British humor can be very dry...which is very enjoyable. Holy smokes though. That seemed to not be the right decision by Merc. When it comes to Max, they are just scared to death to give up track position, it appears.
How many times do they have to lose the position and a race lead to a Red Bull on a safety car restart simply because Red Bull pitted for new tyres and they didn't? Unbelievable.
@@victormurcia5845 no he’s not right. Just because a strategy didn’t work out, doesn’t mean it was the wrong one. Sometimes there is no good option and f1 kid fans ignore the other outcome for whatever reason
Yeah. Like becoming 2nd in the World Championship. He closed the gap with Perez by 8 points and is only 14 points off from being #2. If I were Merc, I'd know who to give priority...
The thing is if Mercedes had made a double stack Russell might have lost his place regardless as he changed tyres when the Safety Car was already out there and they used the pitlane instead of the straight. We have seen with Sainz what happens when you think the road is clear. And then it would have been Hamilton vs Verstappen and imho Verstappen would have won regardless the Red Bull is too fast on the straight.
Only this time it showed the improvements in Verstappen as it took him just a second to overtake once they hit the line. No excitement or close driving for a while this time!
Merc screwed up big time. When the safety car went through the pits, everyone who hadn't already pit changed to softs except Lewis and Checo who stayed on mediums. Despite this, Bono never told Lewis, all he knew was that George had pit and not that everyone had too which is why he was so surprised on the restart that only he hadn't pit. He should've pit immediately after Verstappen due to Merc being the first box in the pit lane and would've been close to Max but still able to fight. It baffles me that they didn't learn from Abu Dhabi.
They had a clear race plan, and that was go for the win. Pitting would have secured P2. But they agreed pre race that second places are worthless. They aren’t in any championship fight, they just want to win a race. So it was the right call to stay out. Pitting George wasn’t the best call for Lewis and not the best call if they are going for the win. But that’s on George, he specifically requested to put and overruled the team. Because he ain’t no Bottas.
@@youbetu18 And by result Merc should thanks Russell so they can still on P2. It's clear Toto and Ham would like to hold track position at all, as used, and when the race restart, 3 car overtake Ham, so there are just no way George would hold Max back with yellow till the race end.
Hamilton is driving the car not Merc - Hamilton should be telling the team what tyres he wants like Russell did. Everyone knows Hamilton simply cannot make a tyre call.
Remember all the years that Alonso used to get shit for being frustrated on the radio when things went wrong? And such, Fernando is labeled as "toxic" and Lewis is regarded as a "competitor". They are 2 of the best drivers of their era, but the narratives pushed by certain journalists, fans and team personnel have completely fucked up the fan perceptions of these two imo.
Oh shut the fuck up please. Last week everybody and their mother dickrode Alonso after his comments on Hamilton during the race claiming he's a god for saying all that shit. Even if george was to be buffer, max would've caught both with that soft tyre, lewis was not going to pull a 4 sec gap as max did, but for lewis there was a chance for the win... there is no perfect call sometimes.. if lewis was in george's position he would have taken those softs for better restart and moreover pitting for softs was george's call and not the team. One should understand mercedes was depserate to bag a win and did everything for that... guys should remember Russel isn't doing a bottas at mercedes, he was not going to sacrifice his opportunity to win for a guy who has 100+ wins and 7 titles already
The call was still wrong. Mercedes were so focused on Max, they failed to realise the threat was Ferrari. Max was too fast to beat, but their hubris made them irrational.
Even if George stayed out and created a buffer and had a chance to warm up the tyres, I don't think they'd hold on for much longer with a Verstappen on softs behind them. George knew that if he was to have a change of a podium he has to switch to softs because very one else was. I know merc was trying to take a risk but George backed out because he knew he couldn't compete if he were to stay out.
If it'd been like 5 laps left they may have had a chance banking on track position. There were 12 laps left, and it didn't even take 1 for Verstappen to get past Hamilton. Unless Russel is a monumentally better racer than Hamilton, even without Russel pitting and losing Hams buffer merc had no chance.
The strategy was that both ham and russell were to stay out and russell would slow verstappen so ham could take the win. but russell said, no thx, ill come in. ham and the team still havent come to terms with the fact that russell isnt bottas.
@@eddieingalls534 Hamilton had a bit less time to make the decision and was hoping that Merc would not pit Russel. Overall Merc made an error and if Russel had not pitted the standings most likely would have been Ver, Lec, Ham, Rus.
"Is everyone on soft tyres." "Just those around us." So in other words literally everyone that mattered who could beat Lewis was on tyres that would beat him. Also to be fair to the team, if you listen to George's radio it sounded like he was the one that made the call to switch. He was like "Put on the softs, I'm coming in, put on the softs." and not the team going "George come in, we're going to put on the softs." I don't think you can blame the team when a driver calls an audible and makes them switch. What you could argue is that if the driver can make a call to put on softs, even used ones, why didn't the team come to the same conclusion, but I don't think that if George didn't say I'm coming in, put on the softs, I don't think they would have, I think the team would have kept them both out. George made the right call by calling an audible and boxing for the used softs. I do kinda love his "To the mechanics, you guys were awesome. The rest of you go fuck yourselves." saltyness :P

