    I’m gonna throw out a oddball comment compared to what will mostly be talked about, but I really loved the development of the president’s wife. She never asked or even envisioned having to take care of some clueless idol’s children, and those kids had to threaten/bribe her to take care of them. But over the years she developed a relationship with Ai, Ruby, and Aqua, that by the time of AI’s untimely murder she grew attached, and out of her own volition with no strings attached she chose to become their adoptive mother. It was a brief respite in a time of total pain, and really amazing that she had gone from willing to sell Ai and the children out to wanting to care for them when they had nothing else left.

    Some language things I found interesting: Ai's name is spelled in katakana, implying it should be read phonetically as a foreign word. It is both the first two letters of how Japanese spell the word "Idol", but also could mean 'eye'. Her full name could be read as Hoshi no Ai, or 'Star-eyed'. There is also another connotation, in that "Ai" is the Japanese word for "love", but being spelled in katakana it would imply the word sounds like "love" without meaning it, which has parallels to Ai's feelings on the matter.

      all the times the internet is mentioned in this anime, is horrifiingly realistic. the most recent RL example I remember, is propably the submarine that got lost while diving to the titanic. as soon as the crowd realized, that the persons inside where rich, everyone lost their mind and kept saying stuff like "their fault for doing this" "they deserve it" and so on. as if when you get famous/successfull, you are no longer a human being and deserve every misfortune, that hits you. especialy so if it costs your life in the most horrifiing way imaginable.
      the same here in the anime "her fault for getting stabbed. shouldn't got a bf as an idol" it is the same stupid reasoning.

    This anime actually portrayed the dark reality of Idol-Fan relationship. Even in real world, fans don't hesitate to talk ill about their idol without knowing any reality. Internet is a scary place where people have excessive freedom of speech, especially in the case of comment section. People just hurt/insult eachother with their fake accounts, they just vent their insecurities and anxieties by insulting anyone, no matter if it's their idol. Internet is place where people use freedom of speech as an excuse to hurt eachother.

The president was legally AI’s guardian and it seems to have been genuine by the end. He was in effect the twin’s grandfather. He didn’t have to legally adopt them. He was gonna share that alcohol with Ai and you can see he was so depressed he didn’t even attend her funeral.

    Based on just this first episode what I really like so far is that for as dark and brutal as this anime's depiction of the entertainment/idol industry is, it doesn't seem to just be interested in offering a moralizing message that one should stay away either as a creator or as a fan. Ai is a self-proclaimed liar but she also isn't cynical, she doesn't simply see her audience as easily-duped losers and she has hopes for how her work might change the way she thinks about and expresses herself. And though we have the image of the murderous "parasocial" fan, it's also hard to overlook that the series fundamentally involves transforming the idol/fan relationship into a familial parent/child one - if we're being honest, it doesn't get more parasocial than that. That seems to be the foundation this first episode has built up - that as much as this space is structured by lies there are also genuine feelings that run through those lies in all directions, and there are both beautiful and horrifying things that can result from that. That's the hallmark of a great story to me though - it evokes all of this complexity without treating it like it has easy answers, and for that reason I'm so excited to see where this goes next.

    • @IZEASGT
      @IZEASGT Год назад +5

      Bingo. Every time this series makes you wonder "Why would anyone want to be part of this world?", it immediately follows it up with something that makes you go "Oh. That's why." The entertainment industry provokes powerful emotions by its nature, like the joy Ai brought to Sarina. If it didn't, it wouldn't be able to chew up throngs of eager young people and spit them out; it couldn't even exist. And yes, it's absolutely important that Ai _believes_ in lies and their power, enthusiastically, and has real yearnings deep inside that she hopes to fulfill with them.

    I kinda knew that this show would be dark but seing Ai dying holding her son in her arms and telling "I love you" with her last breath was the most-heartbreaking scene I have witnessed since some years.
    And yes, the depiction of (Japanese) showbiz and the fandom is not farfetched. There have been some cases where some idols committed suicide after being cyberbullied by fans.
    The last case I know about was Amane Shindou of BanG Dream! series was targeted at by parts of the franchise's fandom because her fictional band was implemented before another group which was established before Amanesu's group was introduced.
    Gladly, she did not harmed herself, but is crazy what people are willing to do to others.

    The commentary on parasocial relationships is SO relevant today. People have an innate need for social relationships (Maslow's hierarchy of needs) but when their only social relationships are parasocial, that is a recipe for disaster imo. I don't think parasocial relationships are inherently bad but people need healthy relationships with tangible people so they don't go crazy like that stalker guy.
    I guess it's not too surprising that something written by Akasaka would tackle a relatively new and unexplored topic (Kaguya-Sama did cover revenge p*** after all) but I'm glad he's tackling it because I don't think we fully understand the impact of parasocial relationships on human psychology yet.

    You held up emotionally a lot better than I did… I hadn’t wept this much watching an anime since certain episodes of Violet Evergarden. ^_^;;
    This story is certainly a commentary on the entertainment industry in Japan. Idols must remain “pure” for their fans, and even having a relationship would hurt their careers as they will lose their fans. In addition, some fans go overboard and some become scary stalkers. Former AKB48 member Minami Minegishi famously made an apologetic video shaving her head for being exposed to have dated another singer, other AKB48 members were stabbed during a handshake event (though it was not really a fan, but just a psycho who wanted to kill someone and the handshaking event was a convenient place), another AKB48 member was raped in her apartment by her fans, and a singer-songwriter was stabbed and killed by one of her stalker fans.

    Honestly, I have been watching anime since 2020 and there were quite a few instances where I had felt void in my heart while watching them [Especially after watching I Want To Eat Your Pancreas (2018), Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms (2018), Violet Evergarden (2018-2020) etc.]. But, this episode would be the first time when I felt the same voidness into my heart, as in the first episode on any series! Who would've thought that an episode which started so beautifully turned out to be so tragic! Furthermore, I also have a suspicion about the name Tanujirou, which appeared into the tweets in this episode, of whether it is connected to Ai's murder.

One volume of the manga is available in english, the second volume comes out in may, and there are a total of 10 or 11 volumes so far

    A few days ago I had just watched a true story/documentary video of something that was similar to what happened in Oshi No Ko.
    It was a story of the psychologically and emotionally unstable die hard fan, a male person. When he found out that the girl he idolized started dating someone he interpreted it as if the idol belonged to him and has betrayed him. He tried to kill the pop idol by making a "bomb book" and deliver it to the pop idol's address as a gift. Basically a book that when you open it, a bomb inside explodes. The authorities managed to stop the package from reaching the idol, and the fan had taken his own life.
    It was the story of the "Bjork Stalker" named Ricardo Lopez. And as an anime only when I finished watching Oshi No Ko episode 1, I thought that the author might have written Oshi No Ko slightly in reference to the Bjork Stalker story.

    The writing level is top tier and when I found out he did Kaguya as well. I thought to myself, "This dude is another level when it comes to writing, storytelling, and making a very intriguing premise to draw viewers." The youtuber Chibi Reviews said it best, Aqua feels like a modern day/Gen Z "Light Yagami"... And when I started the Kaguya series awhile back, I thought the characters had Death Note intelligence but put in a RomCom setting.

    21:57 - while agree children should be free and grow properly... she's in the entertainment business and she's actually very mature and knowing that competition and being the best and recognition will lead to more opportunities, so her response felt right for an up and coming child actor who has some recognition... it does break my heart knowing that children like her exist, bc of the mental anguish, stress, and constantly being judged can lead to mental health issues in the future... she going through struggles that are meant for older individuals, I mean it still breaks my heart that teens go through this let alone little kids.
