How to format a paper according to APA (6th edition) standards in Microsoft Word 2007. For an excellent Flash presentation, see here: flash1r.apa.org...
I have taken 3 psychology classes. Figuring out APA format was simply go to this site and follow the example. You just made my semester easier thank you!
I'm a freshman at Tarleton State and never heard of APA. The way you explained it help me understand how its suppose to look. Thank you for this video!
Thank you so much for the tutorial video. I have to do an APA essay for one of my college classes and I didn't had an idea on how to do one. It is super easy the way you explained it and all the great details.
Great stuff! I used to find it a bore, too. But, your professors will appreciate it, and if you are submitting your work to a peer-reviewed journal you will appear more professional than those that don't bother.
Thank you for this video, I'm currently in an IT class where we're focusing on APA formatting. She's extremely vague when "teaching" us anything or giving feedback. This helps so much to see exactly how to do this.
I hope you all find this video useful! If you have any questions, please do drop me an email. And if the video has REALLY helped and you want to buy me a beer, please see www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=L692FVF8PNUKU
You don't deserve a beer only. Honestly, you deserve more than that. In my religion, drinking and offering beer/wine is a big sin, so can pay you the equal cost of a beer if you promise me that with that money, beer/wine will not be purchased. I extend my apology if any of my word or comment hurt you or any other reader as i have no right to decide about others what to drink and what to not. Beer/wine hurts our liver, so i wish you and readers of this comment a healthy and happy life.
Thank YOU! I was getting frustrated because MSword 2013 was frustrating. I actually lost points on papers because it was all out of whack. Great Tutorial!!
This was very helpful for me to set up a fresh document. I have a few comments. APA 6 now requires the DOI when available (ex., doi:xxxx.xxx.xxxx/xx) or the "Retrieved from" + URL on anything retrieved electronically. Most of my undergraduate professors and all of my graduate school professors demand it. Also, in the reference section, it's easier (and more reliable) to set the paragraphs with a hanging indent, rather than force indent each line after the first. It is a rare reference that only fits on one line.
This is an excellent tutorial on APA 6th edition formating for Word. Very clear and easy to understand presentation. Thank you Jim Grange. I have just subscribed to your channel.
Thank you so much for explaining APA 6th edition. I tell you I really had hard time understanding how the headers, in text-citations, block quotations and references worked. After looking at your video on how the functions to the functions on Word 2007. It has given me a better insight on how to do APA research papers now. Thanks for the upload CognitiveControl. This was a big help indeed. I can not wait to see more of your videos.
Awesome! Thank you so much for all your tips. For instance, I did not know that we are to keep it 'left align' and not click on the 'justify' where it makes straight lines on both sides. Thank you!
Correct. But if you come across someone so pedantic as to pick you up on that (be it an editor or a teacher marking you) then you are going to have bigger problems than your capital "H"s :)
Thank you so much. I recently started a new degree program and needed to present a paper in APA 6. This really helped. Hope you don't mind, I'd like to share with my classmates. Tks!
Hi Jim, it's Katie! Why did I not know of these videos till you gave me my draft back? It's so helpful! Just one question though, do I need to put 'General Discussion' on my paper, or just 'Discussion'?
Wonderful! Very clean video, nice and concise. thanks for helping me format my college paper :) this was so much simpler to follow than the pamphlet they gave me at the library
Thanks for posting the video. Can you tell me what the spaces between sentences? are you always double space or single space? For example, when you indicated the experiment report as the subtitle and then starting the new sentence with a indentation.
For the hanging indents for references there is an option in Word. Go to the paragraph button (used to set line spacing), then "line spacing options", then under the first "special" box there is "Hanging" -Stephen
Thank you so much. The abstract title, and the title of the paper are not in bold but the rest of other titles, such as method, results.. are in bold, right? Thank you again
My pleasure! Yes, left-align only. This is because when you submit and get work accepted in journals it makes the transfer to journal copy-editing easier for the staff!
Thank you for the video. so helpful for my assignment this year. Just a doubt reg the 'Title of the paper 'after abstract. should it be bold as well? or just the' Method' has to be put in bold? Pls help.
thanks, you just save my Botox..... awesome tutorial on APA format. You should be a professor i learn more from you in 10 minutes than my 2 1/2 hour psychology class
@Evelyn Do you mean vertical double spaces? Or horizontal spaces: like this .? For vertical, always double space. For horizontal, I don't think it matters, but I always single space. Double space between sentences I think is quite old fashioned, from when typewriters were the norm. Could be wrong though!
For anyone having trouble with making a different header on a second page due to it being synced. Go back up to your first header, click on it to be able to edit it, under the "options" section that's located right under the "green design tab", check "Different First Page". That way, when on your second page, you can edit your header without it being synced to the header on the first page.
Hello! Thank you kindly for the tutorial! In regards to the references page, is it still double spaced between each reference? Or just between the lines of the reference?
:) Nothing wrong of course, but often it comes to form over substance .... Anyway thanks once more for the guide, really nice, really clear and understandable. Helped me a lot on my latest MBA assignments. I recommended it strongly to all my schoolmates :)
Great video thank you! You can actually make your indentation automatic for every paragraph under The Paragraph dialog box-Indentation-Special:First Line By: 0.5".
Thank you! The most complete tu tutorial I've seen. I have a question though: my APA manual claims that the first time you quote all the authors should appear but not in the following references of the same paper, like this: yada yada yada (Einstein, Landau & Newton, 1905) yada yada (Einstein et al, 1905). First time -> (Einstein, Landau & Newton, 1905) following quotations -> (Einstein et al, 1905) How can I make Word respect this rule? It allways uses the 1st time format... Thanks again
Jim I am writing an article for the University newspaper and would like you use your link as a good source for students having issues with APA 6th edition format. It was very easy to follow. As a masters student, I have become experienced in the APA format, however, there are always new student entering the world of education. I will be use that you get the attention for your RUclips video. Your name will be references, as well as the date it was uploaded.
As a professor who has published several articles in APA journals, I don't think anyone would really lose sleep about this :) But thanks for pointing this out!
I have taken 3 psychology classes. Figuring out APA format was simply go to this site and follow the example. You just made my semester easier thank you!
8 years later and this is still useful.
I'm a freshman at Tarleton State and never heard of APA. The way you explained it help me understand how its suppose to look. Thank you for this video!
Because I have a horrendous memory I watch your video every single time I have an essay. I couldn't do it without you. Thanks so much.