Proud of George that he decided to stand up to Mercedes instead of playing the wingman role. In terms of skill level, George is much higher than Perez or Bottas so why should he be used as a buffer for Hamilton against Verstappen. George was smart, decided to take a decision for himself and got a nice P2.
Strategy was agreed, Lewis was ahead and a better decision couldve been made to benefit both drivers. If you hate Lewis for winning so much the last 8 years just say that
That’s why Hannah Schmitz is so well-rated. She takes a call based on performance, regardless of position. RB keeps winning because of using such windows to take the best out of each situation.
lmaoooo she had nothing to do with this, max had nothing to lose. they knew if lewis and max stayed out, lewis wouldve gotten drs off max. they were restarting off safety car.
It wouldn’t have mattered if George didn’t pit. Max would have had them both within 2 laps. Also didn’t help with Lewis’ shit restart after the safety car.
basic fact: George Russell is NOT going to be a Valteri Bottas for Lewis. George Russell is/will be Mercedes #1 driver. So Lewis is going to have to realize he's back in a Nico situation and not a situation where the team protects him like in previous years. Lewis had better get his claws out, his biggest competition isn't RB or Ferrari, it's Russell.
Another casual takes. When Lewis was testing the car at the beginning of the season. You called him washed. Then he stopped and had 6 podiums in a row, outpacing Russell in Quali and race pace. You can hear how Hamilton is surprised here. Lame.
Bono completely effed LH by telling him to stay out on the fast lane. Race was over with that radio call. All his superior work over the entire weekend was wasted by him following his team. And Russell was extremely smart knowing that LH had not pitted, got in for softs and stole LH's second place. Clever guy. LH should've done exactly what Russell did.
100% agree, Russell made a slick move there. I think Hamilton thought the team would make sure Russell remained as a buffer between him and Verstappen. I wonder why they didn't pit Hamilton for softs tbh.
So they have not learned from Abu Dhabi last year and Ferrari in the same situation this year, but keep the "track position" card at hand. Complete nonsense, as track position does not give you ammunition to fight a fast Red Bull on softs just behind you. It's all a big joke, this Toto and his strategy team. They just were not prepared for the safety car position.
It seems like they haven't caught up to the '22 cars in the strategy department yet. Track position on a tight track used to be very valuable when dirty air was a much bigger factor, as it was last year. But these cars can follow much closer without losing downforce and killing their tires, so it's all but useless now.

George just dropped behind Max by pitting, at that point there was no chance for him to win

"Is everyone on soft tyres."
"Just those around us."
So in other words literally everyone that mattered who could beat Lewis was on tyres that would beat him.

