    As much as Jaws gets all the credit for practical effects i think Deep Blue Sea is an extremely underrated shark film and their animatronic sharks are miles better than the Bruce animatronic from Jaws (yes im aware of the difference in time between when the two animatronics were made)

    The shark design in this movie is truly unique and excellent. The design is sleek, sharp and acrobatic, the movement is also very unusual, they strike super swiftly and fast. They created unique personalities for these creatures, they look calculating, sinister and ferocious, as they are products of genetic advancements therefore they have the speed and the smarts, and probably enjoy toying with their preys, taunting them - which adds to a truly psychopathic quality to the creature. This really makes the sharks stand out from other movie sharks and monsters.

    Yeah, if I was an actor and I’d have a scene with a shark, I’d have to see them build the shark from scratch to be 1 trillion percent sure that I’m not getting into a real shark. And even after I’d witness them build the shark, I’d probably have trouble lmao

    I came to this video after Netflix added deep blue sea. I had to watch behind the scenes because although the CGI is questionable by today’s standards (fab back then) I could not figure out how they did the majority of the scenes because it looked so real. I’m so impressed it was done with animatronics. I didn’t think they had the ability to create things that lifelike back in 1999.

    @mansondelacy Год назад +22

    For all that commendable detail and work put into the physical effects and the animatronics, the Mako sharks of this movie have never been documented as being that big.
    I think the studio just wanted to go with one of the scarier looking sharks that wasn’t a great white, picked out the Mako, and just changed the color of the skin to either match a tiger shark, or a great white. Makos in terms of size and color looking nothing like they do in the movie. Still, I always saw the animatronics of this movie as something that made something like fabricating the look of a shark, and make it look like it was truly alive. Truly great work.

    I'm glad this film used practical Sharks like Bruce in Jaws, & cgi for effects that they can't do practically the sharks look real I didn't know that the tiger shark was animatronic wow they did a great job creating these sharks to swim, move breathe through there gills it's amazing Work even though there machines actors and actresses would be scared of them they would have to put there trust into the people operating the sharks & the shark itself even though it looks real it could still kill someone 👍👍to all who brought this film to life, & the animatronic shark creator who made them Great work Everyone.

    As well as JAWS might work as a fantasy horror, it's pretty much garbage as a shark horror, due to the badly modeled shark animatronics that look nothing like real sharks, let alone Great Whites. I actually think JAWS would have worked much better with a completely alien fantasy creature than throwing people out of immersion by having unrealistically looking animal puppets. (I personally also find it painfully boring in many scenes)
    Deep Blue Sea did it WAY better with very subtle difference between their animatronics and real sharks. JAWS didn't even get the color right, let alone the teeth, the head shape etc.
    Also the story of DBS is far more believable. No "mindless monster by nature" such as in JAWS but monsters because people genetically modified them. Also the "shark science" behind DBS with the "sharks age different, are far more resilient" and the regeneration of neurons is actually not that far fetched. As a biologist I deeply appreciate this movie's realistic take.
    They also did the CGI movements of the sharks way better back in 1999, even better than newer shark movies such as "the Meg" or "The Shallows". The animators did a fantastic job.
    It's not the movement of the shark itself, it's portraying realistic resistance of water and currents (especially with the tail fluke) animators struggle with to this day when animating swimming sharks.
    If they would update just a couple of scenes with badly aged CGI (some attack scenes and the infamous Samuel L. Jackson being eaten scene) this movie would still hold up to modern standards easily.

    its a shame that as brilliant as the sharks looked, they simply took the Mako and recoloured it to make the Tiger. Anyone with a keen interest in sharks knows they have flatish wide heads, broad serrated teeth, and an asymmetrical tail. Very lazy that they didn't respect the viewers intelligence in that respect. But the movie is in the top 5 shark movies ever
