How I love the old BMX bikes. You knew what a Mongoose Supergoose or Pro Class was,you knew what a GT was,you knew what a Redline,Diamond Back Turbo,Huffy Racing,Murray,Raleigh or any other bike from that era was.Now BMX bikes look the same. Its only SE that STILL keep that originality with their Quadangles,PK Rippers, and Floval Flyers. The 80s...the best era for BMX😀

Yep Same here. All we had was Bmx magazines back then, so it was very rare to ever see these guys actually ride.

Yes this is great to see these legends..however because video was scarce back then theres not many videos of these great riders. As mentioned BMX Plus & Action Mags were the only resources.

I was there. I raced. Didn't trophy, though. Funny seeing this. Reminded me how bad the track was. Sadly, this is the race that killed ABA here in Las Vegas.

Look how hard they had to dig to get speed. I said this in another video that the tracks of the ‘80’s weren’t built with the smoothness and speed of today’s race tracks. Back then you had to dig hard on those dirt tracks and needed superior quad strength. Today’s racers most certainly have major talent and the tracks today require an incredible amount of skill, but I stand that leg strength was even more of factor back in the “Stu Thompson days.”

This brings back memories. Looking back at it compared today it looks a bit pedestrian, partly because today's tracks are longer and wider but these were the best in the world back then.

😡 At the comments.. SMH Weak track? This was inside the Tropicana Hotel in 1982! Who cares if the tracks today sanctioned by USABMX has a degree of difficulty ... but can't get 8 or more Pros to compete. The top riders shown here Greg Hill and Stu Thomsen were easily making over 100k a year back then .. Pros and the top amateurs drove $$$$ towards the manufacturers. For all the technology and advancement in today's BMX racing where are the so called factory teams outside of Haro?? All the jerseys- unforms are so cookie cutter and media coverage.? The best thing i've seen in the last 20yrs IMO is that BMX racing is now part of the Olympics thanks to some of these pioneers racing in this short clip!

I followed MX more than BMX back in the 80's. Was the Championship only one Race, or like MX with 11-12 races in the Outdoor Nationals, or 20 Races like MXGP? One Race doesn't feel like an accomplishment as far as a Championship Title goes.

Big Daddy....dude, it was the tennis pavilion at the Tropicana...the place was small, not all tracks were like this. Check out Chandler in the early 80’s, the first straight was warp speed fast, or Corona, a downhill track where speeds of 35mph was not uncommon, far faster than even today, I know, because I am still racing todays BMX, pump track BMX to me is not near as fun or rewarding as pedaling your guts out for a win....BMX in these days was not slow contrary to the belief of you new skoolers...I’m a Black Mountain local, where the Winternationals are held every year...I got second this year in 51&Over Inter, and I will be going to the Vegas Nationals in 2 weeks plus the Race of Champions/Grands in Tulsa in November, so I know what’s up, and I raced as a 17ex at this race in the video...you may not think this race was kool, but it was despite the track not being World Championships worthy..but still killer fun...and just because a track is made difficult these days doesn’t make it better, concrete hard, glass smooth race surface over rollers in 90psi tires , it gets people hurt and some don’t come back because of it. BMX needs to retain the riders it has. BMX has to compete with Xbox and the damned internet....

@@woodystorey amen brother. I raced on and off in the 80s, 90s, 00, up to 2009. I quit racing BMX and started racing mx and downhill mtb because BMX lost its edge imo. I always think of the best times I had in the early years. A sanction needs to form where the races are downhill like the tracks from then. Knobby tires, no paved turns or soil tec'd straights, no clippeless pedals, actual jumps, etc. Make BMX great again.

This track is definitely not representative of the tracks we had back then. Also, from what I remember, there was a LOT of pushing and shoving going on in the berms/corners. Lots of elbows being thrown, too.
