I'm almost 40 and always felt this my entire professional life - doesn't help when you live and work in NY and you're constantly surrounded by the best talent in the world (because they are sure to remind you this everyday) I found this video extremely inspiring thank you!

Thanks Kevin. I really needed this. Just ran into your channel because Amazon recruiter included your github in an online assessment prep doc. And after looking at all the interview questions I already feel not enough. This made my day a lot better :)

Thanks Kevin for sharing experience about impostor syndrome. You went a bit deep into the subject which is a rare sight and provided me with more strength to face such situations in future. I personally had the gravest of my experiences during the month of September when I received internship for the first time but because I didn't get the validation from the people around me as expected, I fell into the trap of me being an impostor who just made it through without being capable enough and that's why people didn't applaud me for it. Although I wasn't very skillful, but majority of my inferiority complex came from comparing myself through others' validation. However after about 4 months of struggle and actual practice, I was able to close that inferiority gap. But once again, thanks for sharing your experiences and hope you'll discuss such mental health topics in your upcoming videos.

I always knew your were SUS!
But on a more serious note... everyone needs to understand that no matter what career path you are in, practice makes perfect. A huge part of practice is failing...A LOT.... but more importantly learning from your failures. Most traditional education is just building the foundation for you to practice on. Where most people fail to gain confidence is not taking on practical experience. A few internships during your college education allows you to know what to expect in the real world.
People are too tough on themselves. It's not easy to graduate with a degree, a lot of time and effort goes into that and your knowledge and growth is immense, you need to give yourself credit for going from nothing to something. But again, just because you know all the terminology around coding, good practice, and wrote a few scripts here and there, doesn't mean you are a developer. It's not untill you are thrown into a real worked experience can you develop. This doesn't make you an imposter, it's NORMAL!
Just be honest about your abilities and experience level in your interviews and the right company will come your way. It doesn't have to be a FAANG the first time around. But if you follow the right growth path for yourself, it can be whatever company you want.....or maybe even your own!

Wow what a coincidence this shows up in my feed. I've struggled with this for years. I felt like I was never "good enough" for a SE career. I just transitioned from community college to university and finally am starting to realize I'm more competent than I've given myself credit for. Just took a big leap and applied for internships this week. Any tips on landing a solid SE internship? Do you think being an information science major will hurt me vs comp sci? I didn't even bother trying comp sci because my confidence was so lacking.

Me too. Never felt good enough . Self taught and school taught. It’s the cost of being smart and lacking ego….even though at the first gig I had no degree was placed into a senior role in my second year. Even driving the company to an acquisition. Still felt as you were describing. It’s in my disposition to self criticize which makes it worse.

Hey! It's the same for me. But the difference is that, I actually perform just slightly above average during tests all the time. I felt like I needed to cover tutorials repeatedly to even grasp what is going on, and everyone around me just seems to get it so easily all the time. I felt like an imposter EVEN though my GPA is above average because after every single test I don't really feel like I nailed the important or the core topic of the subject. I feel so fake and an imposter among the "smarter" ones...
I'm currently struggling to get an internship! Could you do a video of how you get to your interviews? I spent majority of my time preparing for the interview but struggle to actually get any interviews.
Thanks for the quality content as always~! ^_^

Hey Kevin, really hope you read this, because I want to say thanks and I'm not sure how else to reach you. (I think you shut down, or maybe I accidentally left your discord server)
Anywho, you most probably wouldn't remember but I'm the dude who wanted to get into game development and took that 1 hour coding practice session with you last year, and absolutely bombed at it. Even though I had been coding since I was 10, trying to foray into game development and seeing people do all these amazing, creative things and having to look at tutorials myself at every little step made me suffer from imposter syndrome as well, and my confidence was just through the floor. I had tanked dozens of interviews but during that spectacularly bad mock interview with you, I guess your method of explaining how to break down and approach certain problems was the beginning of my revival, so to say. I was able to shed all feelings of being an imposter in this pool of extremely talented people, learned again to have confidence in my abilities and got a job as game programmer in one of the leading studios here in Europe. Thank you for the part you played in it !
