Just stopped in to say a big AMEN regarding what people say in soap forums (especially Facebook) and your comment that we shouldn't take a lot of stock into what is being said in them. I am an avid gardener, raise chickens (yes, I am a chicken tender), and I also have a soap business. The drama that happens in soap forums is so much more than in my gardening or chicken forums (althought backyard chicken tenders are pretty judgemental, at times. I ignore most of what is said, and instead, rely on reading infomation written by reliablly known experienced soapmakers, like yourself. Thank you for this video. Unfortunately, I recently purchased my latest bulk order of oils, which included olive oil from my supplier, so I am set, but you can bet I will be looking into this if prices don't stabilize by the time I need to buy more.

I think I would rather wash canola oil down the drain as on soap than having it in my food. I want to eat my olive oil I think I'm going to try it. The olive oil I was buying has gone from 19$ to 40$

Love this... I have canola oil in my soap too! Granted it's addition to Olive oil but with all the nice Butters & oils in the recipe, it certainly helps the bottom line!
Have used canola oil a number of times and later when using those soaps I am always like “oh this is a great soap…” and when I go back to look at the recipe almost every time it has canola in it! Thanks for sharing😊
Thanks for the information, as a new soap maker this been an expensive thing to get into. Of course I started after all the price raises. Canola oil is $10 a gallon where I live but that's super cheap compared to a 12 house bottle of olive oil selling for $20, off brand at that. This is going to make it so much easier to experiment with new recipes, colors and designs, as before I have looked at the cost and decided just to stick to basic recipes.

I’ve used canola for years myself with no problems, and my family has always enjoyed my soap! I’ll have to check my recipes to see if there’s a common denominator for DOS prevention, I agree that one or more has likely been helpful for that, however I’ve always thought that oil about to go rancid was more likely the culprit than anything else….(shrug). Haven’t made a batch in awhile, so now I think I will. :) Love your vids!
I've only had one recipe that got DOS...I used a 5% chia oil in a special request soap (which they never collected) that hung around until I gifted it to people.
At Soaper’s Choice, the 35lb. cubetainer (what I buy), has HO sunflower cheaper than canola… and I’ve been using HO sunflower the whole time, so that’s what I’ve been sticking with, but I don’t see why canola as an issue either.

Thank you , I will use canola oil to make a batch tomorrow. Its called rapeseed oil in the uk , and cold pressed rapeseed oil is also a good oil to use for cooking too. Olive oil has doubled in price here . I will get regular canola oil for the soap which i make for our personal use and give to my family and friends as gifts. Thanks
You are right, the right name is rapeseed oil or colza. For marketing they use the name canola. I was reading a few months ago about the canola in a website I didn't remember right know but the information I was reading is excellent and debunking some myths about canola oil. The thing is people demonizing canola oil in soap. But they forget many cosmetic ingredients are made with rapeseed oil like Btms 25 and 50... I have been experimenting with canola oil this months and have great result.
I've been using canola for years too and although I do get dos the 'odd' time I actually prefer to have it in my soap, it actually feels more moisturizing than without it. 🤷♀️
I always do olive oil/coconut oil soaps as my basic recipe. I'm doing a test batch of 2/3 canola to 1/3 coconut oil. I never thought of using canola oil at all. I hope it works out. My first batch took about 3 times as long to come to trace.

I love your vids. I’m a new Soaper but I have been working with essential oils and carrier oils for a while as a salve and balm maker. I tend to veer towards non commonplace carrier oils so I get excited when you reach for an out of the box oil 🥰
I use canola because its more cost effective but im cautious and use it in small amounts. What would you suggest someone infuse with or add in addition to canola oil to prevent DOS or to prevent too high of linoleic and linolenic acids? (And i feel like i read once that too high of linoleic and linolenic acid can cause rancidity, is that correct?)
Ii had dreaded orange spots once! After I made a mini batch of plain basic lard soap I helped with the soap making, long time ago. My bar came spectacular! I decided to make Allepo soap my first soap! Lol!
Only time I've ever had DOS is doing a 100% and 90% Lard soap. This was also before I started adding Sodium Lactate and Citric Acid. Now, that I know this I might try again just for kicks and giggles.
I appreciate your video. I recently started my soap making journey and have been using canola oil along with 2 other oils. I had no idea that it was a thing of this oil not being used. I love the results and will continue to use it when making soap. Keeping it cheap & simple is best in my opinion, it’s all going down the drain anyways 🤷🏽♀️
Here in the UK canola is called Rapeseed oil, and I’m really keen to use it in my soap as it’s grown here in the UK…which is great for the air miles. Olive oil costs more than a bottle of wine now…so I’d love to replace it, but have been worried about the DOS. Really interested in your comments about chelators. I don’t really have a good understanding of chelators. So is Sodium lactate and citric acid (I know you have to adjust the lye for citric acid) good chelators? I don’t tend to use much in the way of clays…but maybe I should? Time to get reformulating 😁 btw…I love your channel as you explain the science which is what I love about soap making 💕
Citric acid is for sure. Sodium lactate is more for bar hardening. Kaolin clay is relatively inexpensive and off white, so you can still add mica to get colors… it’ll be a bit muted, but you’ll still get pretty coloring.😊
I probably haven't been making soap long enough to know canola was hated on. I've mostly stuck to palm, olive and coconut because that's all I know. So thank you for going through the fatty acid break down and explaining this because I would much rather pay 1/3 of the price
True! I don’t currently have any soaps with canola oil for sale. My main flagship soap recipes were formulated without around a decade ago. I use it a lot in wholesale accounts, all of my monthly specialty soaps, etc.
I have made a few batches with canola and was so worried I was doing something bad.. The soap came out amazing. I was going to toy with vegatable shortening but am afraid that would be pushing the limits. What are your thoughts on this. Your opinion matters to me more than anyone else! I hit low bottom by accident, so i hit like bottom, just learning to make better soaps. I did canola oil one time and i used a soap calculator. Is was 100 % canola oil. The scent that i use is rose 🌹 dipped in sodium hydroxide and then drained. Is smell good.

