- My Banyan Ficus has been in a "root maker" pot for over a year, today I'm looking at the results!
I then root prune and repot the tree into a new shallow pot.

This will be an extremely busy summer for you!
Lots of content! Lol
Just missed the premier. Watching now. Sometimes with different root systems it works and sometimes it doesn't. Root pruning after all does the best.
Nigel, if you're stuck with using tap water like myself. I use a RV waterfilter. It's pretty effective to prevent water spots and fairly inexpensive compared to "garden specific" filters.
Amen! I have them on my hoses, and my mom's hoses.
Helps with the chlorine too.
thanks for the idea!
If you turn it upside down and tap the top of the pot on something solid it will pop right out. love your trees and the care you take with them. Inspiring
I like the idea of Bonsai gardening meets car renovation channel. Two of my favourite past-times 😍
Some great content as always! Im still trying to get in the bonsai scene, havent figured what to start?
That's how I felt...But I had noticed the new trend being to bonsai everything!
So that's what I'm doing, whatever seeds I can find online, around my neighborhood, I recently got maple and pine seeds from The Grand Ole Opry. Lol
There's also cheap trees from garden stores.
And CUTTINGS! When I see a tree I like, I find a way to get a cutting, and try to grow it.
I don't worry about styling or fancy pots, until I'm sure I can keep it alive.

Nigel take a look at Plantsurge magnetic water softener it clips on your hose pipe or water but tap And the theory is it magnetises the water, softens it and the water is apparently charged like thunderstorm rain. Lots of videos on RUclips showing results and feedback. Would be a solution to using straight tap water. I’m using one here in the UK on all my garden everything seems lush so far,to be fair I’ve had mine a couple of months so will see how it goes this summer Plantsurge by Ecocamel
I am always amazed, how many wonderful projects you have going Nigle 😀. The whole lot of love and care ,moving the plants in and out of your home. My goodness 😳 ❤❤❤❤
Thanks Tanya, it's good to see you again!!!
I have doubts about any special and more technical pots too. Meh! A common pot will be fine for starting a new plant.
Nice work on the pruning of those thick roots. Repotting will bring it back with some great root growth.
You know, I never noticed til the last video how much Nigel likes red cars. Doh!
Lol, it's totally by luck!!
@@TheBonsaiZone LOL I thought it was by choice!
Busy busy! The tiered shelves are gonna look so cool! Same here with dry weather too maybe a thunderstorm on Saturday tho :)
Nice to get all the trees outside!!
I have achieved good fine roots using a plastic colander. Any fine mesh container can be used.
I need to get a ficus in my life...
Didn't you get 2 IBCs or am I mistaken? Anyway, now that spring is here, the bonsai zone goes full throttle!
I did get two, the one is in the bonsai area just being used as a bench, I'm hoping to hook it up to the greenhouse roof!
@@TheBonsaiZone Sounds like a good plan!

Hi Nigel love your updates. I haven't seen any updates on your ming, Do you still have it? Tku dj
Yes, it is doing well, it's planted in the marble pot now!
@@TheBonsaiZone
Tks. I'm glad yours is doing good. I saw the video where you cut back the roots a lot. So I was wondering if it made it tks for answering. Take care dj
Hi, Nigel, whatever happened to those large mall ficuses? Love the banyans, truck and Porsche!
I gave all the mall Ficus away, they are all doing well and I'll update them when I see the trees next! Thanks!
👍👌👌
Love your Ficus rumphii, aka, “a banyan fig species” with an edible fruit! Who knew? Nice.
Ahh, the ol spring bonsai shuffle, the summer is here and it's going to be a glorious year of results! Can't wait to see the benches in the plant room! Thanks for continuing to create content during this busy time!
Very nice! I always learn so much from you!
Thanks for sharing and think you are perfectly right on root maker pots but I am convinced it can make well for certain plants/trees that are a bit slow on root growth in the beginning.
Then again mesh baskets etc do perhaps better.
Interesting work on that young banyan tree. Hope we'll see it again in a month.
Thanks, Nigel, for the update. Was eagerly waiting for it. 😊
Thanks!!
What ever happened to the ficus you were growing on a wooden sleb to induce ribbon roots? Do you still have that tree?
It slowly got weaker and eventually died over the winter. I may try it again in a shallow pot!
