Ok, DENTAL ASSISTANT here. I can settle this. The "normal" xrays, where you place the sensor in the mouth and have a wall unit swung into place for the image. Those are bitewings and occlusal images. Used to see between the teeth to diagnose cavities but don't usually show the whole tooth. Not because your teeth are "too big" its just the style of image, horizontal. This unit also takes peri-apical images showing the full tooth root and all, but can only fit 1 or 2 teeth in the image since its vertical. The machine that spins around your head while you stand still is a panoramic image or possibly a cephalograph showing all the developing teeth as well as all erupted teeth, typically used in orthodontic evaluations but also by dentists to see positioning of teeth for extraction needs and overall development. Pano images are not used in diagnosing cavities; bitewings, PA's and occlusals are. The size of your teeth is not, nor has it ever been a factor in the type of xray you received. Hope this helps. ❤❤
Heart broken that it's moving to an every other week schedule, but hopefully it will lead to more success. Love this show and would rather have it every other week and have it be awesome and long running, then have it run itself ragged and have some sort of burn out. Love you guys, thanks for making this show!
My favorite new podcast. Its like sitting in the lunch room next to the table where all the really smart, funny, and nice kids sit and introvertedly listening and enjoying their conversation.
I can’t stop talking about how much I love SciShow and SciShow Tangents (genuinely one of the few podcasts I’ve given a chance and have fallen in love with). I’m excited to continue watching and learn more fun facts 💕
My daughter asked if teeth grow because her teeth looked so much smaller as a baby vs now when they are just starting to wiggle. I refuse to believe that Sam had the same size teeth now as he did at like 10. We asked the dentist and they seemed more unsure than I would have liked.
I always thought teeth didn’t grow, but I swear my 4 year old’s teeth are bigger than when they first came out! My 2 year old just chipped a tooth & it had me comparing their teeth … maybe 4 got dad’s big teeth & 2 got my little teeth, but they are such different sizes!!
I can assure you they do not grow. Not a dentist, but work for one. Over the last 7 years as a pediatric assistant I have seen hundreds of families and thousands of xrays and every kid has the same size teeth each visit. We compare previous images to recent for everyone to assess cavities and development and not one has had a "growing" tooth. The space around them and the jaw and the gums all change so that is where the difference your noticing is coming from.
I've had x-rays done both ways. Sometimes one or the other, sometimes both types in the same visit. I don't think it's just a big teeth thing. I think there are just different machines that exist. Google says, "Panoramic images provide more coverage for periodontal bone defects, periapical lesions, and pathological jaw lesions than bitewings, thus extending the diagnostic benefit of pan bitewings as compared to intraoral bitewings." Sounds like there's more than 1 reason to get the standing version.
I will say, as a big fan, I'm a yt premium subscriber. I don't get ads and I rarely comment or like. All I really contribute is one view per episode. If it is helpful, I would be more than okay with you guys including sponsored ads in the RUclips version of this podcast.
I believe I heard somewherw that the revenue from RUclips premium views works out greater than advertisements on regular RUclips. I wish I could look up if that's true because it helps me feel better.
@@jessicatiedeman1065 I've head this discussed on a podcast - by podcasters who also run youtube channels - and they did the math and confirmed that RUclips RED watch time provides more revenue than regular watch time. But that was for a specific channel and a few years ago now, so that's more of an anecdote than evidence.
I’ve had both types of X-rays for my teeth, but the spinning one was really only used by my orthodontist (dentist who does braces), and once by my dentist when my top two canines weren’t coming down enough (hence why I needed braces)
My teeth are normal sized but my mouth space is miniscule. When I got my teeth scanned for Invisalign they couldn't get the scanning pen into my mouth past my canines really. They gave up and I got braces instead. My orthodontist told me I have the smallest mouth out of any of her adult patients 🤠
Lol same. My oral surgeon told me to marry someone with small teeth and hopefully their small teeth and my small jaw would work out. This was right before he pulled 8 teeth for my braces
I have normal sized teeth, on the outside but my roots are very deep and ridiculous, and I have certainly been in that special room before that's how I have gotten my tooth x-rays, standing inside that tower thing, that Sam describes.
34:30 Just wanted to say I really appreciated this discussion, it was nice to have longevity research covered by a level headed crew of science communicators. I feel like wanting a longer healthier life is a reasonable desire, and I'm always happy to see how research is progressing, but the topic does seem to attract a lot of (as Sam so succinctly put it) real f@%#ing weirdos. P.S. I'm not a rich guy, just a regular guy who wants more time to complete my quest of finding the tastiest salmon and cream cheese bagel.
They've always just done the x-rays in the regular chair for me until the last time that they did x-rays. It sounded like the tower thing was a new machine the dental office got that they use for everyone because it's way faster.
2:21 what a bizarre thing to say to a person??? I think I speak for all the others of us here on RUclips when I say all three of you have beautiful shiny smiles and maybe your giant teeth store extra joy!
As for large teeth, every dentist I've been to in Korea uses the tower machines. It is a 360 view and I have a small head and regular size teeth. They even use the same machine for my daughter, who is 5, and has normal kid sized teeth So it may just be the dental office has a newer machine and phased out the old bitey films. Honestly, the new machine does a MUCH better job anyway
