in. She also pooped where she was because she was so scared. I know zoo’s have times for doing everything, but sometimes natural doesn’t play along. Gorillas would automatically seek shelter, which they have very little outside. Also being on steel beams in a thunderstorm? No way would I be on that. The other thing that upset me is they opened the middle door KNOWING Momotaro won’t go in there. Why put extra anxiety on him? Don’t get me wrong the keepers do a fantastic job, they always look well and the food they have always look fresh. I just wished they opened the doors earlier, I would put the gorillas first before guests visiting the zoo. It might look funny them running around scared and terrified (in Genki’s case). I however do not. I hope this doesn’t happen again and that the keepers keep an eye on the weather to better prepare. ❤️💋

@@williamsmith666 It does storm in jungles. And many wild apes, especially gorillas, have been shown to avoid it or react negatively. Western Chimps for example have sheltered in caves during rainstorms.

Omg I would be like Genki underneath the doors " Let me in!!! But noo the zoo has to clean the indoor area, which is understandable because they need it to get clean for sanitary reasons. But, since there is soo much metal, which is a conductor I think the zoo should just stop and let them in.
Anytime there is lightning in the area the zoo should bring ALL animals inside. It's especially reckless of them to leave their gorillas out sitting on those big metal lightning rods. That lightning strike at 5:52 was VERY close -- the lightning and the thunder were almost simultaneous meaning it was probably less than 100 meters away. One lightning strike on that metal roof and you would have had several barbecued gorillas. Not a pleasant thought.
When mom gets upset she shakes her hands or trys to wave for help or action. This family could have been hurt if lighting struck those beams they were all on. Was staff on lunch?
WHY Aren't THEY OPENING THAT SMALL ROOM WITH ALL THE BALLS AND WHERE THE KEEPERS DO STATISTICS. Poor guys are freaking out and panicking and they need to give them shelter!!!!!!!!
I don't know if Momo's reaction was necessarily fear. It could have been his instinct to immediately protect his family kicking in but not knowing exactly what lightning and thunder are he may not have known how to respond or where to go. He looked like he could have been running around in confusion, and his facial expression didn't look like fear to me. Anyway, even if it was fear it isn't fair to say he's afraid of thunder -- he wasn't panicking at the sound of the approaching thunder -- what he was afraid of was a near direct lightning strike, and anyone who's ever been that close to a strike like that will tell you that it's a very jarring experience and there's no shame in being frightened by it.
Omgosh I felt so bad for Momotaro!! Why not open the door they know he will enter as well and why did it take so long to open the doors to begin with?? Genki was terrified and trying to take care of Kintaro at the same time and Gentaro was just trying to find one of his parents to protect him during the storm. So sad watching how scared the family was.
The zookeeper couldn't open the door right away because at that time the zookeeper was in the room to clean the room and prepare the gorillas for dinner. It takes about 10 minutes from sunny weather to a thunderstorm, so a few minutes before the zookeeper leaves the gorilla's room is what happens in this video. The zookeeper let the gorillas enter the room as soon as possible.

before I saw this whole video I was thinking of myself when they were running back and forth on the rails that they're slick and they could fall off of them and hurt themselves and Momo just fell he just called himself thank God or he could have gotten hurt I didn't find one thing about this video funny or entertaining.
Roxanna, not all videos have to be funny or entertaining. They can be educational, informative, instructional. They can show unique events or situations that we don't see often. Lowland gorillas spend most of their time up in trees, so under any stressors they will retreat to where they feel most comfortable, that is, up in the heights of their environment. And the rainforest where they live in the wild? It's wet, all day, everyday. Japanese gorillas just are not used to rain since it doesn't rain there that often, & thunders less. Momotaro falling? Natural event. Not likely to hurt himself. He caught himself & got right back on his feet. The gorillas were never in any danger. Scared, yes. That's a part of life, too. They'll learn. PS: using these majestic animals for mere entertainment is a criticism often levied against humans for putting them in zoos & not treating them with due respect. I hope you get something out of these videos other than a few chuckles here & there.
I read the description box and now we knew the reasons why....thank you for the information..I on my part understood now and I think its reasonable the keepers still tdying up the room...and it was nature's call....I myself no need to worry about the lighting because the zoo has a lighting rod....good to know.....but then looking at the brighter picture they are definitely fine....it can be charged to experience it also happen in the wild its normal maybe......🙏🙏🙏
Kimberly Anne, Momotaro doesn't like men in hardhats. The day (October, 2010) he was taken from his mother Momoko, from Ueno zoo, he was sedated by a vet & put into a crate for transport by men in hardhats. That was the last time he ever saw his mom. To this day he gets worked up whenever he sees hardhats. Additionally, the vet used to be his friend. Momotaro hasn't forgiven him & doesn't like him anymore.