I'm going to be making the switch just because I'm a hobby maker and prices went from £3.90 to £6.75 per litre for olive oil at my local supermarkets whereas canola works out at £1.60 per litre. Luckily I still haven't gotten around to paying for a CPSR yet as I just love experimenting with different oils/butters so much. So at the moment it's an expensive hobby which my friends and colleagues are greatly enjoying 😅. I wouldn't mind being able to sell my soaps even just to get back the cost of materials but I begrudge having to stick to one set recipe here in the UK.

Thank you for doing this! I knew you used Canola oil, but I've been hesitant to make the jump. Just doing a straight replacement of Canola for the Olive in my current favorite recipe, some numbers jump out at me but I don't know how critical they are. (Olive:Canola) Iodine (65:75); Sat:Unsat (38:63 vs. 33:67); INS (138:118). I've heard in the past about keeping the Sat:Unsat at 40:60, INS at around 140 or 160 (I can't remember now) and I don't know what the Iodine is about. Will these changes in numbers make a significant difference? What kind of importance should we be putting on these numbers? I already include clay, SL60 & Citric Acid in all my recipes, so yay for the bonus properties! Thanks for all you do!

I have stopped buying olive oil for soaps as in south Africa the last time I bought 5l for R750 where as i swoppednit for either sun flower oil or canola oil and its working we.. ❤ R150 for 5l is a huge difference. As a beginner soap maker, I use melt and pour soap base to make my soaps. I tried the olive oil soap base and for the money I spent on that I think it's not worth it. There isn't much suds and I am thinking to start making my own soap making now. Do you have a basic recipe?

I've been using Canola oil since just after I started. Have MANY soaps under the name "Gina's Clean & Natural". I've had 3 customers who wouldn't buy due to Canola oil but hundreds who don't mind and LOVE my soaps. 😁
Very interesting. I think canola has always had a bad rap maybe stemming from a nutritional standpoint. But we’re not eating the soap ( no matter how good it smells). This is definitely something I’m going to consider. I have been feeling the sting (turned into a slap!) of the increasing cost of olive oil. I definitely won’t be raising my prices or adjusting the size of my soaps. Thank you for your video!
I’ve used grape-seed in my recipes before but as Mrs. S&C said, it’s definitely different from olive oil. HO Sunflower is what I’m moving to for an olive oil replacement.
@@betsycarrion4716 I get my base oils from Soaper’s Choice. HO sunflower in a 7 lb. container, it’s only $13.51. In the 35# containers (what I buy), it’s $60.20. The 35# is a thick plastic cube with a faucet inside a thick cardboard box.
I just bought some Canola because OO is so high. My mother didn't believe that's what it's for and used it to fry chicken 😂. That's what I get for buying it with my groceries
Does dos make anything unusable about the soap or is it just aesthetic? Right now I make pretty basic soaps for family- not retail and if it had orange spots in it, it just might be visually interesting lol. BTW this is a beautiful soap !
Honestly people report that it has an off smell if DOS develop, but I still don’t see that as an unusable bar for personal use. There are loads of smelly soaps out there. 😂

Canola oil was a FB "argument" the other day, and people just got ugly with their comments. It's ridiculous now people want to shove their opinions down other people's collective throats. My guess would be that the vast majority of those opinionated people have no real knowledge about the properties of each of the oils. I use canola and have never had any problems. I'm watching today to learn more about the various clays. TY for this video.
I use canola oil in alot of recipes I use shea and cocoa butter using it makes my recipe more fuild I have had some one tell me I can’t use that 😂but I do but I put a lot of different oils I’m always making different recipes 😂
Canola is definitely not considered a "cooler" oil, it is actually considered a crap oil because of the food industry. It's considered the diesel oil of cooking oils. Its curb appeal is very low, so low that to have it on a label is the problem with people's perception of it as a junk cooking oil. Because of that for me it would be better to use Sunflower or Safflower as the normal consumer/public will not know as much about these oils and they look better on a label. If it's about sales for a soaper, I would for sure stay clear of Canola.
I mean, it’s cool to have opinions. My experience re: sales and label appeal differs from yours and isn’t that fun? I would for sure stay away from stating anecdotal opinions as a fact that should be applied to all soapmakers.