Of all the documentation, instructions, videos etc. etc. ... this by far was the most clear and concsie instructions!!! MUCH APPRECIATED!
Thank you! Excellent teaching! I was a bit rusty on APA, but you cleared it all up for me!
My pleasure!
No way....you're my hero! I needed for a project and when my professor asked me where I learned APA style, I spoke to him for you and your video!
I hope you all find this video useful! If you have any questions, please do drop me an email. And if the video has REALLY helped and you want to buy me a beer, please see www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=L692FVF8PNUKU
Very useful; however, I have your video playing in the background. Your voice is soothing! Consider doing meditation CDs!

This video is incredibly helpful! One minor thing - the running head has a capital "R" but not a capital "h" for the APA style. Thanks again!
Before watching this video, I thought APA style was abstract! Very helpful, thnx a lot!
You Sir, deserve a medal !! Thank you. The APA 6th Edition book is nightmare.
Thanks heaps! Assignment due tomorrow and this helped me race through the referencing and formatting
Thank YOU! I was getting frustrated because MSword 2013 was frustrating. I actually lost points on papers because it was all out of whack. Great Tutorial!!

Fantastic stuff - thanks!
You're welcome :)
This video helped a lot because I don't have my notes and I wanted to work on the assignment(12 page book report) before it is too late.
This is an excellent tutorial on APA 6th edition formating for Word. Very clear and easy to understand presentation. Thank you Jim Grange. I have just subscribed to your channel.