🤣😂 pretty sure Lewis didn't care for anyone not around him...
I laughed at that response too.
For real lol
It's all Masi's fault!
nah its the .3mm rear wings.
Amazing how level his voice is given the physical demands of racing. He was talking like he might have if he was walking in the park
The worry for Hamilton fans is he has gone off script. As you see at the end, he goes back to his usual 'thanks to the team' script (although still struggles as he drops team and says 'mechanics' )but before that he was angry that his team mate was doing well and blaming everyone else.
He is very much out of his comfort zone this season and I get the impression it is because he cannot comprehend how quickly he and Mercedes have gone from winning races by the end of lap 1, to having to fight for scraps.
He still feels entitled to win and wants to do so without putting in the hard work and grind. He wanted Russell and Verstappen to lose the race, rather than he win it.
@Tarik St Patrick kkkkkkkkkkkk unless you're new to this sport and don't know anything about it, this radio only shows how all racers react sometimes when things don't go their way, in his explosive moment he was even restrained, if you don't know you don't know, you know
@Tarik St Patrick Well my friend, if you think this particular radio shows anything about Lewis or any other driver character I don't think it does, if you're impressed by this radio I assume you haven't heard it Schumi, Alonso, Max even Lewis himself saying worse and if you haven't heard I assume you're new to Sport, but that's just my assumptions!
@Tarik St Patrick Ok my friend I also have F1TV having access to more information doesn't mean having the best understanding and I keep saying if you were impressed with this radio it's because you didn't hear worse because you are new to the sport, new fans tend to exaggerate everything that comes from pilots they don't support, if I'm immature? maybe you know better, peace and love to you.
This is a sport where the athlete(driver) gets to correct the manager, strategist. Gotta love that about F1. Obviosuly the drivers are the one that drive such ridiculously fast vehicles to exist on this planet so no surprise that they know better.
Mercedes strategies are really becoming questionable……they always have a situation where they tell lewis to stay out when everyone switches it’s crazy
Notice him saying its gonna be hard to keep 'that car' behind me instead of gonna be hard to keep Max behind me
That Track position greed took his championship last year. and landed him p4 in this race. even a school going kid with basic F1 knowledge wud know what a mistake it is to be on medium when Max and everyone else were on soft, with max kissing the rear of his mercedes after the pit stop exit..
Last year is not a strategic mistake.
They assusmed rules would be followed and fia didnt.
But this time Mercedes messed up their strategy.
@@noral342 yes agreed. but he still had a chance to go on softs, when he knew MAX was behind him on new softs. they worried abt loosing track position.. the lapped cars issue is another thing...overall mercedes is obsessed with track position...

“I think at the core of everything there has to be respect, when I think about and I hear the things that come out of drivers’ mouths I do think about young kids watching us.
“There are kids watching us and they’re looking at us for inspiration and for guidance. There has been a lot of things that have been said which is definitely not good for young kids that are watching.”
Lewis Hamilton, 2021
And he is Dressed like A Homeless or Ghetto Pimp
Wow, Such HYPOCRISY
sounds like what a soft british pussy says after getting his ass handed to him
He's a virtue signalling hypocrite
So he’s also not allowed to be human? It’s also good to show kids how to deal with setbacks but it’s all about how you bounce back. Being a good inspiration also means showing kids they don’t have to be robots and can speak their emotions.
You hater are such HYPOCRITES. Can't believe it.
When Alonso or Verstappen are whining on the radio, you call it " race anger, motivation". Tired of casuals nobodies like you
i remember when Lewis said before that ..his tram don’t make mistakes!
It was a bit like the Hungarian GP 2021 when Hamilton was the only one who didn’t change tyres before the start.
So…2021 WAS a legit win for Verstappen after all.
Merc just confirmed it with this deja vu.
In Holland we have this saying; a donkey never hits the same stone twice.
Toto will be renamed as Don Key from now on. 😂
LOL wut? OFC 2021 wasn't a legit win... That has F all to do with what happened here.
If it wasn't, Max would not have won the championship. :)
Of course is was legit, albeit with a bit of luck but deservedly champion.
If he wasn't hit in Silverstone and Hungary, he would have been the new champion well before that last race.
@@42earthling You could say the same to Lewis, for example his mistake in Azerbaijan which should not have happened and costed him a lot of points.. Point is, mistakes happen and luck is involved as well as skill, as well as a good car to win a championship.
Almost seems like Lewis was driving a red car today with the decision to leave him out
Leaving him out wasn’t the issue whatsoever. All they had to do was leave George out inbeween and then let Lewis build a gap, by the time Max got past George it would’ve been a couple laps and Lewis’ tyres would’ve been heated up and ready to fight.
Lewis is always so level on the radio. Very zen.
Lewis… YOU ARE THE BUFFER. George is number 1, you are number 2…
I love him being so pissed off and than hear the porpoising of his car.
Great call by George. Took charge of his race and made the right call! Guess LH is being a cry baby because he couldn’t use someone else so he could get a win and got beaten on pace/right strategy calls. Great intuition George
and u cry
That was a blunder in the end. They had track position and could have dictated the strategy better. They should have pitted both George and Lewis for softs
Wanted his team mate's race to be screwed just to boost his own chances of winning. What a great team mate.
Welcome to F1, everyone wants to win. And did George not do the same thing to Hamilton?
Last time i checked two people couldnt be first. This is a free for all sport deep down, dont let the fact that theres teams hide that
which guy is the priority, George or a 7 time world champion? There's no reason why George couldnt defend like checo did in abu dhabi on a track that is obviously harder to overtake. We're talking about a win here, 25 points, so even a 1-3 would be a better result than a 2-4.
@@sharvapotdar3257 Georges strategy was 'put me on soft tyres'. Hamiltons strategy was 'Use George for my own gain'. Bit of a difference there I think! 😂
Who came in first again?
This is not a "SIR " title worthy and it shows the true character
Can't blame Masi for this one!
no mikey no this is so not right 🤣🤣🤣

