Miracast basically uses 2.4GHz as the control channel and 5GHz for the content stream. The Nexus 4 smartphone is dual band and OS 4.2 so it supports it.
Under OS 4.2, the calendar app still has the month of December, but if you try to create an event for a contact in People (contacts) like a birthday or anniversary, you'll find there's no month of December!
I'd like to get the 3G model in house, because Google lists it as AT&T compatible on their Nexus 7 page but they do list bands that should work with T-Mobile. Weird!

Yes, you can change ringtones without JB. How does N7 help playing games in both orientation? Because it only runs smartphone apps that are made for that screen ratio? Well, with or without butter, my N7 is buffering a lot for some unknown reason after the 4.2.1 update. Are you having the same issue?

This reminds me a lot of people comparing HDTV's at places like Best Buy. Side by side HDTV's appear to vary a lot because you can see the specific differences you may never notice at home where the $500 difference in price matters more. Is there still a lag? I hardly even notice it and if there is, does it matter?

Also, about the build quality of the N7. I've dropped it several times 3-4 ft from the ground taking it out of my pockets and dropped it from my face (5'7") to hardwood floor and so far it has only sustained one scratch near the webcam. Pretty pleased overall.
Great comparison as always Lisa. I know there isn't a great demand for this comparison but would you please do a Playbook vs Nexus 7 smackdown. For me, other than a not so great app store, imo, the Playbook has all of these beat. Your thoughts....
Just a quick note, on the iPad you can change the brightness without leaving the app, double tap the home button, and then swipe over to the left and you have the brightness option, along with pausing music :)
Glad you liked the review. Sorry to say I can't remember which wallpaper site I got that iPad wallpaper, but it was a site that does tablet and desktop wallpapers not just iOS stuff. Check out Poolga, they have some nice free wallpapers for iOS devices.

as hard as it is to believe, the nexus has stereo speakers too, they're just even closer together than the ipad's. if you hold your hand or some other divider in the center of the speaker grille on the back of the nexus, you can actually hear a TINY bit of stereo separation

Also does it make a good pc companion ? is it a good time to get a nexus 7 32GB now ? i am tired of my sony xperia tablet, not only it have those problems and it have no micro USB, it's software optimization is terrible, it is like i am running on 800 MHZ, my htc incredible S runs smoother and faster :/ , sony is really slow on updates and they do not support their android products properly.... Just bought both. Ipad mini 16gb wifi and nexus 7 32gb 3g. Really liking the screen size with the ipad mini and having played with them both instore, the ipad mini does have a little more wow factor and style.
You can remove the slight lagginess in Android 4.2 by disabling background sync on Google Currents. Heck disable it by clearing its data from Settings-Applications. Video should have mentioned the Nexus 7 has a better aspect ratio for viewing videos in landscape. Also has better keypad entry with a gesture swiping. Finally Google Now Siri.
Really like you reviews Lisa I recently got for myself a nexus 7 reason being i already have a laptop and a smarphone, and there was no point in spending a whole lot of money on a larger ipad, as well as the fact that to me Ipad Mini is just not good value for money. Secondly i would like to point out an important fact that there are consumers living outside of US who donot even have LTE and would not have it in near future so what's the point of having a good LTE device.
I will buy the mini if it has the retina display and an A5 or maybe A5x chip next year. But I still think the iPad is just as portable and perhaps more easier to use multitouch gesture on.

Hey Lisa, Why does it seem that the Android tablet makers are making such stupid mistakes? For example, putting a dual-core chip in the Nexus 10 or not putting in a back-facing camera in the Nexus 7? I think that these mistakes are simply not needed, and these manufacturers need to step their game up! What's your opinion? PS, Why is the Nexus 10's webcam off center! (I'm a but OCD...)
@mobiletechreview someone on XDA discovered the reason for the sluggish 4.2 update has more to do with Google Currents trying to sync all the time... Just turn off sync for currents and it should be zippy again!

The Nexus 7 is a really compelling buy. However, I already have a Galaxy S3. How could someone who already has an Android phone benefit from the Nexus 7, besides it being a little bigger?
The biggest issue I have with the ipad is it was out of date before it even hit store shelves. Yes, out of the box 275,000 apps are perfect for the mini, but that's only because those apps work on the equally low resolution ipad 2. Many apps from the App store are not available or will not work on the mini because they have been developed specifically for the Retina display ipad. As developers continue to push apps to the higher res, the apps available for the mini will shrink in number...
Buy an on the go usb cable for £2 on amazon and the nexus is open to any media you may have be it vids, docs, music, pics etc on a usb stick or memory card

how come that android still lags on quad core processors while ios does not on dual core processors? it's not about the bare specs, the efficience of the OS plays the most dominant role.

It's not all about specs, bro. It's about the overall experience when using the device. I have both the mini and the Nexus 7 and I can tell you that the mini is much smoother when doing just about everything from web browsing to playing games. The 7 drops frames left and right, especially while using chrome. Also, I love having 250,000+ tablet optimized apps ready for me on my iPad as opposed to stretched out phone apps. All of that adds to a good experience and also the mini isn't supposed to

Actually that's right, according to Asus and Google product page, it has but doesn't sound like that. And yes I have one :) I also have a Galaxy S2, when I listen the same song on both devices with the max volume, I can't even hear the Nexus 7 :s That's a little bit weird but generally it's enough.
There is no comparison. I wanted to get the Nexus 7, went to the shop very eagerly just after seeing lots of reviews and comparing the specs. There was a discount too. After holding it in my hand, testing it for a few minutes I was very dissapointed by the overall quality and feel. Got the iPad mini and I'm still very pleased with it.
The Nexus 7 is really fantastic on performance and versatility and customization especially with a new 4.2 upgrade. However I will say that it does tend to crash on occasion when it is supposed to be able to handle the game play. But other than that it is a really great device that I would choose over apple any day.
a budget tablet. It's literally supposed to be a less expensive, smaller iPad. Anyway's i'm not trying to argue. I love both platforms. I have a mac and a GS3 that I use as my daily phone. Oh, lets not forget the build quality on the mini as well.

The online specs show compatibility with Tmobile which in some areas is just as fast as LTE.

Nexus 7 has 2 speakers. You can pop the back open and take a look inside. There just happens to be 1 speaker grille.
main grip with android and the N7 is that crumby nav bar that takes up 3/4 inch on the bottom screen

@WOWskarphace Yes, there's a big difference I speed from the iPad 1 and the Nexus 7, I came from the iPad as well. Love my 32gb Nexus.

With iOS 6 it doesn't matter if you've your hand on the screen, it will only detect finger movement and ignores accidental touches. Works pretty well.

@23Chak while you think it's useless, others are thinking how good it is to have a fine camera on your portable device.
The ipad supports Bluetooth hid for keyboards only where as the nexus 7 supports Bluetooth keyboards, mice, and game pads.