Thank you for taking the time to share this video, the only thing I can say is the "H" in "head" is suppose to be lower-case
Correct. But if you come across someone so pedantic as to pick you up on that (be it an editor or a teacher marking you) then you are going to have bigger problems than your capital "H"s :)
LOL - I only noticed because a classmate got points off on an assignment we just had in a masters program, because the "h" was not lowercase.
Thank you so much. I recently started a new degree program and needed to present a paper in APA 6. This really helped. Hope you don't mind, I'd like to share with my classmates. Tks!
Thank you very much! I've never used APA before and you make it look so simple. This is just great!
Excellent tut! Very well presented with a beautiful accent. Thank you. I need 7th edition though.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. getting the header like the way its supposed to be in apa 6th ed was giving me a BIG headache.
Hi Jim, it's Katie! Why did I not know of these videos till you gave me my draft back? It's so helpful! Just one question though, do I need to put 'General Discussion' on my paper, or just 'Discussion'?
Back to school after 4 years and I have a essay due in this apa 6th format. THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE HELP!
This is my go to video when am writing my school papers. Simplified, not too fast, detailed and helpful.
Thanks a lot.
That's great to hear!
For the hanging indents for references there is an option in Word. Go to the paragraph button (used to set line spacing), then "line spacing options", then under the first "special" box there is "Hanging"

Thank you for helping, thanks to this video I learned how to properly use this format, after many attempts of trying to do it on my own :/
Thank you so much. The abstract title, and the title of the paper are not in bold but the rest of other titles, such as method, results.. are in bold, right? Thank you again
Very well done video and tutorial, helped me a ton, however I had a question in regards to whether or not you also had to bold the abstract?
Outstanding Job! Very easy to follow your instructions!
The subheadings are just for an empirical report. You can use the similar formatting of the sub headings if you are using subheadings in your paper.
My pleasure! Yes, left-align only. This is because when you submit and get work accepted in journals it makes the transfer to journal copy-editing easier for the staff!
Jim, thank you very much! Thi was the part I was really afraid of!! You made it seem so very simple!! Once again, thank you!
My absolute pleasure!
you have a very calming voice
Thanks! Just don't fall asleep in your exam!
Fantastic summary of APA formatting. Thanks for creating and posting this!
thanks Jim, helped with the transition from Harvard to APA/6 for Uni.
Thank you so much! This was so much more concise then the information given to me in class. This is going to help me so much.
I agree!!! So helpful!! I always refer back to this whenever writing a paper just to be sure. Thanks so much for posting.
this really helped me alot and a very nice and calming powerful voice
Wow - thanks!
Thank you so much for this video. It broke everything down easily to understand.
Just as I wanted to pull my hair out...this video came through for me!!! THANKS!!!

paragraph are justified?what font size of university and author name?
no not justified. and font 12.
+yusaira mukhtar thanks
Thank you.
Question: There is a way to center the title page vertically. Should we do that or hitting Enter several times suffices?
I would have liked to know what level of the headings you were using.
For anyone having trouble with making a different header on a second page due to it being synced. Go back up to your first header, click on it to be able to edit it, under the "options" section that's located right under the "green design tab", check "Different First Page". That way, when on your second page, you can edit your header without it being synced to the header on the first page.
Thank you so much, simple and precise.
Thanks mate, you just saved me on my philosophy paper!
This was so helpful, thank you for making a great video explanation of APA formatting!
Excellent video and explanation - thank you.
Thank you so much! This was very helpful.
Hello! Thank you kindly for the tutorial! In regards to the references page, is it still double spaced between each reference? Or just between the lines of the reference?
+Stephanie Eklind If you have double-space enabled, then just hit return after each reference and that will provide the correct spacing.
This was excellent. My first APA style paper, thank you for the instructions.
@susanghopkins My pleasure! It's surprising how easy it is, actually. I think the clarity gets lost in the manuals somewhere :)
Do you have a video for APA formatting using Google Doc Application for the iPad?
Thanks for the video, it was a great help.
Thank you so much I was lost before watching this clip very helpful

This is a God send! Thank you!!!
Thank you! The most complete tu tutorial I've seen.
I have a question though: my APA manual claims that the first time you quote all the authors should appear but not in the following references of the same paper, like this:
yada yada yada (Einstein, Landau & Newton, 1905) yada yada (Einstein et al, 1905).
First time -> (Einstein, Landau & Newton, 1905)
following quotations -> (Einstein et al, 1905)
How can I make Word respect this rule? It allways uses the 1st time format...
Thanks again