I believe they should give the driver total control of when to pit and what tyres to use, it would make for far more interesting race strategy's.And really mix things up. I also don't like how the engineers tell them what tyres other drivers are on.Give the drivers total control of the race strategy.
They need to focus on driving and can’t keep track of everything else at the same time
Classic Lewis not pitting and losing the race because of it.
It is a gamble
Remember Max pitted fm P1
Don’t think George not pitting would have done any good.

Good grovelling apology from Toto and and race engineer after the event. Lewis left the decision to the team then blamed them when it didn't work out for him. Would he have given the team credit for success had he won by them choosing lead position over new rubber or would he have simply basked in the glory of his achievement? George chose for himself and would have had nobody else to blame had it not worked for him, its called taking charge and responsibility. Easy to be clever after the the event or have the luxury of not bothering with snap decisions when your car is the class of the field and you don't have to push too hard to win.

It was the wrong call to pit George, but he was also screwed by not pitting?
Which is it Lewis?
Max and George requested softs, Lewis could have as well
What he is implying is that they either needed to keep both cars out or pit both for softs. He was happy to stay on mediums with George acting as defense for him but by himself he had no chance to defend against Verstappen on the softs.
Either they should have pitted both or neither. It was the wrong call if the team wanted to win the race.
George could have provided a buffer and hold up Max at the restart. Lewis would have an opportunity to get the tyres up to temp to possibly hold off Max.
Both are true if you pit George you need to pit Hamilton. If you keep George as a buffer then you don't pit.
Pitting only George was what screwed it.
@@ajwasthere Lewis was passed by 3 cars on the mediums. If George didn't pit, George would have been passed by 3 cars and Lewis passed by 2. Meaning Lewis would have had 3rd and George 4th.
George made the right call, and he was very cheeky demanding softs as Lewis was passing his pit box. He made sure that he wouldn't get doubke stacked.
I see a good future for George. 1st race in Lewis's benz in 2020 and he basically won. 1st season on benz and he is beating Lewis by 30 points now.
@@michaelp4122 The right call was to pit both cars you finish 2nd and 3rd. The second best was to pit neither car and try for the win with a buffer.
Pitting only George gives them less points and no change of winning. It was literally the worst option avaliable.
@@ajwasthere That's fair, benz messed up the strategy, but George caught on and salvaged his result.
George made that call last minute on purpose. He waited for it to be too late for Lewis. He is fighting Lewis in the standings after all. If George beats Lewis by the season end, he can argue that he is the #1 benz driver for 2023.
Right now, that 30 point lead, I think George will beat Lewis in 2022.
Having re-read this presentation, the pit answer to the reason for Russell pitting, “ I don’t know I’ll let you know”, is a poor response to a fairly direct question and less than the professional communications we have come to expect. Not acceptable, and I am sure added to Lewis’s rage!
Lol lewis knew bono ass was lying thts why he told bono it was a mistake
Sir Lewis is Mr. Mercedes, myself I've been a McLaren Mercedes fan since a boy. I love that Lewis is a legend that never raced for Ferrari. As it pains me 2 say I think this is that time. They have the drive they just need the driver. I think Lewis deserves another 2 titles b4 he leaves this sport. Especially after what he didn't do last year. In what he didnt do u could see the Mandela influences, one of his idols ofcoz. When u'all realize what kinda man Lewis is and what his done and sacrificed, it will b too late as it too often is.
lewis immediately new they threw it when he asked why they pitted george
Russel saved Mercedes a podium. if George didn't call for soft, he too would be a sitting duck to everyone with softs.
0:40 he knew then and there that he has lost the podium
Question is Lewis was quick in whole weekend
But team decided not to pit him rather then pit Russell for soft.
