    If we set the Adapter 1 to Bridged Adapter, no WAN IP is assigned to the pfSense VM. The VM cannot ping the host machine either. When trying to ping the host, it responds with ‘No route to host’. Why is it happening so?

  • @josuefitmtz

    So everything seems fine, and my Kali machine is connected to the pfsense, but my Kali machine itself isn't connected to the internet. Why? I cant' browse, I can't get-apt update, none of that

    • @RedBlueLabs
      @RedBlueLabs  Год назад +1

      this could be something else, I have had situations where Kali doesn't update, and the fix was on how I installed it.
      before you go to far troubleshooting the network. Do you have a different vm that you could put on that network? if you do, put it on that LAN fire it up and see if you get internet. if you do, that is good it means you are having a Kali only problem.
      if it is a Kali problem, the fix I have done is create a brand new kali but during the creation process ensure that I have internet, you want to make sure that you are connected to the rolling-releases correctly.
      These are a couple things to try. let me know if it doesn't and we can keep troubleshooting :)

    How would you go about sharing the lan network with VMs and physical hardware? My system has two physical Ethernet ports

    • @RedBlueLabs
      @RedBlueLabs  2 месяца назад

      This is a very good question. Without knowing more, it would depend how you are going to run PFSense. for me I am working on putting pfsense on a physical machine, where the only OS for the desktop is PFSense, this means though that I would have to use two physical adapters to actually use them as networks. I need to do a bit of digging to see if what you are wanting is possible. PFSense is a great option for a free router, that is why I am going to be making a dedicated desktop that is only PFSense. Sorry I couldn't be more help, thanks for watching the video :)

    Hi Andrew - thank you very much for this really clear and helpful tutorial. Quick question if I may. I'd like to setup a 2nd interface on the pfSense so I can do some firewall rule testing in a virtual environment e.g. between a trusted and a guest network. Is there any chance you could explain how that's done? Thanks in advance. Alex (UK).

    • @RedBlueLabs
      @RedBlueLabs  5 месяцев назад

      hey great question. I actually have a few FW rules videos on on my channel that could help with that. PFSense is perfect for practicing FW rules because it is a safe environment. A video you may want to consider, only because it deals with FW rules specifically is the video where you connect to a domain computer from a different network. We have to use FW rules in order to make this happen Thanks for watching :)

In my case I connected in my lan pfsense and metasploitable

    • @RedBlueLabs
      @RedBlueLabs  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, if you have two LANs and they are set to internal then if you put a machine in each LAN they will be totally isolated from each other and only reachable when firewall rules permit it. Thanks for watching:)

    Hello! Thanks for this awesome tutorial it worked for me. Just want to ask will this allow me to access the webConfigurator of PfSense? I tried accessing the IP to my browsers but it won't let me access it only says "the site can't be reached". Not sure what I'm doing I'm still a student by the way. learning things out.

    • @RedBlueLabs
      @RedBlueLabs  Год назад +1

      Thx for watching, when you go through the setup stages in the pfsense it should ask if you want to set up webconfigurator. Typically this is set up on the LAN side.
      Once LAN is all up connect a machine to that network and connect to pfsense gui through the gateway address. In here there is a wizard that you will need to step through.

      Hi, no you don't. It all depends on what you are wanting to do with the virtual machine. You could have VM with no NIC if you wanted. For pfsense, it's beneficial to have access to the internet for updating and using the FW features

    • @RedBlueLabs
      @RedBlueLabs  Год назад

      thanks for your question. Just to clarify are you using the WAN interface with NAT? Or are you pointing the WAN interface to another machine which will then be doing the routing for you? Depending on which machine is trying to reach an inside network you may want to think about port forwarding as a solution

      Hey, thanks for watching! the thing to check is in the machine settings. Make sure that the Hard drive is set as the first bootable media and not the optical drive. If you leave the optical drive as the first one every time you boot it will check the iso file first which then restarts the installation process. Let me know if this helps!!

    Hi, so does running pfsense in VirtualBox means it's only available within the VM ? Can the host machine reach pfsense web config page? In asking cos I need to create a captive portal on my home wifi.

    • @RedBlueLabs
      @RedBlueLabs  Год назад +1

      Thanks for your comment. It really depends how you want to accomplish it. A way that I have heard a lot of people do is actually installing pfsense as the primary OS on a computer. Have a couple NICs and have traffic route through this. The benefit of this is that you will have the horse power of a desktop, as opposed to a vm which is reliant on whatever the host machine has. I'm thinking of doing this myself, just haven' found the time to get to it.

    • @RedBlueLabs
      @RedBlueLabs  Год назад +1

      Awesome question. It depends how things are configured. The desktop needs to connect to the machine hosting pfsense vm, the host machine would need at least 2 network interfaces so that traffic can be routed through it. I would think a network switch connecting to a interface on host machine and then have your standalone desktop will connect to that switch. If you have an old computer you could also turn the entire machine into a router which is pretty cool too. I hope this helps :) thanks for watching!

      Have you unzipped the pfsense download before attaching to the VM?
      Are you running on a VM or installing on the server itself?
      Try downloading the pfsense iso again to make sure your copy is not corrupt somehow.