Imagine Momotaro would have fell down in his fear. He would have hurt himself so badly. Only because the keepers arn't interested.

May be the previous thunders were not as bad but this one was really loud and went on and on. I hope the zoo after seeing this video came up with a good plan to protect my beloved gorillas. I’m sure the keepers rushed the cleaning and food distribution so they can open doors quickly. No one thought it was about to storm 🤷♀️ . Poor genki was shaking in fear 😢
I really wish they would build them a new place ☹️ this is not right you can tell they are all frightened! I hate them to be out in bad weather they need covered shelter outside! Someplace they can go when they are cleaning or putting food out! Also the outside needs redone more grass more room. Shabani and Haoko place copy one of those. and he almost fell from it being so wet so obviously it’s slippery and NOT safe so change things for them please! Thunder is scary if you do not understand where that booming is coming from. And lightening is scary too! It made me sad to see them all so stressed.
Why don't they open the doors and let them in since they're fearful of thunder and it creates anxiety for the gorillas? They have 2 separate rooms for them...at least open one room so they can get in and feel safe. watching them afraid and anxious is not amusing nor entertainment. Besides, all those metal beams could be struck by lightening. All of these gorillas were born in zoo's and don't know how to react to thunder since they never experienced it in their natural habitat...so they're afraid of it and have nowhere to go unless the caretakers let them in.
Sad, I think they lock the doors when they are cleaning the room and putting out food for them. They need to build something outside to keep them dry and safe. I hope they do it soon. Very upsetting seeing them so terrified.

Also, all 4 of the gorillas climb up to the ceiling to retrieve food and of course Kintaro likes to hang using one arm and kick his feet...those beams must get very slick & slippery. It would be a real tragedy if one of them loses their grip or footing because of the wet beams.

I love this staff and know they love this family. But, they cannot control $ the Zoo will and can put into building a structure to keep them safe and dry in bad weather. I know many Zoo's are suffering money wise having to shut down with virus. But, im sure they could find a company who would build or donate a shed for them. I just hope they can soon because I hate seeing the Gorillas so stressed because they dont know what the noise means and they are terrified. At least with a shed they could keep dry and comfort each other and feel safer when lightening hits. Poor Genki, I thought she was going to stroke out. I was getting mad, screaming at my phone, "open the door'" I could see the anxiety of Genki which was making me anxious! So glad they opened the door a 2nd time for Momotaro. 💜

We humans know and it still scares us, imagine how they feel not knowing. PLEASE KYOTO..Build them a little shed or hut outside that they can go under to at least stay dry when storms hit. In that moment I know this gorilla family was like "forget tidying up and the food, we want shelter from this terrifying sound." Gosh! It felt like eternity for them to get access to go inside. They should also have some type of shelter outside for rain or sun.

モモタロウが梁の上で滑るのは、かなり珍しいことなので、雷の怖さから動揺していたものだと思いますよ。
モモタロウはシルバーバックとして家族を守るために、雷が怖いのに一番上まで登ってとても勇敢なお父さんだった❤
ゴリラは濡れるのを嫌がるのに、ずっと雨の中、家族のために最後まで警戒を怠らなかった。

That was fascinating! African gorillas live with rain and thunder regularly, so I can't imagine them freaking out like Momotaro and Genki. But interestingly, I believe that Momotaro thought he had to protect his family from the thunder, and so stayed out longer.
This is seen in wild gorillas too. Mountain gorillas often freak out when it rains.
Western chimps tend to shelter in caves when it storms as well.

Yes, we all feel the same, I do feel a bit better knowing the videographer explained they have safety lightning proof rods, beams, for the animals safety! Thank goodness! I just wished they can build a shelter to keep the poor family 💞🤗🦍🌿💖 dry during the heavy thunderstorms, ASAP, some kind of covering❗👏They may have funding issues!🤔Or something?? Space obviously! Just because you feel one way doesn't mean everybody else's opinions make them "idiots." These gorilla's were all born in this zoo except Momotaro who was born in captivity at another zoo. So everything that they need is based upon what the zookeepers do or provide for them. Most everyone has stated genuine concern because they were not born in the wild and all of their captive behavior is learned as well. It's not just the rain and thunder that people are worried about, it's all those metal beams that they climb, sit, lay on 24/7 that could be struck by lightning. So instead of calling people names, maybe try to respect other people's concerns instead of calling us "idiots."