The standing dental xray is not for big teeth, it's just a different machine. More expensive and not all dental clinics have them. They are better for certain situations and conditions because they obviously provide more coverage.
Fellow Team Big Teeth member here. I didn't realize that I was put in the big chomper x-ray too! 😭 But maybe I should have realized when my dentist said that while she usually cuts wisdom teeth in half during extraction, she had to cut mine into thirds...
I recently had to go in for a full facial X-ray to examine my molars and frontal sinuses in preparation for extractions and replacement of bad root canals. I had to use the spinning overhead machine, first time I ever had to.
Here (in australia) you get the 360° xray because the dentist knows you cant afford 4 different xrays, big teeth can be imaged by the standard xrays if they think you can afford it, doesnt matter how accurate it is as long as you can pay for them to slice open the roof of yor mouth
There is a study on a drug used for organ transplant patients in humans that they're using to extend the life span of dogs by reversing some of the signs of aging.
We do have people getting younger - as medicine and technology progress, premature babies survive from younger and younger ages. We now routinely see babies born at 24 weeks that live and eventually thrive. It's obviously not ideal and there are huge health risks associated with premature births, but we have the youngest living humans ever!
NOTE to SAM , you need your laptop screen hinges tightening as your webcam is bouncing ,. or i can reccomend , Logitech C920 webcam (somes with its own tripod.
I have had both kinds of dental x-rays. So what's that say about my teeth? (I think my old dentist only had one of the big teeth machines for all his exam rooms, where my new dentist has a machine on an arm in every single exam room.)
None of the described dental xray things match my experience until sam said about biting on painful things... I just got xrays and the sensor thing you bite on has gotten bigger and more painful
you can get 3d xrays if you have big teeth but also if you have a tiny mouth. i always have to get the 3d ones because the little board things or whatever for normal xrays don’t fit in my mouth
I think it's interesting to think about proteins, like prions, and cancers in terms of evolutionary fitness. Like that cancer cell was able to successfully reproduce as cancer, In the environment, with your immune system being a huge evolutionary pressure.
I mean, it's a smaller amount, but babies born earlier and earlier survive... but we don't then say "the baby was born aged negative six weeks", everyone is born aged 0 that day, so the 'six weeks' or whatever still counts on their age!
It just makes sense tho... cause sperm only lives for so long until it dies. It makes sense that cycling it through would help... especially since when you take T-boosters make your body say "I'm done making sperm, I already made all I'll need"
I bet as bats age, they do learn ways to get insects with less effort. They probably avoid the herd, as a giant mass of bats flock out of the cave, they probably emerge later, or they were the first to go. They have experience and go in a slightly different directions. Diving straight to skim alone above the water and going under the tree canopies in the opposite direction of the mass of other bats. They probably eat a few insects and then call it quits early, also snatching most of the insects that venture into the cave while the remaining bats are gone. They probably spend more time in the safety of the cave conserving energy while using their experience to maximize their catch with less effort. I'm definitely not an expert on bats and this is all my opinion, but I'm pretty sure going to lunch early is a novice mistake. Not something the elders would try😂
I mean... I have ape teeth but they don't bother to use any special machine, they just assume the roots are good at the end so long as all the stuff leading up to it is good
I mean, I know that everyone involved with scishow and all the other 5 million things Hank does are very sensitive and huggy and in touch with their emotions. But come on, Hank teases him in a clearly joking way for comedic affect, not to actually hurt his feelings. It's literally his job to be the butt of the joke, he's the everyman, he's like Alan Davies on QI, except scaled way down.
-Have Sam help with the book, he'll make it more fun. -My teeth look exactly like Ceri's, crowded in just the same way, but I get the standard machine. What Ceri has are secretly tall teeth. Not a lot of things are secretly tall

I've always thought of aging as coding errors. Since DNA doesn't just copy and paste, errors creep in and corrupt the code.
In australia we only have the "big teeth" machine, we don't have the other one. so everyone get the cool spinning X-ray thing!

I have to go to the special room at the dentist too! I guess that means I have big teeth? Like Sam. no one has ever told me...

Graceful senescence doesn't feel like it should be about getting older without aging. More like getting older without becoming a jerk
Last time I was at the dentist they took my xray both ways! I wonder what that means.
It just makes sense tho... cause sperm only lives for so long until it dies. It makes sense that cycling it through would help... especially since when you take T-boosters make your body say "I'm done making sperm, I already made all I'll need"
On the other side of the spectrum are those of us who have to ask if they have child sizes for very tiny mouths
My question is, will the immortal legend that is humpy Hank be part of the aiHank training data?

How did each of the two stories somehow both involve smashing up testes? And it's a thing about aging, but apparently, smashed testes as well

Ageing is a progressive decline with time whereas senescence occurs throughout the lifespan, including during embryogenesis.