I cant afford Olive oil no more so i replace it with a mix of avocado oil and canola oil.

Ah yes, I just figured that out! I don't make soap without that either. I even add it to my sea salt soap! It just unmolds and hardens up better!👍
I honestly don’t think there’s enough difference in those numbers to worry about. They’re close enough to provide similar results.

I have stopped buying olive oil for soaps as in south Africa the last time I bought 5l for R750 where as i swoppednit for either sun flower oil or canola oil and its working we.. ❤ R150 for 5l is a huge difference. I did not even know Canola oil did that.. 😂 thank you.. much love...

Can you try to add hydrogenated soy wax in soap of sunflower oil . It would be interesting to know what do you think about it. ❤
As a beginner soap maker, I use melt and pour soap base to make my soaps. I tried the olive oil soap base and for the money I spent on that I think it's not worth it. There isn't much suds and I am thinking to start making my own soap making now. Do you have a basic recipe?

So I’m excited to see some awesome canola oil recipes you might share with us! I haven’t really made up my mind on the couple mainstay recipes most diapers stick with for the majority of their products. I’m liking so many different recipes, it’s really hard to narrow it down, so I’m always super excited when I can get my hands on a new recipe to try out! I’m looking in your videos for the one you mentioned in this video you shared a bit ago, could you tell me what one it is? I’ve used one of your recipes with canola oil in it and it’s one of my favorites.

I've been using Canola oil since just after I started. Have MANY soaps under the name "Gina's Clean & Natural". I've had 3 customers who wouldn't buy due to Canola oil but hundreds who don't mind and LOVE my soaps. 😁
Very interesting. I think canola has always had a bad rap maybe stemming from a nutritional standpoint. But we’re not eating the soap ( no matter how good it smells). This is definitely something I’m going to consider. I have been feeling the sting (turned into a slap!) of the increasing cost of olive oil. I definitely won’t be raising my prices or adjusting the size of my soaps. Thank you for your video!

Hey! I’ve used Grapeseed in soap, but since the fatty acids are wildly different than olive, it would not be a good substitute.
I’ve used grape-seed in my recipes before but as Mrs. S&C said, it’s definitely different from olive oil. HO Sunflower is what I’m moving to for an olive oil replacement.

@@betsycarrion4716 I get my base oils from Soaper’s Choice. HO sunflower in a 7 lb. container, it’s only $13.51. In the 35# containers (what I buy), it’s $60.20. The 35# is a thick plastic cube with a faucet inside a thick cardboard box.

I just bought some Canola because OO is so high. My mother didn't believe that's what it's for and used it to fry chicken 😂. That's what I get for buying it with my groceries
Does dos make anything unusable about the soap or is it just aesthetic? Right now I make pretty basic soaps for family- not retail and if it had orange spots in it, it just might be visually interesting lol. BTW this is a beautiful soap !
Honestly people report that it has an off smell if DOS develop, but I still don’t see that as an unusable bar for personal use. There are loads of smelly soaps out there. 😂
It's used canola (rapeseed) lol for years in my soaps. Not had DOS ever. I use kaolin and salt. Maybe you're correct and this does make a difference.

Canola oil was a FB "argument" the other day, and people just got ugly with their comments. It's ridiculous now people want to shove their opinions down other people's collective throats. My guess would be that the vast majority of those opinionated people have no real knowledge about the properties of each of the oils. I use canola and have never had any problems. I'm watching today to learn more about the various clays. TY for this video.

I use canola oil in alot of recipes I use shea and cocoa butter using it makes my recipe more fuild I have had some one tell me I can’t use that 😂but I do but I put a lot of different oils I’m always making different recipes 😂

Canola is definitely not considered a "cooler" oil, it is actually considered a crap oil because of the food industry. It's considered the diesel oil of cooking oils. Its curb appeal is very low, so low that to have it on a label is the problem with people's perception of it as a junk cooking oil. Because of that for me it would be better to use Sunflower or Safflower as the normal consumer/public will not know as much about these oils and they look better on a label. If it's about sales for a soaper, I would for sure stay clear of Canola.
I mean, it’s cool to have opinions. My experience re: sales and label appeal differs from yours and isn’t that fun? I would for sure stay away from stating anecdotal opinions as a fact that should be applied to all soapmakers.