I am disappointed that the keepers did not let the gorillas indoors earlier. They know what the weather was going to be. They hate the rain so obviously the flashing of lightening and loud thunder was going to scare them. Seeing them so scared was horrible, I even saw Genki knock on the door to be let in. She also pooped where she was because she was so scared. I know zoo’s have times for doing everything, but sometimes natural doesn’t play along. Gorillas would automatically seek shelter, which they have very little outside. Also being on steel beams in a thunderstorm? No way would I be on that. The other thing that upset me is they opened the middle door KNOWING Momotaro won’t go in there. Why put extra anxiety on him? Don’t get me wrong the keepers do a fantastic job, they always look well and the food they have always look fresh. I just wished they opened the doors earlier, I would put the gorillas first before guests visiting the zoo. It might look funny them running around scared and terrified (in Genki’s case). I however do not. I hope this doesn’t happen again and that the keepers keep an eye on the weather to better prepare. ❤️💋

Omg I would be like Genki underneath the doors " Let me in!!! But noo the zoo has to clean the indoor area, which is understandable because they need it to get clean for sanitary reasons. But, since there is soo much metal, which is a conductor I think the zoo should just stop and let them in.
Anytime there is lightning in the area the zoo should bring ALL animals inside. It's especially reckless of them to leave their gorillas out sitting on those big metal lightning rods. That lightning strike at 5:52 was VERY close -- the lightning and the thunder were almost simultaneous meaning it was probably less than 100 meters away. One lightning strike on that metal roof and you would have had several barbecued gorillas. Not a pleasant thought.

I don't know if Momo's reaction was necessarily fear. It could have been his instinct to immediately protect his family kicking in but not knowing exactly what lightning and thunder are he may not have known how to respond or where to go. He looked like he could have been running around in confusion, and his facial expression didn't look like fear to me. Anyway, even if it was fear it isn't fair to say he's afraid of thunder -- he wasn't panicking at the sound of the approaching thunder -- what he was afraid of was a near direct lightning strike, and anyone who's ever been that close to a strike like that will tell you that it's a very jarring experience and there's no shame in being frightened by it.

Omgosh I felt so bad for Momotaro!! Why not open the door they know he will enter as well and why did it take so long to open the doors to begin with?? Genki was terrified and trying to take care of Kintaro at the same time and Gentaro was just trying to find one of his parents to protect him during the storm. So sad watching how scared the family was.
The zookeeper couldn't open the door right away because at that time the zookeeper was in the room to clean the room and prepare the gorillas for dinner.
It takes about 10 minutes from sunny weather to a thunderstorm, so a few minutes before the zookeeper leaves the gorilla's room is what happens in this video.
The zookeeper let the gorillas enter the room as soon as possible.

モモタロウが梁の上にいる時の場所は雨よけの透明な屋根がついていますよ。ただ雨が降ったらモモタロウがこの場所を独り占めするため、ゲンキとゲンタロウは雨が当たらない壁にへばり付くか、部屋の出入口の扉の前で雨をしのぐことが多いです。
before I saw this whole video I was thinking of myself when they were running back and forth on the rails that they're slick and they could fall off of them and hurt themselves and Momo just fell he just called himself thank God or he could have gotten hurt I didn't find one thing about this video funny or entertaining.
Roxanna, not all videos have to be funny or entertaining. They can be educational, informative, instructional. They can show unique events or situations that we don't see often.
Lowland gorillas spend most of their time up in trees, so under any stressors they will retreat to where they feel most comfortable, that is, up in the heights of their environment. And the rainforest where they live in the wild? It's wet, all day, everyday. Japanese gorillas just are not used to rain since it doesn't rain there that often, & thunders less.
Momotaro falling? Natural event. Not likely to hurt himself. He caught himself & got right back on his feet.
The gorillas were never in any danger. Scared, yes. That's a part of life, too. They'll learn.
PS: using these majestic animals for mere entertainment is a criticism often levied against humans for putting them in zoos & not treating them with due respect. I hope you get something out of these videos other than a few chuckles here & there.

I read the description box and now we knew the reasons why....thank you for the information..I on my part understood now and I think its reasonable the keepers still tdying up the room...and it was nature's call....I myself no need to worry about the lighting because the zoo has a lighting rod....good to know.....but then looking at the brighter picture they are definitely fine....it can be charged to experience it also happen in the wild its normal maybe......🙏🙏🙏

Momotaro's Mom is still alive, her name is Momoko and she now the wife of Silverback Haoko. They live in Ueno Zoo and have 3 other kids with him.
Kimberly Anne, Momotaro doesn't like men in hardhats. The day (October, 2010) he was taken from his mother Momoko, from Ueno zoo, he was sedated by a vet & put into a crate for transport by men in hardhats. That was the last time he ever saw his mom. To this day he gets worked up whenever he sees hardhats.
Additionally, the vet used to be his friend. Momotaro hasn't forgiven him & doesn't like him anymore.
