I feel like it's because A) They cast Neil Patrick Harris (love the guy, but...he's a comedy actor, come on) and B) the series had to have SOME enjoyable (read: marketable) aspects to pick up more viewers. I love the books to pieces but I know dark and tragic stories for kids aren't everyone's bitter cup of tea.
